Time of Reading ... Avenue, 3:20 to 3:50 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Body & enquiring mind, who wishes a review of his business affairs and advice as to what he can do at once to bring the mental relief he seeks, and the necessary material returns at once. You will answer the questions he has submitted, as I ask them.)

1. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [257], and the associations and the relations, and those conditions mentally and materially that disturb the body at this time.

2. Ready for questions.

3. (Q) Advise me how to proceed with the Brooklyn Cooperage Co., thru its Vice-President, H. C. Schmidt, to make a deal to build beer barrels? (A) This, as we find, may be at cross-purposes with that which would be for the best interests of the body, as related to the future associations and relations, unless it (the deal) includes that proposition which has been made through the refining company (Sugar Refining Co.). In this matter, then, if it is to be made a portion of the deal - or if it is able to be made a portion of the deal - while it would require a little longer period in making the deliveries, yet - it would facilitate those associations and connections for the further activities of the body, in a much more satisfactory way and manner. If this immediate deal is necessary, for the handling of the immediate situation, the necessary lumber may be obtained from Nahon & Company, who are dealers - and furniture dealers - that have had, do have, the character of lumber necessary for the present needs (These are Brooklyn also, or Brooklyn office).

4. (Q) What kind of a deal should it be? (A) This depends upon whether the desire on the part of [257] is for the immediate (and then be through) or for a continued association and connection, where there will be a

257-115 Page 2

supply that will be necessary to be a continuous thing - as in the supplying of any well regulated organization of this kind or nature. Then, if it is to be for the immediate, carry on through with that with Schmidt. If it is to be one where it will be considered a continuous association and connection, and the body acting in the capacity of the delivery agent - then be sure that the deal includes the sugar company - American Sugar Company.

5. (Q) On what basis should I work? (A) Just as given. Agent.

6. (Q) Where should Gen. McRoberts fit in the picture? (A) Financing.

7. (Q) Where should Ed Whalen of Tromer's Brewery fit in the picture? (A) In the sales end. Contacts.

8. (Q) Where can I buy oak quick? (A) As given, if for one immediate order - that is considered in the present - it can be obtained from Nahon. If it is to be for continued activities, either from the Baltimore concerns, or Mengel in Louisville, or the larger timbers in the raw may be obtained in Carolinas. (For the last, contact Mr. [853], ..., N.C.) [See 853-3 on 9/1/32, Par. 4-A--9-A, & 264-32, 15-A--18-A on 4/9/33.]

9. (Q) Which plant will be best of Brooklyn Cooperage to build barrels? (A) Number three.

10. (Q) Should I proceed to plan entering the field to manufacture beer barrels? (A) We are going at cross-purposes again in our questions, or going backwards. You are planning to be in it, and then ask if you should be in it! This is as considered, and as we have given. ANY activity in this particular field at the present time offers exceptional opportunities for those that may be situated in the associations or connections of supplying materials in this particular line of activity. If the associations and connections, then, lend themselves to such an operation, well to enter - or to consider same.

11. (Q) Is Philadelphia and Asheville as good as Brooklyn for building barrels? (A) Brooklyn offers the better, though - if there are the associations with the sugar company, as we find - it would

257-115 Page 3

open the Asheville works.

12. (Q) What is best plan to accept working with Dunn manufacturers, Soper & his money interests, Allen & Co. with Adelson, or with American Sugar Refining Co.? (A) As given. Any should include the sugar company.

13. (Q) Is American wood as good as Russian or Polish, and will it be as satisfactory? (A) Properly prepared, just as good. And it would be, then, necessary - in preparing same - that it be of the character of the white and red oak, or white and water oak, that is seasoned not only by the natural means but that includes the special preparations that insure the seasoning in the manner that protects it.

14. (Q) Will I be able to close contract on Polish barrels with Lande and Flaherty, as arranged at meeting Tuesday morning in room 1449, Taft Hotel, N.Y.C., with Mr. [426]? [See 426-3 on 10/31/33.] (A) Well to consider, but - as we find - the American product may be worked to a much more advantageous standpoint than that necessary requirement in the exchange and the imports on such an association. Well that the connection be made, if there is to be the general entering into the fields that these may be supplied, in either case, or when demanded.

15. (Q) Can [426] of Poland be relied upon to fulfill (A) To his own capacities, but these don't go too far!

16. (Q) Reference [257] - Gilbert attempt to work out financial settlement plan, will they be able to carry it out and as now laid out by Gilbert? (A) This, to be sure, offers some very hard problems. As to whether or not it will be possible to carry it out depends a great deal upon the TEMPERAMENT of individuals, and as to whether there can be a forced issue or not. As we find, this MAY be carried out; but there will at least be another consideration to be included before it may be closed.

17. (Q) What consideration will that be? (A) More concessions on the part of [257].

18. (Q) Considering new endeavors and advice of McRoberts, am I following best plan to suffer & work out financial plan, or take lawyer's advice of last week and end it as Forces originally advised? (A) There has been given this whole consideration, that unless there can be worked out those plans whereby this gives the body the opportunity to work it out without being

257-115 Page 4

continually hounded - and carrying on in such a manner as to prevent the whole activity being open and aboveboard, it would be better that it be carried as we have given.

