Time of Reading 3:45 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will have before you the body & enquiring mind of [257], who is at home, ..., New York City, who seeks guidance, further direction and aid in his new beginning. You will advise him now as to his development since making his decision to sever old associations, and will answer the questions which he has submitted concerning the several things he is attempting to work out in his mental and material affairs.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [257] - this we have had before.

3. In the physical conditions of the body, it would be well to heed those warnings that have been given the body, respecting the allowing of cold and congestion to so affect the body, as to bring about detrimental conditions in the system to such an extent that the taxations bring mental unfitness, and worriments in a way and manner that the physical and mental will not, under such strains, coordinate or cooperate in bringing about the proper relations of associated ideas, or enabling the body to give the proper mental valuations to associations or conditions. Does the body allow self to become too panicky in its deliberations, or allow wrath or those conditions that bring about these congested conditions in system that will make for madness, then assimilations and deteriorations would soon begin in the mental and physical forces.

4. We would use the character of inhalant as has been given, taking a good hot bath one or two evenings - following with small quantities, half a teaspoonful every thirty minutes, of Castoria, until a whole bottle has been taken and the eliminations are open. REST would be well through these, and we will find this will make a different outlook on the whole of the affairs that are indicated as worriments for the body in the present times and situations.

5. As is indicated, there are several propositions and characters of associations that need some attention, and one should not be neglected for the other, unless due

257-80 Page 2

consideration is given as respecting the associations and relations as would be, or could be, brought about by those changes; for, as has been given, those associations first, as we would find, that would be well, would be those of Gains - Saginaw, Chicago, and that association would bring about that which would enable the body in the very near future to make those connections that would enable the body to use many of the channels of outlets for the activities, in the furniture, the radio and other activities.

6. Also there is seen that due consideration should be made as respecting those of the chemical propositions that have been presented, but that any small quantity might save is only sending bad money, or good money for bad, unless there is a change in the manner in which those relationships are to be considered.

7. As for the developments or determinations that have been set, these are rather in the present as ideas. While they are very good ideas, as to whether these are to be builded into that within the system that is going to make for a continued regret or a continued harking back to that dependence that has made for decisions in many respects, or whether these are going to be made as stepping-stones and forgotten save as they may be useful in the further development in the material and financial associations of the body, this is to be seen.

8. Ready for questions.

9. (Q) What will be next important move for me in business associations, that will again clarify my mind and put my energies in proper direction? (A) Just been given!

10. (Q) In manufacturing Radio cabinets and other wood, which will be best for me, Mr. Carroll of Bald Knob factory in Rocky Mount, Va., or Carolina Wood Products Corp. at Asheville, or Saginaw-Gaines association using Asheville, or Gaines using Saginaw plant? Considering my past experience and present associations, which will be best plan for me to work out? (A) This makes rather confusing conditions in the mind of the body, as well as in the manner in which the question has been asked. First it has been given that would be better for the body were it to become satisfied or settled in its own mind as to what is to be the future operations. To make the associations with Gaines, as we find same! Whether this leads to the Rocky Mount or to the Carolina Wood Products depends upon the abilities of that association to make the proper connections, or the proper agreements and relations with those who hold the exercising of the authority as

257-80 Page 3

concerning the manufacture or the output from the various plants! See? This SHOULD clarify it! Now, once set - then these other conditions may be worked out! While they will appear at first to make more and more confusion, but are those associations so set with the Saginaw and Chicago connections, that it allows the body to exercise its abilities in making the connections where the distribution of the products can be worked on, rather than the financing of the propositions, then these will be the better manners in which to work these out - see? The body should associate self first, then, with that connection which will enable the body to put its efforts, put its labors, in the direction of obtaining, delivering, selling and delivering, and making those connections where those of the furniture AND the wood products will be the part OF the entity's work, while the financing of, the placing of the orders in this or that, or the other factory, will be the portion or part of the others' job, save as the BODY takes hold of same in its activity!

