Time of Reading 4:00 P. M. N.Y.C. (Continuation of questions submitted by Mr. [257] for A.M. reading, 254-76)
1. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [257], this we have had before - ready for questions.
2. (Q) Regarding Federal Wood Products Corp., 419 Lafayette St., N.Y.C. Should I continue to carry out Radio business plans, or spend time in other enterprises? (A) As self has expended time, and given much of self in developing and building up this department of the products company, is it fair to self to now LEAVE same? unless the proper efforts ARE made to USE to advantage that time expended? As self has come to be known as one as may counsel well with the many various fields of distribution of cabinets, in their various fields of the various cabinet users, then DO NOT throw the advantage away! Should there not be able to be made the proper understanding, proper relations, with those controlling in the affairs of the company, as to the correct or proper price relations, the proper time expended relations, then STILL do not lose advantage of that already gained! Carry it farther into other fields!
3. (Q) Is there any satisfactory future to Radio Cabinet business for me? (A) There's considerable, but it's got to be worked out! for the changes necessarily must come, as has been indicated oft; and as self has become somewhat of an authority, why ask others? Use that knowledge that you have in self!
4. (Q) Who would be best customers for 1932? (A) Many of those that have already been customers, provided that the proper relations or proper associations may be made for the products themselves. These, to be sure, are changing, or getting farther and farther away - but study THEIR needs, as the body has in the past so do in the future, and there will be seen the ways will be opened in these various fields; for there will be a change in the business outlook in this coming season.
5. (Q) Will I be able to sell General Motors this year at
257-77 Page 2
Dayton, Ohio? (A) That depends upon the ability of the body to make the proper connections or associations. There has been considerable change made in the policies of the purchasing and the constructive end of the General Motors, in this particular field; yet those in charge of same are still looking for the outlet necessary for the construction of cabinets that will be needed.
6. (Q) Should I try any further to sell R.C.A. at Camden, or will they ever be in market? (A) With their associations and connections, not until the latter portion of the coming year will they be in market for fill-ins.
7. (Q) Will Carolina Wood Products Corp. continue in business under present management? (A) That is still a question; as long as it may be made a PROFITABLE, GOING concern, it will continue. When there is a let-up in this showing profits, then it becomes a question - and a liability, and will not be carried very far.
8. (Q) Will I be able to sell Furniture for Carolina Wood Products Corp. of Asheville, N.C.? (A) Be able, if so desired. In this connection there are some relations with the corporation that should be straightened, before attempting to sell furniture or products of the corporation. These may be handled in a manner also satisfactory, as HAS been handled for other corporations, where specially built or specially prepared for those of special jobs, or the regular line with these conditions straightened would be very well for the body to consider.
9. (Q) Should I continue to seek lines for Federal Wood Products Corp. to sell? (A) As has been indicated in that given, it may become NECESSARY - unless there are some material changes in the corporation's attitude of the body's activities - to seek different lines, that may be handled through the Federal Products Corporation.
10. (Q) What proposition should I suggest at Chicago Title Trust Co. to Col. Hughes that would meet with their approval and be best for me? (A) That the conditions under which the body has already labored, in association with the corporation's, be held on the same basis as has been heretofore - or if these are to be changed, that there be sufficient of a commission that there be the profits from that as would be sold, that would make for a cost plus basis. This should be made satisfactory in the considerations of what HAS been
257-77 Page 3
accomplished, and what MAY be accomplished by the body in the future association with same.
11. (Q) When should I go to Chicago to discuss salary matter with Col. Hughes? (A) When there is the call for, or when there is the regular period of the meeting for the consultation on such matters, as well as the laying out of the work for the coming seasons.
12. (Q) Should I follow suggestion in Hughes' letter of Dec. 20th, in reference to reserve set-up? or how should this be handled? (A) This would be well, so long as it is in keeping with the suggestions that have been made as respecting the amounts or commissions allowed above the cost plus basis. If in this matter, or manner, same is set up - the reserve in this direction would be very well.