19. (Q) What will be the best deal to work out with Richard Ratner? (A) This depends upon what is to be gained by the varied concessions that are made by [257] in the deal. This has been gone over before.

20. (Q) Reference Washington and the water cooler contract, which was to come thru Friday or Monday 3 wks. ago, what deferred it? (A) As given, first there was a social engagement that deferred the activities in this direction. In this social connection there has come about a condition that will prevent the whole amount being carried through. But about a third of the amount may be expected to be placed before the 15th, unless there are decided changes from those things that are being CONSIDERED in the present - and these are possible, but it has been ordered that way!

21. (Q) See why Col. Hammond hesitates and advise me as to my immediate move to see it thru. (A) It has been given why and how, and what is the quantity that has been ordered to be distributed, or ordered placed through Lewis channel.

22. (Q) Is there any reason for me to worry about its not being awarded to me? (A) About a third of it will be.

23. (Q) As to the housing contracts for $750,000, under Gen. Basch, will Hoefer & Lewis be able to consummate this deal? (A) As we find, these are being SERIOUSLY considered. As to whether it is to reach the point of its becoming a bonified order or not has not been determined, for there is still the attempt of the wood to be substituted rather than the metal.

24. (Q) How long will it take? (A) Be about the 15th of September.

25. (Q) Any changes for me to make in the plans, to have them accepted? (A) It has been outlined as to the character, the kind, the manner, the way these should be presented - and what portions of the country would be most acceptable for these operations.

26. (Q) What aid can Ellis Soper of 17 E. 45th St., N.Y.C., lend to me in these construction propositions? (A) Very little.

27. (Q) Where best to build houses before shipping? (A) In the plants where they may be constructed in the proper way and manner!

257-115 Page 5

28. (Q) What step should I have [1565] to take to get a big share of refrigerator business after the market, which he is now conducting at the Pennsylvania Hotel in N.Y.C.? (A) The regular plan that has already laid out is the most plausible and most feasible plan for getting the share, or getting the PROPER share, of this particular business.

29. (Q) Am I handling my business affairs in a way approved by the Forces to gain the necessary material gains needed for my immediate requirements? (A) Very good; save at times you have been running over self, running around in circles, confusing the orders in some directions. As in the beer barrels, these have made a confusion before there is any DEFINITE plan; and it is giving others an opportunity to work in on the same character of deals. Otherwise, very good.

30. (Q) What improvement is recommended for the month of August? (A) The PLANS are very good for the month of August. Work the PLANS!

31. (Q) Which plan best to follow the closest for quickest returns? (A) The immediate order in the barrels.

32. (Q) What is the proper way to further conduct negotiations started with Stewart-Warner on "Harris Color"? (A) This, as we find, is a farther-reaching proposition and association that may appear on the surface. At first glance there seems little to be gained over the techni-chrome color by the Harris plan, yet - as it develops - this will show that the Harris process is nearer to that which makes the natural colors in process under Kleig lights, or artificial lighting, than is possible to be made under the techni-chrome color. In carrying out with the Stewart-Warner, as we find, this is very well; yet they are hardly the PROPER ones for the full consideration of such a far-reaching proposition. And to include in same the operative forces of those associated in the larger organizations in the technical departments of producers would be more in line with carrying same out, see? There is a big proposition! It's the biggest [257] ever had hold of! This would mean a billion, where others have meant a million!

33. (Q) Should [257] try to work on such a thing while so harassed? (A) It's too big to turn loose, yet it may not be possible to hold it - because it is so big!

34. (Q) Will I be able to sell the plan & proposition thru Carl Mason as laid out? (A) Carl Mason isn't big enough!

257-115 Page 6

35. (Q) Who in Stewart-Warner is? (A) That's as we have given! Stewart-Warner itself isn't big enough! because they do not own it; they control an interest, and are NOT capable - in their technical departments - to carry it to its best proposition!

36. (Q) Will the Forces give an organization that [257] can go through? (A) It's just been given! ANY of the TECHNICAL departments of the LARGER PRODUCERS!

37. (Q) When will my affairs be in such shape financially that I can take a 3 wks. rest? (A) When you sell the kegs!

38. (Q) Gen. McRoberts suggests that I not push suit against Grove to recover a settlement for Paris Medicine commissions. What should my attitude be? (A) As given, work rather in line with the channel through whom the proposition was presented first - SEELY!

39. (Q) Seely also advises not to push it. (A) No, he doesn't!

40. (Q) Should I approach Ralph Jonas on the brewery proposition, or on the housing situation, as suggested by Jerry Jonas his cousin? (A) Do not run around in rings. It has just been given McRoberts on one proposition! Then, don't try to use others who are cross-fires with same! He may be used in housing proposition.

41. (Q) What should be my attitude to Fred Seely? (A) As just given. In line with that which will be for the best interests of all concerned. For, they can work TOGETHER. Do not make 'em cross-fires!

42. (Q) How should I handle situation on Ross plan of housing, with Johns-Manville group, whom I am soon to meet? (A) This makes nearer the same proposition, and is being considered in some quarters on housing propositions; for this is BOTH wood and metal. And it's to be SERIOUSLY considered, IF there is the opening for the SUPPLYING OF these houses in ANY of the directions; and it does not hinder from being in the position to supply the metal or those that may be constructed through the association with Manville.
