1. GC: You will have before you the body and the enquiring mind of [257], present in this room, and all his business associations and relations. You will answer all the questions which he will ask you regarding these and all phases of his life.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [257] - his business associations and relations, and all phases of his life. Ready for questions.
3. (Q) Regarding the physical - what treatment should body take as directed to clarify head that would help and prevent conditions arising later on? (A) Correction of those conditions in the cerebrospinal, through manipulation and correction taken sufficiently often to keep an adjustment throughout the cerebrospinal system; for in the general activities of the life, the sedentary activities in many ways - posture as kept at many times - these make for a condition in the cerebrospinal system that gives tendencies as in the line given - the circulatory forces and the movements of the head to prevent those conditions in the capillary circulation, as to the head and to the central circulation, as to the feet - for the lymphatic and capillary circulation.
4. (Q) How often should he go to the doctor? (A) When needed.
5. (Q) Should I continue taking soda, and for how long? (A) When necessary, take it. Do not overdo. It's just as bad to get the body unbalanced with the alkalin as the acid. In taking a change occasionally to the carbohydrates will be much better than just the soda - see? Like Upjohn's carbohydrates, or Walt's Alsace Lorraine (?), or something like it - see?
6. (Q) In using [for the scalp] olive oil and crude, can this mixture be made and used from week to week, or must it be newly mixed each time? (A) Best to keep them separate and mix when they are to be
257-66 Page 2
used. One spoonful, or one drop of the crude with ten drops of the olive - see? or that proportion - one to ten.
7. (Q) Please advise me specifically what my attitude should be to the new and old officers, for my guidance and the association with the affairs of Federal Wood Products Corp? (A) The body should insist, and remain as one of those officers in the first. Then the attitude and the relations should be that in the way of at least keeping separate those operations and activities of self as to new business, and then insist upon the officers of, and those of the conditions as in past for an equitable settlement in the conditions - see?
8. (Q) What attitude should I have with Mr. Goldman, the new treasurer of the holding company? (A) This would be very much in the same sort of attitude as may be seen in the NECESSITY of the conditions; that is, as the conditions are to be kept separate - or separations in their activities - then the attitude of the good business associate and relation as an officer, manager, director and sales-manager for such conditions - see?
9. (Q) Should [257] sign checks with him? (A) When necessary for handling of the better conditions of the business.
10. (Q) Can he be implicitly trusted by me? (A) In the present. As to what the changes are to be later on, that may depend upon different activities that arise.
11. (Q) What is Goldman's feeling and attitude to me? (A) Very amiable.
12. (Q) Should I risk a break with Goldman by complaining to Newman, as to Goldman's manner of handling disbursements and audits? (A) Yes.
13. (Q) What should I say to Newman if this happens? (A) Act in the same capacity, or in the same manner as is effective in all GOOD business arrangements and associations for the good of all concerned.
14. (Q) How can I get the full confidence of Goldman and keep it, for my best interests? (A) These are conflicting as to the conditions as just given! but do NOT in ANY manner be in the way, or act in the way of attempting to keep BY favors or conditions of the nature - see?
15. (Q) What is the best way to handle James Newman? Advise me as to the amount of confidence I can place in Newman's word and action. (A) That's different! This is in a different way and manner! Favors and appreciations here are of a different
257-66 Page 3
nature - these are not as being made to subserve to those ideals or ideas of the body, but rather in that of the COOPERATIVE measures - see?
16. (Q) Advise me as to the amount of confidence I can place in Newman's word and action? (A) That, with this individual, is very much as to how much confidence or how much veracity is expressed - that much is returned. This would apply very well to all who are in the way of being at least in a manner of activity with the appreciations. Get the inference?
17. (Q) What is Newman's opinion as to my ability and personality? (A) That is most to be builded; that is, as has been outlined or may be taken from that given of something of the character of the personality of the individual. To him (to Newman) who is honest to him, Newman is honest. To him who is undermining to him, Newman is undermining. To him whose abilities are manifested in an exemplary manner, to him the abilities or the appreciations are shown.