13. (Q) Should I take further business at Chicago market for Carolina Wood Products? (A) Provided the proper arrangements for the handling of same have been consummated beforehand; otherwise this may be necessary to be handled, as indicated, in other directions.
14. (Q) Is this the proper time to go back into Furniture business, for bedroom and dining room? (A) This will be a very good period to BEGIN; not to go in on a large scale, for there will be changes in the dining room - rather than the bedroom, though some PERIODS of furniture in the bedroom suites will be well to consider.
15. (Q) Will I sell bedroom and dining room furniture in 1932? (A) That depends upon the activities, for there are being many other propositions to consider. To say the one or the other, in the face of those that have been given as should be the activities of the body, and with the many interests in which the body is concerned, would be rather difficult. Indirectly the body will; directly, it would be rather at periods, or some special conditions may bring about the activity in this direction.
16. (Q) If I do sell it, where best to manufacture it? (A) Wherever there may be made the best connections or associations FOR the manufacture of the class, kind or character that is to be distributed or sold.
17. (Q) What other lines of manufacturing can I put into Carolina? (A) As we have found, and have oft given, one of the best lines as may be considered would be of special office furnishings.
18. (Q) Should I endeavor to sell U.S. Government bedroom and dining room furniture? (A) This may be very well taken, provided there are the
257-77 Page 4
proper connections and associations made with the quartermaster divisions in the various camp or encampments in the portions of the country where there are many changes, and will be many changes made in the coming year. This outlet would offer an especially GOOD outlet, for - as has been indicated - there will be many more changes in the quarters in this direction than there has been heretofore for a long period or season, and this will offer an opportunity for SOMEONE. Why not the body?
19. (Q) How should I proceed this time, since I was unsuccessful the last time in getting the order? (A) One who has been engaged in this department of the government should have little trouble in gaining access to the proper channels, for the handling of the business as is to go to most of the quartermaster departments (and most of the various distributing points come from same). Then go through this channel for same; one the body well itself acquainted in.
20. (Q) How long should I continue with Federal Wood Products Corp.? (A) Until there are better conditions, or better channels for the activities of the body.
21. (Q) What should I do to protect my contract with Federal? (A) What CAN be done under the existing circumstances! Let it go through its regular and proper channels!
22. (Q) What should I do next to further the collection of past due moneys from Federal and other companies against whom suits are pending? (A) Let those attempts and channels through which it is going be kept up, and what may be collected will be.
23. (Q) Will I recover moneys due me from Albert Pick and affiliates in 1932? (A) Depends upon what disposition is to be made, either in the reorganization or in the disposition of the assets of same. There are, as has been indicated by the activities, some channels through which at least portions of same may be collected. There are some that if, or provided these are carried on out, and there is no re-organization - or the re-organization is done in such a way and manner as they are eliminated entirely, that portion of same will be cut off.
24. (Q) How much will I recover of the $250,000 I claim due me? (A) That portion that will be followed in the lines as has just been indicated, in that asked.
25. (Q) If Col. Hughes wants to cut my salary, how can I prevent it? (A) In the way and manner as has been indicated.
26. (Q) Should I go before the Federal Judge at Chicago and
257-77 Page 5
defend myself, so my salary will not be cut? (A) That depends upon whether the circumstances justify it, or the representatives of the body may present it even better than the body itself - or the body itself, dependent upon the character and the way in which same IS approached, from Hughes.
27. (Q) How much business will I be able to do in Radio in 1932 to justify my salary and drawing account? (A) That depends upon the basis upon which the product or the manufacturing end of same is to be considered. If it is held in the same abeyance as it has been heretofore, then about a fifty to sixty percent of that done in '29, and about a seventy-five to ninety percent of that in '31, may be '32, provided the same is put on the right basis for the price and the product, and the way of delivery. These things MUST be taken into consideration when the claims are made, either by self or by those that are presenting THEIR claim of the inability for the body to produce. See?
28. (Q) What stocks would be safe for me to buy in January to aid Cayce and myself to carry on? (A) We wouldn't buy stocks in January!
