Time of Reading 11:15 to 12:05 A. M. Eastern Standard Time New York City. (Bodies & enquiring minds of [257] & [1565], in ass'n with [257] Corp., & their other activities, upon which you will advise them & direct them where to put their immediate efforts for profitable returns. Questions.)
1. EC: Yes, we have the bodies, the enquiring minds, [257] and [1565], present in this room, with their associations and relations.
2. In considering the efforts at the present time, there are those connections that have been made that will bring - for the effort expended - the greater returns in those activities related to associations in the endeavors and fields of activity in relationships with groups, rather than individuals or corporations.
3. Hence these, then, will mean the better or greater responsibilities in the present.
4. In those connections where there have been those as related to the supplying of the activities necessary for supplying the needs of such groups will be the better channel, then, for activities.
5. Ready for questions.
6. (Q) What advantages will be had from [1565] going to Chicago market? (A) The associations and connections that are established in such meetings, and such relations, keep those contacts - as well as broadening the fields of activity; and would then, through such, make worth while considerations.
7. (Q) What can he do to insure a large volume of business for refrigeration? (A) In those same fields of activity wherein the connections have been made, and are being made, these will be the manners in which the greater volume may be obtained.
8. (Q) What especial groups? (A) Those that are in the market for those special classes, or special character of refrigeration, offer the greatest
257-112 Page 2
opportunities in the present. Where there are specific characters or kinds of equipment to be prepared or built.
9. (Q) Commercial or domestic? (A) Commercial, to be sure.
10. (Q) Are we using the right selling methods in promoting the sale of the refrigerator bar, pictures of which I hold in my hand? (A) Using the correct methods, as we find. These would insure the success.
11. (Q) Will the public buy these electric refrigerator bars? (A) If they are to be a success, it will necessitate the public buying them! We have just given that they would be a success!
12. (Q) What improvements, if any, should we make in these bars from the standpoint of manufacturing and design? (A) These will come only with that as necessity demands, or as the use of same is expended. The design and the manufacture, under the present conditions (or that for which they are being presented), will fill the necessary fields of work.
13. (Q) Can we expect much business during the Furniture market, which opens in Chicago June 27th? (A) Sufficient to justify the approach to this active field; for, as demonstrated, there is more and more entrance into this field of activity by those interested in the Furniture market also.
14. (Q) When should [257] go to Chicago for the market? (A) By Wednesday or Thursday - this week.
15. (Q) Could he possibly wait, without injury to the business, until after the 4th of July? (A) Possible, but there will be some conditions arising wherein it will naturally delay some of the conditions - but not a great deal of damage, provided these are handled in the proper way and manner.
16. (Q) What should be our best line of attack to receive new business during the Furniture market? (A) The natural line; not following the least resistance entirely, but the necessary fields of activity for those that are interested in the Furniture market. That is, as this: There is, as given, more and more turning to this line of activity in the larger distributing furniture factories, or furniture distributing points. And in the approach to these, from the character of that which may be presented (or the product itself), there will be offered the greater scope, greater field of activity.
257-112 Page 3
17. (Q) How soon will Hinckley Schmidt of Chicago place an order with us for electric water coolers? (A) First weeks of July.
18. (Q) Has everything been done by [1565] to receive Hinckley Schmidt's order? (A) As we find, unless some other influences enter in, it has been determined in the proper fields or activities to place the order with [1565].
19. (Q) Can we expect to open us a number of new accounts for electric refrigerators during the next three months, so we can increase production? (A) As we find, they may expect to open sufficient new accounts to increase production by at least two-thirds more than is required in the present.
20. (Q) Should [1565] make arrangements at the Furniture market next week in Chicago to represent several Furniture factory lines during this fall and winter? (A) This would be well.
21. (Q) What particular lines? (A) Those that are for a general commercial line, and for special period furniture.
22. (Q) Even tho the Western Auto Supply Co. of Kansas City, Mo., say they are not ready to take on a line of electric refrigerators, is it advisable to send [1565] there now to try to get this account? (A) It would be plausible, and a very feasible thing. Though it may be opened not in the immediate future, this would insure that the account would be opened through these channels when their order is placed.
23. (Q) When best for him to go to Kansas City? (A) By the middle of July.
24. (Q) Can we expect an order for refrigerators from Gamble Skogmo Co. of Minneapolis in the immediate future? (A) Small order, yes; not the large order that is contemplated, but some business.
25. (Q) Why won't I get the large order? (A) This has, in a manner, been promised in other directions.
26. (Q) Is there anything we can do to change it into our channels? (A) Not in the immediate future, as we find, but the service and the manner of handling the first trial order would be the manner in which to open the way for the larger business in this present season.
27. (Q) What would be a good trade name for the new Secretary Bar Refrigerator? (A) That which has already been intimated or set out, as we find, would be as well as any - or in line with that to be
257-112 Page 4
accomplished.
28. (Q) Is the name Secretary Bar the name we should use? (A) This - as chosen, the Secretary Bar - as we find - would be well.
