Elliot Hospital, Time of Reading 107 Audubon Rd., 1:30 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. Boston, Mass.

1. GC: You will have before you the body of [164], who is in the Elliot Hospital, 107 Audubon Road, Boston, Mass., and the conditions surrounding same. You will give the condition of this body at the present time, with suggestions for the further improvement of same.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body and those conditions surrounding same, here. The body and the physical conditions we have had before.

3. Now we find in the general that conditions are improved from that as when we had same here before. While there is much yet to be gained by the body, to have the full, proper, normal use OF the physical organism of the body, this condition may be builded properly in the system; for the body is at that stage, that cycle in its development, when the changes are taking place, and with the proper administering of conditions to add to the physical development, that as has been wrought by destructive elements in the body may be overcome - for the immunity even as has been created in system has, in a manner, been so eliminated as to be negligible in the proper rebuilding or adding to the system in the physical manner as to deter or to prevent the normal building in the body. While this will require time, patience and persistence; yet this may be accomplished.

4. Those conditions as surround the body at present are better, and the needs of the body are better understood than that as we had here before. Those elements as have been outlined for the recuperation are good. Those conditions, as we find, may be overdone in some directions; and while there is necessity for the correct balance to be kept, THIS should be the main activity of those things administered: Keeping the normal balance for the recuperating of the system; considering position of organs, effect of taut muscular forces on weakened condition, position of the torso and frame of the body; that added to the system for the

replenishing of tissue, muscle, bone and sinew. Well, will it be found, to add flesh food from without. Not in added medicinal properties, save as to keep the proper diet that will build and add the normal elements for a developing system, but that which - added without - may act upon the muscle, tissue, the sinew and the nerve and blood, without passing through that of nominal assimilation, or outward applications.

5. In the massage or masseur as given, at times - at least once each week - we would add Balsam of Sulphur. At least once each week (and make them on opposite days) use and apply equal parts of olive oil and tincture of myrrh and sassafras oil. Heat the olive oil and add the other properties. This massaged (this last) in abdomen and chest. The Sulphur massaged in and along the whole length of the spine, especially the sacral and lower lumbar region, see? Ready for questions.

6. (Q) What faith can we have in Dr. Frank Ober's diagnosis? (A) This, as has been seen, is very good - and near in accord with existent conditions. WELL, that portion which applies from this diagnosis to the physical attributes of the body, and especially the rest and position and manner of keeping in position physically, and that of others in the mental and internal operation.

7. (Q) In Dr. Brewster's? (A) Rather those that coincide with others, than that wholly given by Brewster; for these apply not so much to the tissue building as to the muscular contraction in weakened tissue.

8. (Q) In Miss Wright's? (A) Miss Wright's ABILITIES to apply that GIVEN, better than that of the diagnosis, or of conditions to be met according to that as is shown or is being administered by the body, or through its efforts.

9. (Q) In the treatments being given by Miss Evans? (A) These, were added with that as given, better than without.

10. (Q) What changes are advised in surroundings? (A) None for at least six to eight weeks.

11. (Q) In diet? (A) That will be a study as conditions develop; for, as given, this must of necessity add that to the system to be assimilated in the proper way and manner for tissue, muscle and sinew and bone building; for ONE may be assisted to the detriment of another - in massage, in diet, and in medicine. Little or no internal medicine, save in the diet.

12. (Q) In treatments?

164-3 Page 3

(A) Those as administered, with the addition of that given.

13. (Q) In exercises? (A) These - care must be taken with the almost DAILY development. Not too strenous, for this may be overdone. Not too lax, for this may be the means of undoing that being accomplished. So, then, that of the condition that keeps the balance in the system's building; for we find much of this condition is as existent in the body: As has been given, the body is at the stage when there is the change, or the cycle of development. There is that existent in the system which is as of the normal body being builded, added to from time to time by that being administered - through the foods and application to the body for the resuscitation of tissue, muscular forces, nerve supplies and ganglions that have been weakened by being as it were - burned or used up. Then, resuscitation is necessary. ONLY resuscitation, with proper balance. Then, as a body grows in the stage from nominal development - infant - in its activities, some are necessary, many are necessary, that seemingly are useless; yet all are needed in that use of the body in the various centers, that muscle and tissue may be balanced in this resuscitation.

14. (Q) In mental self help? (A) The surroundings are very good as regarding this phase of the body's development. Then, only that which keeps the bright, cheery side of the body's own faculties alert, will add in this direction.

15. (Q) When should he leave Boston? (A) This would depend upon developments. Not until six to eight weeks from present.

16. (Q) When will he be able to go to Chicago? (A) Possibly not just after leaving here - there may be other places better. Let's reach these as conditions develop, rather than so far ahead at present.

17. (Q) Are there any specific recommendations regarding braces? (A) Not as yet, save as those that are to be used to keep those displacements already occurred, in their proper alignment and position while there is being created the new muscular reaction and tissue for the body.

18. (Q) Give the degree of completeness of his recovery, and when. (A) As has been GIVEN, this may be made wholly complete under the EXISTENT circumstances, would the conditions be kept near normal in their ratio of development one to another. In such conditions, so often is one portion overlooked to the detriment OF that in its relation to another - understand? see? As to how soon, this will

164-3 Page 4

depend upon the response to that administered. Six to eight months should see near wholly recovered for the body. Nine months at the least, or the greatest.

19. (Q) Does Martinsville still seem a good place for him? (A) After some developments; not at present, no. This will be better later on than at present. Let's go slow - let's use that in hand, and the developments may bring about those conditions where varied places, or others, may even offer better than Martinsville, Indiana. The sea the sand - the mud of other places may be better.

20. That is all the questions.

21. Much may be said respecting this condition as exists with this body, and in its present stage as related to the effects of this peculiar ailment [poliomyelitis] to the physical conditions of the human family, and the applications of those conditions coordinated between those surrounding the body at present and that as has been suggested as added TO those - would make history for some!

22. We are through for the present.
