Time of Reading 11:15 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. ..., Ill. (Body and enquiring mind - questions regarding financial progress, business relations and associations)

1. EC: Yes, we have the enquiring mind, [165], and those conditions and associations as surround the body. These we have had before. There have been some changes in the business and physical relations of the body with individuals, businesses, business groups. Some have proven the more satisfactory, some have brought more of uncertainty, and some have proven to be unsatisfactory.

2. In the consideration of the business, as may be given as respecting business associations and relations, these must be considered in a consistent and SYSTEMATIC way and manner, for all such relations must be of a practical growth and nature to be worth while. True, conditions arise when advantage may be taken OF conditions, but advantage taken of individuals may only bring consternation and - Such jars! - troubles. Later on these become troublesome conditions. Ready for questions.

3. (Q) Which of the [[165] & [5616] Co.] Products should be pushed hardest - lacquer, varnish, enamel, filler, sealer or primers? (A) The lacquers the principal one for stress to be put on, for the greater developments, at THIS portion of the development. These, in the next three and a half years, present the way, the portion that should be stressed. Not that others are to be neglected, for there are some SPECIALTIES in which the company, the association, has made some real progress in, but THESE on the larger or the greater scale.

4. (Q) Which industries should be worked hardest? (A) These, we will find, will alter, and the situation should be kept sufficiently in hand to make for the business and business relations the abilities to handle that as is presented, especially in that relation do we find the New York office, or the New York proposition, especially in the color matter. These have proven thus far rather of the

liability than the asset. Will these be turned rather to that of the decorative end, as related to apartment buildings, offices and such, these may be made MUCH more satisfactory. As to the regular channels of oils, varnishes, these present, in a different PORTION of the territory, a different example. See?

5. (Q) Which parts of the country? (A) These also present an unusual condition, in the view of the fact that in different portions of the country there is the developing of different conditions and different manners of the finish. Those, of course, where the greater amount of lacquer for THAT development and those of the matter color for that; meaning centers where such may be used.

6. (Q) How should we approach the Victor Company of Camden, N.J.? (A) Through those of the finishing department, as has to do with the distributing heads, or through Simons. [Simmons - See 165-14, Par. 8-A saying Simmons, not Simons.]

7. (Q) Who can help us with the Victor Company? (A) Help self!

8. (Q) What products should our Technical Department endeavor to develop? (A) These are too far in advance for the varied conditions as are presenting themselves. Rather should this approach be made from what will be necessary to meet the needs of individual conditions as they present themselves in the various fields. THEN this may be made more specific. To give it as a generalization of these, would be "shooting rather a large gun."

9. (Q) What poor credit risks are we carrying? (A) Most of these are confined to one portion of the territory - that, namely, of the northwest and the central portions. These are the greater. Central States, see?

10. (Q) How can we develop business in Toledo, Ohio? (A) We don't find much here. Not much inning, when so much of these from Detroit and the eastern field is represented so. These may be made in the smaller concerns and worked to that field of the special developments as may be made for FINISHED products; especially where the better grades of the lacquers are used.

11. (Q) How much business can we get in Toledo, Ohio? (A) Depends upon how much work is done! This, necessarily, would begin from comparatively small beginnings from that that may be accomplished in the accomplishing of, as it were, "getting in".

12. (Q) What stock on open market would be a quick profitable purchase? (A) Norfolk & Western, or Macy, or Sears-Roebuck.

165-6 Page 3

13. (Q) For how long should they be held? (A) It was asked for "quick"!

14. (Q) What is the future of Radio Keith Orpheum Stock? (A) When the next combine is made as relating to this, will be well. The combine is only tentative in action at present, but in October or early portion of next year these will be a very speculative stock.

15. (Q) What future developments will there be in Health Lamps? (A) These are just beginning. This will be a very good field for developments for ANYONE entering such field - but get away from the present manner in most of the ways in which they are presented. These should, as HEALTH Lamps, be HEALTH Lamps, and not as TREATMENT Lamps: and HEALTH Lamps must necessarily mean a diffusing of the health giving properties or forces as may be made over a greater space, or to meet a greater NEED in such relations; that is a ROOM flooded, or a room prepared for such, rather than concentrating in the form of TREATMENT Lamps.

16. (Q) Can we successfully design and manufacture these? (A) Who couldn't!

17. (Q) How should we approach the Marmon Co. of Indianapolis? (A) Kirshbaum would be the better approach.

18. (Q) Is that Bernard Kirshbaum? (A) B. W.

19. (Q) On what date will we get orders from them? (A) What dates will it be sought? Then add about fifteen days to same!

20. (Q) Is Edward Slowey the man to interview them? (A) [165] the better. Slowey very good. Go through the Chicago office - they're not far apart! Just two and a half streets over, you see.

21. (Q) Can you give specific credit risks that we are carrying? (A) We would rather not credit anyone here, on this especially.

22. (Q) Can [165] & [5616] Co. prosper on it's present capital? (A) This condition we have approached here before, and there has been rather the definite outline and policy as concerning this. We do not find changes. These have been proven rather satisfactory from the standpoint of that given. While these have not been conducted wholly along the lines as were outlined, were they the faults of the suggestions given? or of the manner of conducting? Study THAT! THAT'S a good one!

23. (Q) Why do we fail to get Carolina Wood Products business? (A) This has ALSO been gone into rather thoroughly. Would the development of that in the manner given, that will prevent the turning or the white frost or the finish

showing, be proven to these in the manner shown or given, by the use of the alcohol in the form and manner given for this, we have little trouble in furnishing the lacquer and varnishes for this concern. There was given who and how these might be thoroughly demonstrated. It's worth trying!