29. (Q) What cities will find most ready sale for it? (A) As we find, through the middle and northwest (this doesn't mean the far northwest, but), as through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota - these would be the greater field.
30. (Q) Any special field for it in Washington, D.C? (A) Special field for it, but it would be more in line with the activities in these particular portions of the country as given.
31. (Q) What should [1565] and [257] do to insure getting order for 500 water coolers mentioned Saturday by Lewis at Washington? (A) As we find, all of this has been set in motion - and, while they shouldn't rest entirely on that, as we find, as the plans are at present, it is a foregone conclusion that it will go through.
32. (Q) Shall we depend on Lewis to handle the actual getting of order? (A) The actual getting of the order will come through Lewis; for, as indicated by the activities and conversation of [257], it is necessary that Lewis do something to show his abilities in this direction - and every effort is being expended. Just, as it were, keep onto Lewis' coattail about it!
33. (Q) Any other departments that can be sold in Washington on same basis, outside of Lewis connections? (A) As we find, this should open up some other fields of connections; not in the next week, but in the next four weeks it may open other fields in these same connections - that is, the same line as carried through, see?
34. (Q) Advise [257] as to the handling of an organization with the Abe Adelson to build kitchen equipment for new construction jobs. He was with [257] yesterday in Room 407 of the Willard Hotel in Washington. (A) As we find, this - while it is a possibility, and may be worked out - is rather an extremity, as it were, with Adelson at this time. This would require, then, a good deal of consideration; while the time doesn't allow so much preparation to be made! This may be worked out, however. Before joining, however, there should be a much better security that there will be the orders for this equipment through the connections that
257-112 Page 5
Adelson has.
35. (Q) Should [257] form a corporation with him, or handle on a commission basis? (A) Commission basis would be better at present, but be sure there are the abilities for supplying in the required way and manner through this channel.
36. (Q) Does that refer to [257] having the factory or Adelson having the business? (A) Adelson having the business, as indicated!
37. (Q) [257] has practically worked out a plan of settlement through Jack Gilbert, the attorney. If it can be consummated, is it better than going through bankruptcy? (A) As given concerning this relation, and those things that are dependent upon same, provided there is the washing out - or no continued re-opening of the conditions for a sufficient period to allow the whole thing to be worked out, well and good! But no part of it should be dependent upon any individual or group as receiving, or being in a position to OPEN any of or question any of - the associations or connections that [257] may make. As we still find, to wash it out through such bankruptcy proceedings would be better; unless these can be cleared in the same way and manner without going through bankruptcy.
38. (Q) In other words, bankruptcy is recommended if it cannot be worked out this way? (A) It is. For, to have self continually in a turmoil by inspectors, or questioners, or to continually enter into what it's received from this association, or this order, or this connection, would make for such a turmoil as to bring destruction - even more than at present. But, if sufficient TIME may be given - and there are no strings tied to it, then it may be carried out without bankruptcy. Without such time being given, with no strings tied, then we would go through bankruptcy.
39. (Q) How much time would the Forces suggest as necessary? (A) At least three years. While it may be washed out even before, this much time SHOULD be given.
40. (Q) What kind of an organization will satisfy the creditors and not tie [257] down as indicated? (A) That there is given so much time for the activities, or when there is so much profit shown by the returns as to that gained by [257] from his returns to the Government, then on that basis may it be paid each year. Then there can be no question; but if the individuals,
257-112 Page 6
groups, or a combined organization, may come in and investigate for themselves, it would STILL make for such entanglements as to be a great worry!
41. (Q) Will Gilbert be able to settle [257]'s suit with [900] and for what amount should settlement be made? (A) For at least sufficient amount to take care of all the associations and connections in that particular field, and unless it is that much we wouldn't accept it! That would require, then, a concession on the part of others as well as on the part of [257]'s considerations in the present.
42. (Q) How much will [3734]'s take for their suit against [257]? (A) Half.
43. (Q) What is [900]'s attitude to [257] at present, as to settling these affairs? (A) The desire that they be cleared up. They cause a good deal of comment, and a good deal of worry to the body - [900].
44. (Q) Should [257] endeavor to collect all the stocks together of East Coast that [257] recommended his friends to buy from [900]? (A) Be well!
45. (Q) On what basis per share? (A) On the basis that this will clarify all the connections and conditions that exist between [257] and [900].
46. (Q) How can [257] be relieved from further responsibility by [900] & [137] from the Cayce Hospital notes? (A) Through the Court in the County in which this is held, and which is in action at the present time. Demanding through the Judge and through the Corporation of the State that granted the charter of same, that the release be made - inasmuch as all the property was returned to [900].
47. (Q) What is [137]'s attitude to [257]? (A) Rather somewhat of a resentment, but may be turned for ANY action just so it is all cleared up!
48. (Q) Should [257] sit in the meetings with [900] & [137] themselves, as suggested? (A) Not until THEY ask for it!