18. (Q) How can I get and keep Newman's confidence? (A) Give same!
19. (Q) What will Mr. Tompers' attitude as special representative of executive committee to me at the meeting which is planned in ten days? (A) Rather of an indifference, but in a manner as of this: Now much has been said - much is being required in many ways from the efforts. Now show 'em to me!
20. (Q) What should I say to Tompers in the event activities of mine are attempted to be curtailed? (A) From that as just given this will not be indicated, if those of an even personality or even being will be met with those necessities of showing results by the activities - see?
21. (Q) What should I say as to my contract with Federal Wood Products Corp? (A) That depends upon the first question as asked respecting same.
22. (Q) What should I say with reference to my expectations, should the firm attempt to close the factory - which is the only means I have of making more than my drawing account? (A) Then make the arrangements with other factories, if this is attempted! Let 'em know that it will be for making other associations and affiliations! and don't allow self to be out off from that activity, should these conditions be even considered of spoken of - see?
23. (Q) What should I say to the committee as to the prospects for future business and profits without being over
257-66 Page 4
optimistic, and yet justifying the continuance of the business? (A) By the fruits ye shall know them! that is, as may be shown by those of the balance sheets, in the activities, in the various efforts of the body itself in respect to the various conditions that have been shown in the various lines, in the various places, and the branches of same. These may be expected to be made equal to, or near so as general conditions will permit to be kept to that equal, or even better.
24. (Q) How will it compare with 1929? (A) That's a banner, as it were, now. These, as given, will compare well, considering the circumstances and conditions, yet showing much of a profit - see?
25. (Q) If Tompers suggests combining Carolina with Federal Wood Products for profits and losses, what position should I take - and what new basis should be arrived at? (A) Well, this would require considerable consideration, for the variations from the "put and take" propositions that have existed with these various outlets or channels make a great deal of difference. That as is considered by self should be with that channel particularly through which the efforts of the body have been expended - see ?
26. (Q) Meaning the sales company only? (A) Meaning the sales company only.
27. (Q) Is it to my best interests to combine these two? (A) Wouldn't be for immediate - would be for eventualities, provided many of the conditions or circumstances that have been asked concerning are not altered or changed - see? These are some conflicting conditions that are being presented.
28. (Q) What should I say to Tompers about $384,000 taken from the Federal Wood Products Corp. without my consent or knowledge? (A) As to the capacity of an officer and the interest as shown in that by the body and the body's activities as respecting the conditions that are to be met - see?
29. (Q) What statement should I make to justify my making a claim for $175,000 in the year 1929? (A) Show the balance sheets. This has been gone over before - see? Show these balance sheets, and as to who, how, where, under what circumstance the various contracts made BY the body brought it those claimed - see?
30. (Q) How can I build up this claim and justify it for one year, when part of this claim goes back to the old management under Lauterstein, who does not want the old scores opened up? (A) Be hard to do without the old scores opened up, so this will have to be - then - CURTAILED just that much, yet this
257-66 Page 5
does not CHANGE the status of the conditions when this is shown; neither does it open the old sores when it is shown that it IS the outgrowth OF the efforts of the body during the period. Rather shows that of the building, or the ability to build - see?
31. (Q) Should I insist on filing a claim for each year, beginning with 1924 through 1930, against the Albert Pick group - or better follow Lauterstein-Boskey advice and take what I can get on claim for one year 1929 only? (A) He should insist. Follow through for the whole thing. THEN the claim is ALWAYS open for '29.
32. (Q) If I make claim for 1929 only and do not get what is due me, can I still open up the back claim which was purchased as a liability by Pick? (A) Best to open up from the back claim and the last claim is ALWAYS open - see?