11. (Q) Would Asheville bank thru Mr. Seely [Seeley] aid me in financing orders? (A) This is still some confusion. It depends upon HOW the body intends to work its operations. Are there to be those connections made that are to handle this portion of the work, then this is is not necessary. Is the body going to handle the propositions from the various factories, or various plants - as of the Federal Wood, by placing orders with same for distribution through someone else, or for self, or independent - then these would be one way and manner to handle SUCH conditions. By first obtaining the orders as would be - Please understand, this is not saying the way to do it! The body should determine in self how IT'S going to work, see? how it's going to work these out, see? The body should make up its own mind what it's going to do! If the orders are obtained, and they are okayed, and the rating of those who have ordered same are such that the amount of profit as would be shown in such an order would justify such to be carried or handled through bank, then this character MAY be handled in such a way and manner. As WE would find, would be better that the associations of the body be such as that this portion or part of such work is handled by SOMEONE ELSE RATHER than the body ITSELF!

12. (Q) Will I enjoy the respect of the Radio and furniture world if I join Gaines as a partner and associate? (A) Are the conditions, the associations, set in such a way and manner as is satisfactory to the body itself; that is, whether by so much allowance for expenses and on an

257-80 Page 4

equitable commission basis, or so much salary and so much commission, and so much for expenses, so that these are in an equitable way and manner for the services to be expended, and this is satisfactory in the MIND of the body itself, then it can be builded to that point where there will be the respect - so that the body builds same. It enjoys the respect, in a way and manner, in the present. To be sure, there are those that feel that the efforts of the body are beyond that of the character of associations as has been held heretofore. There are those who feel that the change would not be altogether satisfactory, as THEY would see - but these are a matter of personal aptitude toward the trade in the various directions themselves. Hence are a matter of being BUILDED by the body, provided first the connections and associations JUSTIFY the body in doing so.

13. (Q) Please suggest a trade name to carry my activities properly to public? (A) That that would carry much in the manner of the character of service as may be offered by the body, in the way and manner it desires to present same to the public. As would be of the special character of SERVICE as well as the characters of work as would be carried out.

14. (Q) Am I right bringing action in Supreme Court to prevent Chicago from recalling suit against the Sterling Stores & Albert Pick Co? (A) Correct.

15. (Q) Considering the reorganization of Albert Pick, receiverships of Sterling, the Manufacturers Trust interest, will I be able to recover part of my claim by continuing suit? (A) As we find, it should be. It would be to stop it, if for nothing else!

16. (Q) How can I force the old organizations to replace the moneys they unlawfully took from my company, Federal Wood Products Corp? (A) Carrying on through and in the way and manner as has been started.

17. (Q) Thru whom could I get evidence that would cause the finance company owned by bankers to return accounts they took from Sterling? (A) This is necessary, that it come through the right or the proper channels as is set in such things.

18. (Q) Would I be in better position to sell Kolster and Stewart-Warner if I have my factory in the south for Radio cabinets, or with Gaines in Saginaw, Michigan? (A) Not necessarily, that the factory in South would give better service, unless the associations with same are such that the characters of the product are made, or are capable

257-80 Page 5

of being made, better than under the other association or connection, and - as we find - as the way it is set, they are not! That is, the southern factories are not able to produce a better quality at less prices!

19. (Q) Would I be better off to put my Radio cabinet business with a factory that makes bedroom and dining room furniture? (A) Not as we find. Not wholly as that.

20. (Q) Where would I best begin to build bedroom and dining room furniture for my contract connections, such as department stores - and when? (A) Either, as we find, in Marion or Rocky Mount, Va., or in Rocky Mount, N.C., or in High Point.

21. (Q) Would it mean success for me in 1932, in Radio, under Federal name? (A) It may be worked to that. Not without a lot of work, to be sure.

22. (Q) Will I be able to get business from Radio City on basis of letter from Norman Alerdyce of Pittsburgh, which letter is in my wallet? (A) To some extent, sure - it makes an opening for same, but the better returns on same will be in the latter part of the season, rather than in the middle of the year.