29. (Q) Is Briggs Mfg. Co. of Detroit a good stock to buy? (A) After it's re-financed or readjustments of the things, it may be a very good stock.
30. (Q) Is there a pool operating in this stock? If so, who is it? (A) That's THEIR business! There is one! That's why the readjustment's necessary!
31. (Q) What is best manner and means to bring Zerozone Refrigerator Co., Chicago, and Briggs Mfg. Co. of Detroit, into a working arrangement for best interest of both concerns? (A) We would not bring or consider bringing together until there was a re-adjustment, or a re-financing adjustment in the Briggs Company.
32. (Q) What will be best outlets for the product of this concern or association? (A) Wait until it's formed first, before we get to sell what it's going to produce!
33. (Q) Where is largest field Commercial or Domestic for 1932? (A) In the southwest, and in the northwest. Don't go too far west, or don't go too far south in either one of these directions.
34. (Q) Is my agreement with Briggs Mfg. Co. satisfactory and legally correct? (A) Legally correct.
35. (Q) Should I visit Briggs Mfg. Co. in reference to Westinghouse contract next week?
257-77 Page 6
(A) Be very well. Don't push too much, or make too many demands though, in the visit. See rather as to WHAT is being done WITH the proposition as has been set - see?
36. (Q) What can I do to insure a delivery of all boxes to Westinghouse? (A) See that the things that have been promised are carried through.
37. (Q) What should I say to Briggs on this visit? (A) More as a social, and more as the indications of the interest and in keeping the things together.
38. (Q) Will additional orders be placed by Westinghouse? (A) Provided these come up to the agreement and specifications, as has been outlined.
39. (Q) How can plane as now set up by associate Lauterstein for Zerozone reorganization in Chicago be improved upon? (A) Carry it on out as has been set up, with the proper associations and connections as being set up, and as necessary for the various changes these will present them- selves - and may be met at the various stages of the development.
40. (Q) What date final reorganization takes place? (A) This is too far ahead to give dates, names or places, or hours or minutes - but keep on working on it. This has been outlined as to how it will be made, or when it will be made.
41. (Q) What will be best system for merchandizing Zerozone products, through jobbers, direct sales, or self owned branches, or private brands for department stores? (A) This has been given before!
42. (Q) Can private brands be sold Department Stores successfully in same towns where regular jobbers are located? (A) CAN be done, but it's rather ticklish business - and must lead to contention, sooner or later! This may be done where considerations are given for large department stores, that come in various sections, which will make some change sufficient to JUSTIFY the activities OF the concern in making such large production - see?
43. (Q) From what source should additional capital be sought for Zerozone Co? (A) In the northeast. Springfield, Salem, or Boston.
44. (Q) Should I proceed to interest How Scale Co. in the distribution of Zerozone? (A) One very good channel; not very likely to get very far, unless there's some changes. If there are some changes in one or two of the people who have been blocking or balking in the game, and these become either vitally interested or eliminated, then it may be a very good change.
257-77 Page 7
45. (Q) How can I sell the U.S. Government? when best time to proceed? (A) As the various departments, as may be found from the supply department through this same where the other channels may be reached. When there are various changes being made in the various ports, in the various ships, whether commercial, war ships or what not, these may offer a very good channel - but these will be FOUND BEST to be worked THROUGH some of the departments, or department stores that are closer to some of the department heads.
46. (Q) Which ones? (A) These will be found when you attempt to locate 'em!
47. (Q) Will Briggs deliver the full amount of 37,400 boxes to Westinghouse on time? (A) That depends upon the conditions as have been outlined. The order itself may assist in the re-financing, or the re-organization, sufficiently to carry out the contracts - see? Hence, as has been given, in the visit, do not usurp authority - do not present that there must be; rather as that the cooperation is necessary for the carrying out of this, to meet the needs or demands of each and everyone as concerned in the undertaking. In this manner may it be handled, may the facilitations of the organization and of the delivery be insured.
48. (Q) Will I be paid in full amount of my present contract with Briggs? (A) That's provided, if these are carried out in the way and manner as has already been stipulated.