33. (Q) What position will Lauterstein be placed in if it becomes known that he did not put 1928 commissions due [257] on the books? (A) That's very bad position! These, as we find, show that the attempt to carry both of those conditions as confronted the body under the circumstances will be made QUESTIONED. Now as to THIS position as is taken by Lauterstein-Boskey group, this makes a variation - of course - in the claims as may be made - see? yet if the first claims will be set, then the chips have to fall where they will or may.
34. (Q) I was advised to stick with Lauterstein group - how can I do that and collect my money? (A) That has nothing to do with what is DUE the body! Sticking to the group is why that he should be able to collect it! for there is as much BEFORE the group in the same way and manner of the various propositions being presented, as MUCH more than that behind, and Lauterstein and group are able to see that - as well as the conditions in which they are being placed - see? Now one may be balanced against another. This may make a long drawn out, but then let that settlement be made in - Now these once considered; that is, the claims, see? and remaining with the group, to be sure, and the claims for '29 paid, then RECOGNIZING that there are claims by [257] on the group, when the group forego their interest in those that are continuing to come in and being set up - until such a time as the full amount as may be claimed or may be set up is settled. That isn't quite clear! As is seen, there are many varied propositions brought to the group Lauterstein and others by [257]. There is set up in each of these an equitable division among those of the group of the profits
257-66 Page 6
of those sharing out of same. Let [257]'s share be made, then, sufficiently more - little by little - that these other claims FROM those of Lauterstein's and groups are taken care of.
35. (Q) Should I ask Lauterstein to give me part of the guarantee which Jonas gave him? (A) That's the idea!
36. (Q) What reason will I have for not collecting what was due me prior to January 1, 1929? (A) There's no reason - that's why we have just set up what we have! unless that all are to share alike and in this is the building or the background for that being accomplished, and all are to share alike in the losses of same - but [257] only shared in the losses and not in any of the profits!
37. (Q) Should Lauterstein and Isaacs pay me the deficiency between what I can get for 1929 and what is due me from the old administration? (A) They should.
38. (Q) How can I remain loyal to Lauterstein and yet maintain my business and keep the friendship and cooperation necessary to run my business with the new group - Newman, Tompers, Goldman? (A) Just in the manner as has been outlined. Make this as much a personal thing with the group of Lauterstein's as of any condition that is to be made in the new arrangements.
39. (Q) Why has Meyer Boskey assumed his present attitude as to my settlement when it is different from his original statement? (A) The difference in the positions of those who are interested is same, difference in their financial position, difference in the policies, in [257]'s abilities himself with his association.
40. (Q) Please advise Boskey as to the right and just position which he should take with reference to me? (A) In that same as has been outlined, as should be for those associates of Lauterstein and group as regarding those that have been due as regarding the back conditions - see? They recognize it! Then make the legality of same in its recognition by a little at a time if not whole at time - see?
41. (Q) Why didn't Lauterstein and Isaacs settle with me before 1929 when everyone else received their settlements in full? (A) Hoping to hold to the body and the efforts through those various channels as necessary for their own ability to hold on, and as they were NOT settled at that time, then THEIR associations and their connections should be such as to signify their willingness to at least carry on in the manner as outlined.
257-66 Page 7
42. (Q) What date should I insist as the final date, considering the safety of my claim, to settle with the firm? (A) Not later than June 30th.
43. (Q) Is there any danger of receivership in the Pick organization? (A) There's been several - these have been referred to before, but with the various elements as are being made, these are gradually being gotten farther and farther away in most instances.
44. (Q) Should I engage a personal lawyer at this time to advise me as these various matters arise and to protect my interests? (A) Should!
45. (Q) Who should he be? (A) Any one of those that are efficient and capable, in ESPECIALLY those lines of associations and connections of this character and nature.
46. (Q) Would deLacey be good? (A) Be an excellent man!
47. (Q) Should I continue to work up new business and new deals before the past is settled? (A) These should be worked up in order that these may be taken care of in a manner or in a way as outlined, and these may be made safe.