23. (Q) How should I proceed? (A) Proceed in the way he outlined for it! that is, first there must be set in the mind of the body itself, that it has the proper connections, the proper associations, for not only the handling of WHATEVER size or type order that might be presented, but with proper financial backing to deliver same to those that are ordering same; for if the body has not sold self, or does not wholeheartedly believe in that it is attempting to sell, but is fearful - as the associations have so oft been with some, as in the Chemical, and as some where there have been some of the bedroom suites heretofore that were not up to standard, or that there will be the attempt on the part of the one receiving order to cut something off here and there to make it meet the demands as is necessary for the price as has been made, and there are troubles produced by such; rather had the association be such that the service or value as is given is SUPER, than BELOW par! When the body can enjoy this feeling first, and unless it can DON'T MAKE THE ASSOCIATION! but, as we find, it can be made with Gaines, as has been given.

24. (Q) In reference to my office, please advise me what to advise my secretary as to her future, so she will be prepared? [Miss [349]] (A) That would depend entirely upon what the body finds it is able to do, in making its connection with or for the

257-80 Page 6

handling of the various lines, or connections with the various lines. Are these to be in the way of independent activities, then this would be a different story. Are these to be in association or partnership, or cooperative activities, then a different condition there. Are these to be partially this, that or the other, another story. THIS must be from SELF'S own action, NOT as may be given from here, until a determination is made!

25. (Q) Will Mrs. [189] be repaid for staying with me? (A) That depends upon what the body is going to do with self!

26. (Q) How can she help at present? (A) Depends on what the body is going to do! Some DECISIONS, as is seen, MUST be made by the body itself! There is the consideration of many various WAYS of doing, see? Which of these is the body to choose? As has been given, these may be worked in many different ways - but that as WE have given, as we see, would be best, would be the association or connection with GAINES! If this is untenable to the body, then make the best it can!

27. (Q) What do I need to complete the organization to accomplish what the Forces and myself deem my goal in life? (A) Get up and git!

28. (Q) Have I the ability and opportunity to now build my desires for family and associates? (A) It has!

29. (Q) And be successful in 1932 and 1933 as I was in 1929? (A) To be as successful in 1932 and 1933 as in '29 would be impossible, unless there was about nineteen like self put under the same stress or strain in activity in various parts of the country, for the business will NOT be seen!

30. (Q) What are my best months and days for 1932? (A) As we find, May, June, September and October.

31. (Q) Do I err when engaging my mind in several activities at this time, such as chemicals, wood working, metal working? (A) This has been answered. The situations or conditions as exist NECESSITATE many of these being considered, for the fingers or hands - and in many places the whole feet and whole body - are already in same, and are being burned! Proper consideration must be given, but DO NOT give one consideration at the EXPENSE of that that is set as the GOAL! Do not depend upon those that have PROVEN false, or faithless in their actions, to carry on that that is to be handled by self, but get these set in their proper relationships one to another, as to how much time and how much definite time may be given to one of the other by the

257-80 Page 7

body! NOT haphazard! Give ROUTINE! THAT is what is LACKING, and is failure in the body in carrying ON in the manner as it has! The bigness of an individual is shown in its ability to leave each in their respective SPHERE and place at the proper time and place, and do not mix these but GIVE their relationships, their valuations, as to what they are, and what they represent in the activities of the body, in their proper relationships one to another! Those that are not proving profitable, rid self of them!

32. (Q) Advise me what I can do to help in the Lindbergh case at this time? (A) Nothing. [See [4191] series.]

33. (Q) What kind of proposition will be acceptable to Dan Lipsky, with whom I had a meeting today at 1:00 o'clock in my office? (A) This we don't get.

34. (Q) What does Lipsky have in mind for me? (A) This we don't get. Apparently is something outside of the ken of that we have had heretofore.

35. (Q) Is this the right time for me to visit Harvey Gibson of Mfg. Trust? (A) Soon after the 1st, yes. About the 5th or 6th of April.

36. (Q) PARIS MEDICINE: Please advise me what now to say to the General to urge him to further action on Paris Medicine deal? (A) As we would find, there has been - of late - considerable consideration in the mind of McRoberts as respecting this deal, and it would be well first - as the approach - that as the conditions are, as the needs are of the product and of its receiving its proper place in the conditions of the country in the present, that it would be well for the negotiations to be opened again as to how considerations might be received. This would be as the opening of same, see? Then, as we would find, then - FRANKLY give the needs and the necessities for this being opened for the self at the present time, and - as we find - we may expect that some action may be taken in it from that standpoint - see?