49. (Q) Where else can I get refrigeration business for factory I represent? (A) This should be sufficient for the time being, if all of these are carried out - both the government and those supplying to the other various departments - who would seek to have their own names.
50. (Q) What are the prospects for business during January, February and March of 1932, in my lines? (A) In various sections these will be different. The better part of the first portion of the first month had best be taken up in getting the propositions in shape so business will be able to be received a little bit later; also in first portions of the year will be found rather slow, but opening a little bit later in February and March.
51. (Q) Advise me what to guard against, that my plans will be successful? (A) Keep self straight; keep the understandings; keep in the way as self KNOWS best to go. Don't talk TOO much, but don't keep too quiet!
257-77 Page 8
52. (Q) Paris Medicine Co., St. Louis, Mo. What are the proper moves for me to now make in N.Y. to get a definite proposition to offer Isaac Orr and Edwin Grove? (A) Open up through the same channels in which it has been handled heretofore, in the way and manner as has been outlined, that it should be through those channels with which contracts have been made, have been held. Open up through these, would be the proper ways and manners.
53. (Q) Should I see E. F. Hutton personally at once, or go with Gen. McRoberts to see him? (A) Go with Gen. McRoberts.
54. (Q) Should I go again to Maurice Wertheim or better handle thru Gen. McRoberts? (A) Through Gen. McRoberts.
55. (Q) Would Atlas Corporation be interested in a proposition of this kind? (A) Not in the present. May be interested with ANOTHER, but that would be later.
56. (Q) How can I offer a new proposition to Paris Medicine Co. without jeopardizing my first contract and claim with them? (A) As has been outlined, as there is the proposition being made to the body for the opening up of the proposition, an equitable basis to hold or keep the same proportions in the various settlements that might be made, in the various - and under the various - circumstances, will hold good in the same way and manner.
57. (Q) Should I use my new attorney, Riegelman, or proceed thru Ike Lande? (A) The attorney, or the better portion or bulk, would be through Lande - as the whole proposition has been handled; though consultation may be had at times with Riegelman.
58. (Q) Should Drug, Inc., be visited by me to see what deal they would offer? or better just keep to Zonite as originally laid out? (A) Drug, Inc., may be consulted - but this had best be made through the same channels that the Zonite proposition has been handled.
59. (Q) Who is best person in St. Louis to work with at this time? (A) Orr.
60. (Q) When will the market be in condition or position to absorb a new offering for purpose of purchasing Paris Medicine Co.? (A) In March or April.
61. (Q) What contract should I make this time with Mr. Orr for the compensation for the sale? (A) In line with that as has been made and held before.
257-77 Page 9
62. (Q) Should Ellery Mann be consulted at all in the new proposition, or deal at once with Hutton? (A) Let this be handled preferably through McRoberts, as to whether this should be consulted or not!
63. (Q) What is best date for me to plan to go to St. Louis, to find everyone in proper accord to meet me on friendly and satisfactory basis? (A) Best to make the proposition from the other end first, as it has been opened first from the St. Louis interest - then when this is satisfactory, or arrangements may be made where there may be proper considerations, or a proper understanding, this may come in a period within those dates as outlined for the body as to being the best dates for same.
64. (Q) What will be satisfactory price to new purchasers? (A) This is to be considered rather from the general conditions, the variation in the distributions, the variations in money market, in the stocks - all these would be taken into consideration, on the basis in which they stand in the present.
65. (Q) Will all cash be required for the purchase? (A) If so, it wouldn't be purchased!
66. (Q) How can Paris Medicine Co. be further developed to make earnings larger and volume greater, in order to make purchase more attractive? (A) This has been gone over and given before. Follow that. This CHARACTER of presentation of such products, as from Paris Medicine Co., may be considered - or be COMBINED later, should these not be considered - those of the Pure Food products may be considered with these, which has NOT been considered. In that case, or in that manner, all moneys might be paid at once. We are through for the present. Copy to Self " " File " " Ass'n
