Co., for boxes in apt. houses owned by them, thru whom and how they should be approached. Ques. on business affairs)
1. EC: We have the organization, those individuals composing same; this we have had before.
2. In the approach to those that control the purchasing of boxes or equipment for the various apartments owned by the Metropolitan Life Insurance, as we find, these channels have already been opened up.
3. There is the questions as to the worth of the box, and as to price, considering that (as understood by those who have charge of the purchasing) it is not a standard box or equipment.
4. But, with or through this channel there may be made those arrangements whereby these may be given the opportunity of showing their value; and, considering the service and the like, within the next twelve months, through these channels there should be placed the boxes; or, in the next four months, at least place two thousand or more boxes.
5. Carry on, then, through these same channels that have already been opened for the associations and connections.
6. (Q) How many boxes will they buy in the period of 12 months? (A) Between eight and nine thousand.
7. (Q) Who is the better man to work with, Mr. Merritt, Mr. Downey, or Mr. Duffy? (A) Those that have the closer association. As we find, Merritt is the better.
8. (Q) Should I handle the proposition or better go thru Murphy to O'Brien & Duffy, and then to Downey? (A) As we find, it is better to go through those same channels that have been opened, but the questions are such - as indicated - that it will be well for this to be handled by [257] himself.

9. (Q) What idea or plan would assist me to interest a higher executive to give exclusive business to me? (A) This may be obtained only through those - channels through which such is carried on, and - as indicated must be rather along the policies that have been and are the organization's, rather than making any special inducement that would make for a rebound later. That the merchandise must stand the tests is the CRITERION through which you should operate.
10. (Q) What important Board member could help me get the business? (A) Go through those channels that have been indicated.
11. (Q) Who has the final say? (A) The regular channels, that has been given.
12. (Q) Can Murphy contribute to this purchase? If so, how? (A) All of those in this same chain of circumstances through which the approach is made can, and will, contribute or deter from activity.
13. (Q) How soon will order be placed? (A) According to how soon there may be the decisions as to the real worth or value of that presented.
14. (Q) Reference Montgomery Ward, what is the latest development - that would enable me to get the business? (A) As we find, there has already been placed sufficient of that to verify that which has been given respecting this connection. Carry it on through those same channels that are being handled by Weisburgh in this circumstance.
15. (Q) How does Perkins feel now to me and business? (A) As indicated, there has been the placing of sufficient to show as to what is to be the real outcome, when these have been tried out in their various channels.
16. (Q) When will he go to factory at Detroit? (A) Already arrangements have been made about this.
17. (Q) Will Walter Hoving's influence help us, since requested by Hirschmann? (A) It's already shown it's influence!
18. (Q) Is there anything further to do at present with Ryan? (A) Carry on in those same ways that have been set in motion, for the activities in relation to this connection or association.
19. (Q) What price will be necessary to satisfy Perkins - on the Unit - on the Box? (A) This has already been arranged, as indicated.
20. (Q) Will he finally buy up top or bottom mounted unit? (A) The final decision depends upon how well these stand up, in the usage or distribution of same.
21. (Q) Have I laid out the work as advised by the Forces, to carry business to success?

(A) It's been much better laid out, and there is not as much lapping over, or each getting in the other's way, in the various associations, connections, and the various channels each are working out. It's much better!
22. (Q) Is there anyone who should change plan? (A) We wouldn't advise a change in the immediate future. This depends upon developments. As we have given, when there isn't the returns through the various channels laid out, then it would be well that there be the advising of the changes necessary to meet the situations and conditions.
23. (Q) Should we make any changes in the office arrangement or assistants? (A) Not as we find in the present.
24. (Q) What is best plan for Jos. Gerl to follow for next two weeks; give details as to the work and its accomplishment. (A) There has already been laid out the plans by Gerl for even more than two weeks, in carrying out or following up rather the various contacts that have been made; and as the season is progressing, the time for the carrying out of these, they should be pushed ahead, to that place where there is fruition from the efforts on the part of various individuals who have made the contacts, or who are making those contacts in a manner for the receiving of, and distribution of, the products.
25. (Q) Is Philip Marcus handling his division in the complete and most advantageous manner? (A) This is very good. There are some little hecklings over some minor details. While it is necessary that all be kept in their regular order and channel, heckling over minor details oftentimes makes for confusions that hinder when there are much more VITAL points to be decided. These are very good, however.
26. (Q) What plans best for [bro.-in-law [1565]] for next week at Chicago? (A) Carry on those very things that are to be closed during those periods.
27. (Q) How does Julius Kahn (at Youngstown, O.) feel now since our last meeting at Detroit? (A) Little more optimistic, though not wholly satisfied as yet that there will be - or is - sufficient activity or orders coming in.
28. (Q) Please advise as to [sister-in-law [2126]'s] work in the office. How can she improve it, and what is condition as now existing? (A) This is gradually straightening itself out. There have been some questions as to who, where, what and when the various activities of the body should be followed out. As

we have outlined from the beginning, these should be set that there is so much expected of each in the various activities of aiding others in carrying out their activities, and these will be much more satisfactory. BUDGET the time, not overlapping so much. Not waiting or depending on one or the other, but each - from [257] on down (and this means [257] as much as the rest of them) - keep in that order wherein so much time is given to so much activity, and carry it out! [GD's note: I think there was friction between his sec'ty Miss [349] and his sister-in-law Miss [2126]].
29. (Q) Which department store in N.Y. best to sell, to use the most boxes? (A) Why give one individual more than the other? We would follow along with all of these that have been, where negotiations have been opened. These will make for the better channels.
30. (Q) Reference Paris Medicine, I arranged 60/40 first $250,000, and 50/50 above, with all expenses paid by lawyers, and protection to Seely on Estate losses. Is there anything else to aid? (A) This should be satisfactory to all.
31. (Q) Should I arrange to have Seely meet Hirschmann, so Lord & Taylor will handle homespun cloth? (A) Be very good association and connection.
32. (Q) When should Seely come to N.Y.? (A) When it is the most convenient season for both concerned.
33. (Q) Advise Seely what he should say to members of Paris Medicine Co. in justification for my insistence to get paid? (A) This should be left to the body itself, from the attitude he has assumed and taken; rather than being insistent from anyone else. He knows better how to act and carry on for himself.
34. (Q) How will Seely be able to aid me in this suit against Grove and his estate? (A) Considering all the conditions and circumstances that have existed between those officers of the company and Seely, how else will it be other than in a passive way, or in the sub-active way, as regarding the activities that are to come about?
35. (Q) How long will it take Oestreicher to get a decision or settlement? (A) That depends a great deal upon the attitudes assumed by those to whom is being given the disorder or disruption. These have been gone over sufficient for it to be seen just what may be the attitudes. Depends upon what the mind of an

individual or a group will do, and who knows!
36. (Q) Considering St. Louis attitude, what may be expected from Grove and the bank in settling the matter? (A) Most anything!
37. (Q) Any other advice? (A) That which has been given, both as to associations in the various connections and activities of individuals concerned with the organization and its activities. Follow the policy of SERVICE in its whole entirety, and the activities will be the better and the more satisfactory.