37. (Q) Will his man in Canada, known as Carload Ritchie, who is the head of International Proprietary Med. Corp., be interested in going into the Paris Medicine Co., and buying it at present time? (A) Would be interested. There would be others considered, and there are foreign associations. Would require time, but would be worth considering - and be well to be used to be worked against some other associations with which the

257-80 Page 8

General has had connections.

38. (Q) Is there anyone I should approach now to aid in this development? (A) Go first through these associations and connections.

39. (Q) What will be the new price that Gen. McRoberts can get for the business now? (A) How much is to be asked? These, then, may be gotten together. This will be, as has been seen or given, about seven times - or ten times - that of the income over and above that of the outgo; that is, that ratio, see?

40. (Q) What commission arrangement has Gen. McRoberts in his mind now for his part in new sale? (A) Find out from him, that would be the better way! He is ready to make concessions, considerable!

41. (Q) What will be my part of commission? (A) Be sufficient. Same ratio as has been existent.

42. (Q) What sales arguments can I use to interest new parties to buy the business? (A) That as just outlined, the necessity or the needs of the products and the greater distribution at and under the present conditions as exist in many portions of the world. A greater and bigger, and a broader international distribution may be made.

43. (Q) How much money was earned by Paris Medicine Co. in year 1931? (A) This the statement would show. A falling off of about 22% from that of some former years.

44. (Q) REGARDING GAINES: What basis will be satisfactory and safe for me and yet give associate fair play? (A) As has been outlined, this may be worked out on more than one type of basis, but this may be worked out in a satisfactory way and manner - see? There should be the considerations that these are to be worked on an equal, or equitable basis, in that what is expended by self (by [257]) in certain directions - that is, in the distribution of or the sale - is to be classed with or against certain efforts (and be sure that the body is able to full these) on the part of the other, see? so that these work on an equitable basis. These may be made so commission only, and expenses paid by self? or so much drawing account against so much that's put out, see? and on a commission AND a salary basis.

45. (Q) REGARDING PITTSBURGH CHEMICAL CORP: What mistakes have been made by me thus far in the company's affairs? (A) Trusting too much to too little to run on! In the affairs of the Pittsburgh Chemical, as has been given, MUCH has been given that had this been adhered to much closer,

257-80 Page 9

the position and the condition of self - as well as others in relationship to same - would be in a much better position and condition! As is seen, there is NEEDS that there be a total dis-engaging self from some entanglements as have been made as respecting some patents, as respecting some associations of those who have promised things that are not owned by - and have never been paid for by - the Pittsburgh Chemical, but are held against the body - as being those entanglements that were made! In this has the body erred. Is there sufficient of capital (which, as we find would require from twenty-five to thirty thousand dollars) to RELEASE much of these conditions, put the firm or the operations on a firm basis, much can be made out of this - and only a very small portion of the body's time given to it.

46. (Q) Would it be best if I give up the whole project and turn over to associates, or carry on? (A) Unless there can be such an arrangement, that there are better connections for the body, I'd give it up entirely!

47. (Q) If present plans on Chemical re-financing fail, what should I do now to save the company? (A) Present financing may not fail, but it had best fail unless these arrangements, or many of those associations, or many of those things as mentioned can be perfectly straightened out - best that they DO fail! In this connection there may be some other combines that may be able to be put with same in aiding in the financing, see? Other chemical company that makes some of the same sort, or those that make things entirely different.

48. (Q) Would a combine with the Henley Chemical Co. of 342 Madison Ave. be successful for both firms? (A) Be successful for both firms, provided BOTH are re-financed in a manner that loses, or looses, all of these contentions that have hindered both from making the success each deserves to.

49. (Q) What sort of proposition would be fair to A. E. Henley & Pittsburgh Chem. Corp. for Monday meeting? (A) Both would be - Both should be CLEARED first, by whoever would be the financing one for same - see? Then these may both be put on a basis where these will both be paying propositions.

50. We are through for the present. Copy to Self (2 copies - 1 to office, 1 to home) " " Cayce file " " Ass'n file