48. (Q) Should I meet Mr. Gibson, president of the Manufacturers Trust Co. or his representative Mr. Dunn? (A) Either or both.
49. (Q) Should I meet them through Gen. McRoberts or Jim Newman? (A) Either or both. Each have their difference of connections, see? difference of impress or import as will come from same, see?
50. (Q) Which one should I go through first? (A) McRoberts would be well.
51. (Q) If I meet either one, should I tell them my experience in full without reservation? (A) Should. According to advice of counsel, though, in these conditions and connections - see?
52. (Q) Should I visit Mr. Joe Hartfield of White & Case, Mr. Gibson's attorneys? (A) Later on. Not too fast with them.
53. (Q) Is there any future for me with the Gibson interests, or should I begin to make plans for new associations? (A) These followed out, and when these leads would be made - very well.
54. (Q) Will it be necessary for a lawsuit to get my full settlement? (A) Should not be.
55. (Q) What is the least amount I should accept? (A) That should be made best with own self. If on the basis and in the manner which has been outlined, why should
257-66 Page 8
there be ANY differentiation - save as may be seen necessary for the building up or the adding to for the new business!
56. (Q) Should I insist on being a director of Federal Wood Products and remaining as president? (A) That's been given!
57. (Q) What arrangements should I now make as to time of division for profits that will be made in 1931? (A) Regular semi-annually.
58. (Q) Should I plan to leave the firm in 1931? (A) That would depend upon circumstances and associations and conditions. Do not tie self so it's not able to!
59. (Q) What will be the most important factor for my success in the running of the business in the future? (A) The associations and connections.
60. (Q) Who will be the most important factor? (A) That depends upon whom the body makes so!
61. (Q) What shall I say as to the cost now being shown at the factory? (A) Say as to what it is!
62. (Q) Should I be expected to carry the entire overhead of the factory without additional selling organization, for the sale of furniture? (A) If necessary, then carry it. The body may - is able to carry it, if the PRIVILEGES are given the body TO carry it - but if they are to CURTAIL those privileges, ENABLING the body to carry it to meet the needs of existing circumstances and conditions as a whole, then it's different!
63. (Q) Should I take the contract from the quartermaster corp on furniture on which I am now figuring? (A) That will depend upon the status before this order is to be finally placed. Some portion of it may be taken, because it be divided out - see? This is a very good prizing wedge - see?
64. (Q) How can I get Capt. Gere to give me his full support? (A) Gradually work in - not worm in - but gradually work in with those various channels that will offer themselves as the work progresses.
65. (Q) Are there any outside commissions to be given in the landing of this business? (A) Not in the present, and not as direct. Many on the side.
66. (Q) How far can I use my acquaintance with the various officials of the War Department to get this business? (A) They would be used as a matter of fact; not as a pressure or as such, but as the ordinary or regular conditions carried with same - their prestige with same, see?
257-66 Page 9
67. (Q) Is it best to work direct through the channels now contracted or through a broker named Hoyt in Chicago? (A) Direct.
68. (Q) How will new prices compare with old? (A) Compare favorably.
69. (Q) Should I continue leaving the estate stock in the hands of Lande? [Isaac Lande] (A) Very good.
70. (Q) Should I sell any of it? (A) Not at present.
71. (Q) What stock is safe to buy for thirty day turnover to help Cayce and [257] in present emergency? (A) Very few of them would be SAFE to buy, for there will be many changes - not much stabilization until after the middle of April, see? After that there may be some changes that would be worth while. Then we would consider such as those of Case or Timkin (?), or such nature as that - Radio, of course, Keith - these will stabilize, but VERY poor for speculative purposes - may be well for holding, or long time holding.
72. (Q) Should Radio now be bought at 25? (A) You can buy it now at 22!
73. (Q) How long should we hold it? (A) It's already going down, and still going down lower 0 - why buy it?
