Time of Reading 11:25 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. ..., N.Y.
1. GC: You will have before you the body and the enquiring mind of [257], present in this room, and all his associations and business problems. You will advise him what to do to prevent any embarrassment to him, should Pick-Barth, Federal group, go into receivership. You will answer the questions which will be asked concerning these relationships:
2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [257] - this we have had before, also the associations and relations.
3. In respects the attitude, or what the body should do to prevent embarrassments - as we find, there is, as it were, an existent condition as if Barth was IN receivership, by - or the manner in which same is being handled in the present. There, to be sure, is an OPENING - or a POSSIBILITY of same being ANNOUNCED as a receivership, but not LIKELY should or would those conditions be carried ON as they are in the present. While it will require the putting up of more moneys on the part of the financial backers, the involvements in so many directions are such that it NECESSITATES that many attitudes and many conditions be protected, that these SHOULD be carried on for the protection of those investments in so many VARIED directions! Then, KNOWING these conditions as the body does, it behooves the body to be in a position WITH those handling same that the interests of the body are WITH those who are IN the position to make the protection for the various ones that ARE the producers for the carrying on of the various departments, or those portions that are NECESSARY TO be carried for the protection, see? Ready for questions.
4. (Q) Will they be forced to go into involuntary bankruptcy in 1931? (A) As has been given, this is a possibility - but are they able to carry on with those departments that are the PRODUCING ones, see? then the gradual weeding out of those departments of those portions that are NOT of a PRODUCING
257-68 Page 2
nature, will PREVENT that PORTION of same BEING in the bankruptcy proceedings. As is seen, there are MANY involve- ments - so that it would be, without going into - Many INDIVIDUALS' activities - many combined; but for the protection BE with those who are in the position TO care for the conditions as the changes come about!
5. (Q) How could I get on a friendly basis with Tampers and work with him, if I should? (A) This not absolutely necessary, though this may be accomplished by showing more interest; yet this would be an admitting of weakness in other directions in some respects, for this becomes an involved condition when we even attempt to say as to the manner in which - but be interested more IN the things in which Tampers is interested, which - in this PARTICULAR PERIOD of time - is attempting to save SOME of those WHOM he KNOWS have NOT been PRODUCERS in the things that are at a loss in the present - see?
6. (Q) Should [257] work more closely with Newman at this time? (A) This would be well.
7. (Q) What is my best approach to Newman now to help him? (A) In those things, or that portion of the undertakings that are NEW, that Newman is interested in.
8. (Q) Will Ralph Jonas come to the rescue of the Lauterstein - Isaacs interests? (A) As we find, he will, in a very - or comparatively short time. Necessary, for protection of himself in other directions.
9. (Q) Should [257] continue to work closely with Lauterstein - Isaacs interests? (A) We would work very closely with Lauterstein interests. Those do not always conform nor confine themselves to Isaacs' interests, but as a general - yes.
10. (Q) Is this the proper time for me to visit Gibson of the Manufacturers Trust Co.? (A) Would be very well. Rather depend, of course, upon the MANNER and the whyfore OF the approach, which would come through some of those interests in which [257] and Lauterstein are interested - see? where these may be of considerable interest to those in which Gibson is interested, in those PORTIONS of the things - which, as we see, is of those of the mechanical natures.
11. (Q) What particular business do you refer to? (A) It's a freezer of some kind.
12. (Q) Has Charles Riegelman, my attorney, done all he should, and can, to get my settlement through at once? (A) These are being carried forward in a very equitable manner.
257-68 Page 3
13. (Q) What is the proper move for the coming week for the attorney to get my settlement? (A) Just get the two together in an agreement whereby these may be made, or the settlements may be made over a period - or as conditions develop.
14. (Q) In what way can I justify the basis of cost, figuring to force acknowledgement of my claim by the Pick interests? (A) By the manner in which, as has been outlined BY the lawyer as respecting same.
15. (Q) Is there anything [257] can add to that now? (A) Not at the present, as we find.
16. (Q) Is my contract safe with Federal Wood Products Corp., under the present conditions? (A) For the present, it is.
17. (Q) Is it advisable for me to purchase the Federal Wood Products Corp. or attempt to organize my own business? (A) Be better to organize the own business, as we find, for there are some INVOLVEMENTS in - yet these, with the proper interests as of those who HAVE been interested in the manufacturing end of such products as may be had through these channels, would be very well.
18. (Q) What particular persons do you refer to? (A) Those who have been heads of manufacturing interests, that have used products manufactured by the Federal Wood Products - see?
19. (Q) Should I take on special factories for manufacturing of refrigerators and furniture for my brothers, instead of getting these factories for the Federal Wood Products Corp. over which I have such little control? (A) Be better for these to be outside; especially with the possibilities of tie-up IN the various things through the coming conditions as are arising from time to time.
