1. GC: Now you have before you the body and the enquiring mind of [257], present in this room, who seeks advice from the giver of all true and correct information, as to the proper handling of his personal, business and social affairs with his associates and family, and information on the Paris Medicine Company deal. You will answer the questions I will ask you regarding all of these.
2. EC: We have the body, the enquiring mind, [257]. This we have had before. Also those associations and relations as regarding the various conditions as affect this body, this mind, this life. Ready for questions.
3. (Q) Reference [257]'s deal with Paris Medicine Company of St. Louis, Missouri, and the Zonite Company, will it be entirely consummated as agreed upon before January 1, 1930? (A) As we find respecting this, if the agreements as have been set will be carried out by each, this will be consummated, and in seventeen to nineteen days the report will be given as to just when the settlements are to be made.
4. (Q) Have [257]'s agreements as to his commissions and share been legally and safely written? (A) They have.
5. (Q) Should [257] have any other signed agreements with anyone on the money? (A) These should be sufficient, for these are in proper order.
6. (Q) What date will Zonite notify Paris Medicine Company of its acceptance of deal and readiness to pay? (A) In nineteen days.
7. (Q) Will Grove be able to deliver all the stock of the company? (A) He will be able to deliver.
8. (Q) How will the stock market condition affect the final closing of the deal and paying of money? (A) This, as we find, will not have any material effect, for with the gradual stabilizing of conditions these will be
257-50 Page 2
OUT of any reference to these changes.
9. (Q) Should [257] have an attorney representing him at the closing time at St. Louis? (A) Lande.
10. (Q) Is it safe to leave [257]'s share of money in St. Louis bank? (A) For the time, yes.
11. (Q) What is best way and manner for [257] to accept money, as to income tax not being excessive? (A) Best to, as EARNED! No, you don't get that. As EARNED commissions for, as gift or as deal, or other than EARNED, would make a high rate, see?
12. (Q) Should a corporation be organized to accept money? (A) Best NOT. This would entail - while the excess would be greater, personal, the satisfaction and the correct manner would be direct, rather than corporation.
13. (Q) Is there an expert [257] could advise with as to the proper handling? (A) ANYONE that IS an AUTHORITY on such income reports, see? Sjostrom - Shroyer be very good - Butler be very good. Any of those that are acquainted with - Jack Smart would be fine! Any of these that are acquainted with the actual conditions.
14. (Q) How about J. I. Miller of Washington, D.C.? (A) Very good, but I would be afraid of some of the returns.
15. (Q) Has Grove any desire and scheme to prevent [257]'s full participation in deal? (A) No.
16. (Q) What further plan has Grove in mind for [257]? (A) This would be rather indeterminate at the present time. However, there are some associations that have been thought of, or contemplated, but these have more to do with western groups than [257] would wholly desire, and those of the eastern group - well, I wouldn't trust them too far.
17. (Q) Has the money all been provided for by Zonite Company? (A) It has. They say it hasn't, but it has.
18. (Q) Should [257] do or say anything to the purchasing group, Zonite or General McRoberts? (A) General McRoberts rather the one to handle this, for these are the sources and the groups through which this is being provided for.
19. (Q) Should [257] make money out of Zonite stock, when announced or before, and how proceed? (A) We wouldn't take advantage of that at present. Rather
257-50 Page 3
wait until the announcement.
20. (Q) Will radio cabinet business be injured by stock market condition? (A) It will have its influence, and will be felt considerably in most all sections of the country - will make a deficit possibly of twenty to twenty-five percent.
21. (Q) When will stock market stabilize itself? (A) After Thanksgiving.
22. (Q) Will radio be forced to 15 to 20 next week? (A) We do not find it so.
23. (Q) Since [257] has held Macy, Radio and Sears, should he continue to hold, since he has held it so far? (A) This as has been given. Can the body provide for the holding of same, as has been given, these are of those that will prove VERY valuable. Or, as has been given, if NOT able to JUSTLY carry out the contract, then well to sell and buy at the lower rates - though THESE, as we find, have reached NEAR their lowest ebb; for, while Radio may go to twenty-five, twenty-three, yet this has been hedged so far. As is seen in Roebuck, may go almost to par - yet, before the first of April, it will be worth more than one fifty-six. Macy, as we find, while as low as one eighty, or one eighty-five, will - before April - be at least two sixty to two seventy - with many variations in between. ACT in a manner in keeping with that that will cause the least WORRY to self and others.
24. (Q) Should [900] help [257] further at this time? [See 257-20 on 7/29/27 & 900-417, Par. 2-A on 12/3/28.] (A) That's for that body to say. As the conditions exist, the help HAS been given. We wouldn't stretch it too far.
25. (Q) What stocks should [257] buy on Monday's market, if any, or sell short to regain his losses in part? (A) As WE would see, as we have given, this a VERY poor market to deal in on margin. A very GOOD market to deal in on whole purchase. We would be OUT for a few days.