49. (Q) What should [257] do in the matter himself, and what should his attitude be to [900] & [137]? (A) That the desire is that it all be cleared up, with no animosity, no hard feelings whatsoever.
50. (Q) Should [257] send this message to them through Gilbert? (A) It's through Gilbert that it must be handled!
51. (Q) Why did [900] tell the income tax man to go to
257-112 Page 7
[3734] this week and get her opinion about my affairs? (A) For it had been considered that the information obtained by the lawyers and associates in other activities was correct, respecting [257]'s activities and associations. All of this will be proven to be all wrong, or much of it will.
52. (Q) Should [257] go into long conversations about these affairs when he meets [900]? (A) He should NOT!
53. (Q) What should [257] say to [900] & [137] in this meeting? (A) Let's get it through in the most equitable way to all.
54. (Q) Considering all present conditions in market, should [257] raise his prices on refrigerators at coming market? (A) The same as all others raise, or those that are in the same field. These must be at least from two to eight percent higher.
55. (Q) Should [257] attempt to take on other lines at Chicago market for sale in the east, or not? (A) That should be governed by the ability for the delivery of those that are already taken on. Do not be in the position (as the body has been warned of) where the body is a competitor to self in the presenting of various lines.
56. (Q) I mean in other lines of furniture, not refrigerators. (A) Other lines of furniture would be well to consider for the next season, but not beginning much before the delivery for the fall - or late fall and early spring. There'll not be sufficient stabilization to warrant the taking on of such before that time.
57. (Q) Should [257] talk to Briggs on building refrigeration cabinets in 1934, instead of Truscon? (A) This may be a good consideration, unless there can be the assurance that there will be the full outlet to the activities of [257] from Truscon.
58. (Q) What is Truscon's attitude to [257] at this time? (A) It's very good, though there have been some questionings as to the way in which some of the accounts have been handled. These are very good, though, at present.
59. (Q) Is Julius Kahn in complete control of Truscon today? (A) No.
60. (Q) Who really has the control today? so we can work with them? (A) Some of those in Detroit and Cleveland.
257-112 Page 8
61. (Q) Any special man in Detroit? (A) Those whom [257] knows.
62. (Q) Will [257] be able to continue carrying his full life insurance, or should it be better to cut some of it down? (A) As we find, as given, he will be able to continue carrying it complete.
63. (Q) Should [257] follow lead he received and attempt to invest $5,000 in cotton? (A) It's a very good lead; but it's very dangerous business!
64. (Q) Will the new commissioner Johnson be able to raise cotton prices? (A) In about the same ratio as wheat has been raised! From 53 cents to 80 cents is quite a difference in wheat! From 13 to 16 dollars a bale will be considerable raise!
65. (Q) Considering all circumstances, please advise [257] what his activities should be for best advancement, mentally, physically and financially, for next 90 days? (A) To be sure, a great deal of this would depend upon the abilities of those who are handling the closing up of those conditions that have been so troublesome in the affairs of [257]. If these are such as to demand the requirements of going through the program of retirement for the time, then this has been set out. As for those necessitating the carrying on for the time, then the activities in the market should be carried on in such a manner as to make those connections, associations and relations that will enable the body to carry on in all the fields of activity; then a period of rest.
66. (Q) When should I take the rest? (A) On returning from market.
67. (Q) Where should I go for the rest? (A) Wherever there is the best association and relation for a real relaxation to the whole body.
68. (Q) Better on board ship or at Virginia Beach? (A) Virginia Beach would be better than on board the ship, for the body; for, remember your sinus condition!
69. (Q) Is [1565] doing everything in his capacity to make a success for [257]? (A) Excellent! Don't get so discouraged so easily, though, at times.
70. (Q) What will be his future with the [257] organization? (A) This, to be sure, would be something of a problem, for it becomes too dependent upon the various activities and the various abilities that are shown in the various fields in
257-112 Page 9
which the activities are to be pursued, but if these are followed with the same amount of energy, the same amount of push and effort that has been spent, it will be MOST satisfactory. Do not, because clouds arise - and because troublesome conditions come, lose the optimism that has been had.
71. (Q) Should [257] plan to move from ... St., N.Y.C., to East side of town? If so, where? (A) As we have had this before, in these present surroundings these are excellent - and to change would be renewing of, or the building up of a different character, a different line of activities and associations in the social life. We would not advise any change at the present time.
72. (Q) Is the noise detrimental to the family? (A) The noise of this character is not as detrimental as the noises of another character to the East side!
73. (Q) Should the [1565] family remain in New York as planned? (A) For the present.
74. (Q) Is Philip Marcus giving his best to the [257] Corporation, and is he sincere? (A) Some years ago there was given an analysis of Philip Marcus' activity, and when these were given they were correct. We would look 'em up! It's very good in the present way, and much of the counsel should be followed. The sincerity of the man in the present is lack of sincerity in self, NOT insincerity of his associates! 0 We are through for the present. Copy to [257] - File