20. (Q) Should Lauterstein be included in that plan, or excluded? (A) He may be included, provided there is the proper association or proper arrangement or understanding or agreement made when such things are done. Might be approached - the subject would be broached, and he is open for such suggestions - for he realizes the conditions as exist, to be sure!
21. (Q) What is his attitude now as to [257]'s future and the settlement? (A) He doesn't desire to be separated from [257] with the various developments, or various conditions that are arising from time to time. Hence he is attempting to make, or his attitude is as equitable settlement - or, to describe in a few words, it's very much as has been given heretofore, he's very able to carry a chip on both shoulders, yet a man who
257-68 Page 4
may be relied upon when once he's given his whole word!
22. (Q) Would I be successful handling the Sears Furniture Plant of Indianapolis, Ind., representing them in contract work? (A) Be fine!
23. (Q) On what basis should I join them now? (A) On either the cost-plus basis, or that so much and the regular or the form of the commissions that are ordinarily given in such conditions.
24. (Q) Are they responsible financially? (A) They are responsible financially at the present.
25. (Q) Advise me how to organize my affairs successfully to carry out the new plan and protect my future? (A) These are of so many and of such VARIED conditions! Would be well were they crystallized into some form where they would be separate interests, yet a combined interest - so far as self is concerned. Get that?
26. (Q) Is that in line with the organization of the Kentucky Estates, Inc.? (A) That's the same CHARACTER, or the way and manner in which these are outlined - see?
27. (Q) And separate interests for each Co.? (A) Separate interests for each company.
28. (Q) And then held in the holdings company of Kentucky Estates? (A) Held in the holdings company.
29. (Q) What improvements to the Lande plan for the manufacturing and merchandising of Midget Maid Wool Soap will the Forces suggest? (A) We would not change from that as is already outlined or being carried out. An expansion may be made in the manner in which distributions may be made, or the representatives in various territories. This of itself requires that some time, some attention be given to the placing of that in individuals, or with individuals, or with companies in various territories, giving territories for the distribution of same.
30. (Q) Is the sampling plan the best one? (A) It's a very good one. It's an EXPENSIVE one, in some ways and manners, to be sure! but it is the BEST way to insure a LONG time activity from same - see?
31. (Q) What improvements can be made to the product itself to make it a sure seller with large profit? (A) We would not change it in the present form, or present way.
32. (Q) Would collidal soap be of any advantage in the marketing of this product? (A) We do not find it so.
33. (Q) Are the Forces now ready to give us the substitute
257-68 Page 5
for steel wool upon which they have been working for several months and which they promised to give us? (A) Why combine this with this very article that it is to be a substitute for, in the present? until this has been carried sufficiently far where it's necessary to add that which will be of a different or a varied effect, see? These, as will be seen, will be made from a VEGETABLE compound, and will be combined WITH chemicals in the soap weed and the soap wood itself, see?
34. (Q) When should we ask for information again? (A) When this has run its course!
35. (Q) Is the Plaut-Weill-Lande partnership a good and safe one for me? (A) This is very good. Some consideration should be given as respecting some of the associates and individuals, but a very good connection.
36. (Q) Should they be in the manufacturing or just distributing? (A) The distributing end, to be sure, is the larger END of same.
37. (Q) What should my attitude be in reference to Ben Lauterstein on new propositions, such as Midget Maid soap and refrigerators? (A) As has been suggested for some time, and has just been given above here, while the individual, the body, is capable and able to carry a chip - as it were - on both shoulders, the body is one that does NOT desire to be separated from the interests in which [257] is interested; yet on account of existent or past conditions there are some attitudes that makes questions arise in the mind. With a settlement once out of the way, then we may find the associations and the relations quite beneficial to both.
38. (Q) Will I be successful with the Gibson Refrigerator Corp. of Greenville, Michigan, selling their product to the Westinghouse Co. of Springfield, Mass.? (A) Well, there's a question here with these, for there are other interests that have already been broached, or approached, and some promises made. Eventually, as we find, this may be carried to a consummation that would be satisfactory.
39. (Q) I don't quite understand that. Please explain. (A) There have been other propositions offered to these individuals. Get that?
40. (Q) Gibson or Westinghouse? (A) Westinghouse, and there have been promises made in that direction - see? Then, to present ANOTHER proposition, see (the Gibson), makes for some entanglements for some individuals that have made promises, see? but eventually
257-68 Page 6
this may be overcome.
41. (Q) In that case, what refrigerator firm should [257] endeavor to represent? (A) That one from which these have been making their overtures for their representation!
42. (Q) Is that the Tennessee Furniture Co.? (A) Tennessee Furniture Company.
