1. GC: You will have before you the body and enquiring mind of [257], of the Irving Furniture Factories, 206 Lexington Ave., N.Y. City, and his association with the Carolina Wood Products Co. at Asheville, N.C., in the section known as Woodfin, and its superintendent Louis W. Francis. Also the owners of the factory, Ben Lauterstein and Irving H. Isaacs, of 206 Lexington Ave., N.Y. City. You will advise [257] why the factory is in present condition, and how to make it an exceptionally successful factory in 1928, giving conditions as warnings and advice as to its successful operation. You will answer the questions which I will ask you regarding these.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [257]. This we have had here before.
3. Now, the associations of the body consciousness with those conditions as surround Carolina Products Company, and the owners and operators of such factory, with its superintendent - as applied to the individual or the enquiring mind, much might be given as concerning this. Some information, however, concerning the manner and the way this has been handled heretofore is not at the present time for the knowledge of [257]. Sooner or later this may come, but may not be given until those as desire same may give it of their own accord.
4. There is seen there are conditions that are not satisfactory in the way conditions are existent in the factory at present. A portion of this, as seen, is on account of dissension, or the non-activity of the superintendent with the changes as are coming about; nor does the superintendent feel as kindly toward [257] as might be for the best interest of one acting in capacity of sales manager for products of concern. This, again, brings some dissension and some unpleasantness that makes for unsatisfactory conditions. These are as effects, rather than results of present conditions with the company or with the Carolina Products Company. Most of this must be

thrashed out among those owning or controlling same, rather than through that that might be given from here.
5. Ready for questions.
6. (Q) What should factory build? (A) That may be determined within the minds of those surrounding same. That as would be the better would be that which will keep the factory constantly in operation as near as possible, using not only the facilities of the factory but of the surrounding country; for with the various changes as do occur with the products of the company we will find there will be quite a different condition existent here in '28 and '29 from that as has existed heretofore. Follow these rather closely; for, as we shall see, with the expansion there will come many changes in the policies and in the operations themselves. No, the manner of the check-up on the product, or labor, or supplies, is not efficient enough.
7. (Q) Is it managed properly at present? (A) Save in this manner as given, very good.
8. (Q) Who is responsible for present status? (A) The owners and operators, for not supplying sufficient of red tape! Though it may be called an unnecessary expense; yet one may be penny wise and pound foolish, as illustrated from the condition as has existed here for the last eighteen months.
9. (Q) Give detailed outline for management to insure profitable year. (A) That must be from the owners; not from those who are interested, yet not capable, nor able, nor in a position to dictate policies or outline that which is desired to be done by; for there are other conditions being considered from this condition, and not - not as best that this be given at present.
10. (Q) Have we a proper accounting system? (A) Dependent upon how the accounting is termed. For products used and check-up on products as to be shipped, no. As to moneys, yes.
11. (Q) How can we give superintendent necessary assistance? (A) By supplying one capable and efficient in this particular line, as an assistant to superintendent.
12. (Q) How should this party be approached, and when? (A) Dependent upon who would be the party and how efficient the one is that desires to act as regarding products of the products factory.
13. (Q) Can present superintendent handle entire factory alone? if, not, advise steps to be taken.
257-23 Page 3
(A) Just as given.
14. (Q) Does factory require services of a good designer? (A) Not necessarily so. Most of the factories as desire products of this factory are their own designers, though many collaborations are necessary in bringing about the best products, and one that would act in the capacity of the check-up, or one that cooperates, collaborating with those desiring certain designs, and those of the factory in its deliveries - may act in the double capacity.
15. (Q) Is [257] capable of managing the factory and the sales at the same time? (A) No. Sales, but not the factory.
16. (Q) Will his sales plans as to Radio sales work out as planned with Chicago sales organization? (A) Very good, if these are carried forward and the deliveries are able to be made at the times and through the channels as has been outlined for it. Be sure that the abilities of those delivering products are such as these may not be hindered in time, in space given for such deliveries.
17. (Q) What plans have the president and treasurer for operating the division of business, and advise [257] how to carry them out? (A) This has not been wholly set as yet, for there are changes that are to be considered in the various policies that are to be outlined between now and the 15th to 20th of March. Many changes will come about in the handling of all the products of all the consolidations and its sales force, sales management, and distributing points and centers.
18. (Q) Which members of Committee should be eliminated? or should we keep as outlined? Advise. (A) Rather keep it as outlined.
19. (Q) How should the body proceed to get business of General Electric Company of Schenectady, N.Y., for 1928? (A) These may be made through those of General Electric engineers who seek for channels of distribution of the findings of that company; for, as is seen, these are as of engineers - not as of sales forces - and these may be gotten through Stern or Stumph.
20. (Q) How and where can he locate best radio cabinet designer? (A) Through any of the channels where these are being designed; especially through Brandes or through Karnes [?], Newark, N.J. [See 257-25 on 1/16/28.]
21. (Q) What unusual service can the body perform for firm in January? (A) Just give self in service towards the better gathering together of that necessary to make the policies for the consolidation such that would give each and every individual

concerned the chance and the opportunity to function as a unit toward the whole, and not be a strain or a drawback on the whole.
22. We are through.