26. (Q) Should [257] stand on prices quoted Atwater Kent Company of Philadelphia? (A) Stand on same!
27. (Q) Will they be safe to do large quantity of business with? (A) Safe.
28. (Q) Will 1930 be a successful radio year, beginning now, to manufacture cabinets? (A) After the first of April will be a successful radio year.
29. (Q) Should [257] follow up merger plans with Radio Victor Corporation? (A) Follow up.
257-50 Page 4
30. (Q) How can he improve plans already started? (A) Just build little by little on that that's already begun, see?
31. (Q) Has he an appointment with the right people at Camden? Shoemaker and Wyland? (A) For the beginning, yes.
32. (Q) Will G.E. and Westinghouse still be in position to buy during 1928-30 radio year as last season? (A) With about the deficiency as given.
33. (Q) Should [257] remain in cabinet business or go into another field. (A) Cabinet business is well.
34. (Q) How can [257] improve his handling of factory at Asheville, N.C.? (A) This would possibly entail much consideration, due principally to the various plans as have been considered as respecting same. There needs be no let-up in the coalition idea, and there could also be considered other - and even smaller - combines in connection, or other smaller factories. While this may necessitate a re-vamping for the final consummation, it the vamping - will also enable [257] to gradually produce more and better quantity and quality in factory, and will enable the ones so handling to gain at least a thirty-three and third percent ON the handling. Not only of the product but in the final consummation of a coalition with the factory and other combines or groups having trade agents, or selling agents. Then, consider ALL of these, and all the various ways. Now, as to handling for the PRESENT surroundings, present conditions, this may be kept busy - and on a paying basis, even - with the groups already in hand that will continue to place orders through [257] and factory, see?
35. (Q) Should [257] organize new selling agencies, such as Carl Maesel Corporation? (A) These are very good. Don't go too fast with these, for these are easily overloaded or overbalanced, see? for this would have a tendency to both be of benefit - as an outlet for rejections, or conditions arising - and if worked from that basis, but STILL kept on a high plane of operation, would be WONDERFUL! but, operated improperly, would become one as a competitive operation, rather than so much assisting. Get the idea?
36. (Q) Should wood cabinet corporation be continued along present lines? (A) We would!
37. (Q) Why have they been unsuccessful so far this year? (A) Just the organization getting, as it were, in its
257-50 Page 5
stride. NOT a fault in the handling, nor in the management. Rather that over zealousness of having same in and about certain definite lines, and that has proven expensive. It's ready to make money!
38. (Q) Should they enlarge their lines? (A) Only as necessity demands it.
39. (Q) Has [257] made wise selection of Ben Witlen as his assistant? (A) This may be seen a little farther along.
40. (Q) What plan for selling cabinets will be most successful for 1928-30 radio year? (A) The general plan as has been followed by [257].
41. (Q) What will happen to Kolster Company 1928-30? (A) Coalition, as we find.
42. (Q) Who are the best people for them to get together with? (A) Fada, or Fryberg, or Feinberg.
43. (Q) Will they be successful 1929-30? (A) They should be.
44. (Q) Shall we continue suit against the Amrad Company, who broke a contract with Federal? (A) Sending good money after bad!
45. (Q) How can they successfully end the suit at this time? (A) Compromise as to furnishings for a portion of that held by the company for the use in that of beginning in the distributing company of other lines, see?
46. (Q) Is the Crossley Company referred to here? (A) Crossley Company.
47. (Q) How much should be the compromise price acceptable to them? (A) At least seventy-five to seventy-eight percent.
48. (Q) Should [257] go to Boston to see them? (A) Should.
49. (Q) Are Emerson Radio Company safe to sell? (A) At present.
50. (Q) How can [257] approach General Motors to sell them cabinets, and where? (A) Best, as WE would find, would be through their offices in Dayton and Cleveland, in the association of Day-Fan and its cabinet connections, and of those in the other ends that come under cabinet heads - as of the boxes - see?
51. (Q) Do you refer to Radio-Victor? (A) That 's a portion of a subsidiary, but rather other boxes - as ice boxes, and such - in cabinets, see?
52. (Q) Should George Baldwin be asked to assist at this time? (A) Very good time. Be later before it will be worked out, but it's on the right track, and may eventually be worked out.
53. (Q) Should he make his contact to Mr. Sloan direct?
257-50 Page 6
(A) Better through those of the offices in Dayton and Cleveland, than to Sloan direct - at present. Gradually work to that.
54. (Q) Should [257] have Walker Land associated at Asheville? (A) Be well to do so, if it can be worked for the combination of these - would be well.
55. (Q) Advise [257] about his health. (A) This hasn't changed materially from that as has been given, regarding the care and the attention as is necessary for the physical and mental well-being of the body. Do not overtax. Do not eat when overtaxed. Do not fail to play as well as work. Do not fail to relax mentally and physically. We are through. Copy to Self " " Ass'n office " " Datastician