43. (Q) Can [257] be successful in getting that factory now? (A) Little by little. I don't see it in the present.
44. (Q) Who would be the proper approach now for the future? (A) Some of those who are interested in the Westinghouse.
45. (Q) What kind of contract between Ben Gordon of Redmon & Co., who own the Alaska Refrigerator Co. of Muskegon, Mich., will be safe and satisfactory so I can sell Westinghouse and other large companies refrigerators? (A) This may be made on that basis in which there are those commissions for the actual work done by [257] in his representing the manufacturer in these various directions, and this would make the most satisfactory one - see?
46. (Q) Can they be trusted implicitly? (A) With a contract, sure!
47. (Q) Which is the better connection, Gordon, Gibson, or the Tennessee Furniture Co. of Chattanooga, Tenn., for me to represent in the sale of refrigerators? (A) Gordon and the Tennessee Furniture.
48. (Q) Advise and direct me as to my efforts in the next 90 days, so that I won't make mistakes in the handling of my affairs and jeopardize present contract with Federal. (A) Just follow these ways or lines as given, in the various associations and connections as with those who are tied in, in one manner or another, with the Federal or with those of the Pick-Barth peoples - see?
49. (Q) Meaning that Lauterstein should be connected with all of them? (A) To be sure.
50. (Q) Would Fred Dietrich be a good partner for me in a new enterprise, and in which one would we be best suited together? (A) In one, were the body to purchase a factory for distribution of products in which Dietrich has been or may be interested.
51. (Q) Would refrigerator be a good one? (A) Eventually so, but he's not sold on those so much as on others.
52. (Q) Would Radio be one now? (A) Radio will be one, with the new things that are coming - yes.
53. (Q) When will television come?
257-68 Page 7
(A) Thirty-two.
54. (Q) Will Tampers purchase Federal Wood Products Corp. and Carolina from Pick? (A) This, of course, is dependent upon a great many other interests, and is LIABLE to happen; yet there are questions as respecting same. He's not fully made up his mind as YET.
55. (Q) CAN Tampers buy them if he wants to? (A) He CAN, it he wants to; that is, with the arrangements that he has in mind. He hasn't decided, though, as yet.
56. (Q) Would that make it impossible for [257] to stay with the firm? (A) Not impossible, but would be dependent upon some of the other associations, or some of the other connections - as has been outlined, see?
57. (Q) What will be the business conditions as far as Federal Wood Products is concerned in the next four months? (A) In a general way, they will be very satisfactory as far as the Federal Wood Products is concerned; that is, as to the receipts and as to the proper working out of that already in hand.
58. (Q) How can [257] be successful, and through what channels, with Int. Tel & Tel, Kolster Radio? (A) Through those channels in which there has been an approach on the Kolster Radio, as well as that as an associate of the Tel & Tel. Through that channel. Those who have called as respecting the opening of, or the combination of that, and the re-organization of same.
59. (Q) Will Tel & Tel be successful in that Kolster business? (A) Be VERY successful.
60. (Q) In what way can [257] be more closely allied with them? (A) By keeping in closer touch with those interests, as has just been given, see?
61. (Q) Would I be able to put our factory in that combine? (A) We see no REASON why it should NOT be!
62. (Q) Is this the proper time to approach them? (A) NOT for the most money to be made from the putting it in! It is better when they have begun to succeed, in the fall and the next coming spring - see?
63. (Q) Which would be the best factory, Sears or Carolina? (A) Carolina.
64. (Q) Is Mr. Hutchinson the best man for me to work with? (A) The best man to work with on this.
65. (Q) How will I be able to regain the General Motors business? (A) When there is a settlement of those conditions that have caused some of the turmoils, we will find the body will be able to gain the General Motors business.
66. (Q) Should I have any discussions now with James Newman
257-68 Page 8
about the business and [257]'s settlement? Advise what is to be said. (A) That an equitable basis might be reached, and that these may be carried on through an attorney who has given as to what is an equitable or an equal manner and way in which to settle.
67. (Q) Can I implicitly trust Peritz [Harry M. Peritz, office mgr. & bookkeeper] and the rest of my office associates? (A) Peritz is to be trusted in MOST every way and manner. To be sure, Peritz is a SPECIAL friend of [257]'s - yet there exists that in Peritz wherein his OWN interests are often thought of when it may be the detriment of [257], see? yet he may be trusted in most every way and manner.
68. (Q) How can I overcome that feeling in Peritz? (A) Well, the circumstances and the conditions have warranted it, as far as he is concerned - see? Then, there is the necessity that, there is seen that there IS an established, or a hold wherein that WERE the changes to come about for [257], they will necessarily fall on Peritz in the same way and manner. Then what will become of Peritz? That's Peritz's matter.