74. (Q) Will Kolster be a safe buy at present price? (A) Not in the present circumstances and conditions as surround same. These, as we find, when the new changes - or these alterations in the re-establishment of the forces - these would be some better. These will STILL be later, with the general conditions of the market.
75. (Q) With whom could I combine Carolina interests for best success of all? (A) These have been approached before through some interest, see? These are not other than in abeyance - they haven't been entirely forgotten. As we find, in the general conditions, these may be carried through any of those SUBSIDIES of the radio.
76. (Q) Would this be the time to approach General Motors again? (A) Not quite yet. A little bit later.
77. (Q) Is that worth waiting for? (A) Worth waiting for, but not wait - as you know, sometimes you make people anxious by somebody else about to get it!
78. (Q) Who is the best man in Radio-Victor to work with? (A) Valse (?) or Voltz (?), or some such name as that.
257-66 Page 10
79. (Q) Should I use Gen. Harboard in any way? (A) Not in the beginning of any association. This may be as a wedge or a prize for some opening.
80. (Q) Will I be successful with my contract with the May-Hartman-Hahn group? (A) This EVENTUALLY - but there are some mixes. There is some other interest in between. These seem to be gradually working themselves out.
81. (Q) What shall I do to protect myself for a success with this group? (A) Follow along the channels or lines in which the body has made the associations and connections. These are very good.
82. (Q) Will they be successful in carrying out their plans in 1931? (A) Be the latter part if they are!
83. (Q) Will I be successful with the Zero Zone Refrigerator proposition on the basis agreed between Richland and [5597]? (A) This should prove most satisfactory.
84. (Q) What should I do to protect my own interests? (A) Keep 'em in black and white and on the dotted line! 1
85. (Q) What arrangements should be made with [5597] of Chicago to successfully handle this deal? (A) These need some other pushing forces from some of the larger holdings, or large distributing centers, see?
86. (Q) How shall I go about getting them? (A) Don't do all the work! Make him do some of it! Show him what is necessary - for some of the abilities are there also! [5/8/31 See 257-67 including Mr. [5597].] [9/26/31 See 257-72, Par. 12-A--14-A.]
87. (Q) Where would be the best outlet for me to sell these refrigerators in large quantities? (A) Don't be too over anxious at once on the large! Get them started in, see?
88. (Q) Working the smaller concerns first? (A) Work the smaller concerns first, and making the bigger demands.
89. (Q) Should I keep this outside of Federal Wood Products? (A) At present BEST, unless some other changes are made.
90. (Q) What advantage to the work at Virginia Beach will there be in my visiting Messrs. Herman and John Black of Chicago? [Work:EC] (A) This will depend upon the relationships and how, and the manner in which they are kept. These have already been
257-66 Page 11
opened. Let their approach again come from or through them or their request for this meeting or association - see?
91. (Q) Advise me as to how I should approach these men, when they send for me? (A) See that the results are obtained through those, or that information as given - or may be given - as respecting same; for with the questions as may be obtained, then requests - but DON'T take the larger end of the advertising, as they will insist on! Keep quiet!
92. (Q) When should Cayce go to N.Y.? (A) When it's necessary.
93. (Q) When would it be advisable? (A) When it's necessary.
94. (Q) Should Cayce go to Chicago soon? (A) What for!
95. (Q) To meet new people - make contacts. (A) Best to do with that in hand, and not get too much overhead.
96. (Q) Advise me how to arrange meetings at N.Y. to the best 2 interests? [Work:EC] (A) Let the purpose be set forth, aims and desires, see? and then in the various groups, let THESE be expressed, THESE be manifested - and those who SEEK for same in these may be of aid - see? Best to keep that in hand, and that WELL done, than to open too many new fields and that half done!
97. (Q) Is it advisable to keep a small group as we had suggested last night? (A) Whosoever will, let him come! but let him have the urge - let him know WHY he is coming!
98. (Q) How can we take care of all these people? (A) These will be taken care of AS the necessities arise. We are through for the present. Copy to Self " " File
