Time of Reading 11:40 to 11:50 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Body & enquiring mind - Questions)

1. EC: We have the body, the enquiring mind, [257].

2. In the physical forces of this body (before we begin with the string of things he has here - some of them are very poor, too!), we find that if there would be a little more consistency in the application of those things that have been indicated for the better physical welfare of the body, we would find much better results.

3. While the body is not up to PAR in its physical forces, those things of which the body has been warned for nineteen years are breaking - and unless the body takes care of itself, before it's fifty it'll be through! Better take the warning, son! [See 257-220 on 4/7/40 in re surgery for malignant tumor in colon.] [No copy of EC rdgs. on him as early as 1915!]

4. Ready for questions.

5. (Q) E. A. Thompson of the Sterling Store, office 4th floor, 59th St. facing Bloomingdale, near Lexington Ave., is taking a letter from Banker Gibson to Banker Haines the Boss of Morris, and expects to work thru this channel first and then thru the local people, merchants, etc., for local interest. Who would be the proper leader to work thru in the city of Asheville? (A) Naturally, it must be through Morris' associations.

6. (Q) Is the above plan as in Thompson mind set to fulfill the desire for complete accomplishments? (A) It'll take a long time! And all of these as set won't work as they are set out! First: While Morris and associates have failed thus far in making for the using of all of their facilities, the ideas and plans that are presented by this outline here (of Thompson's) do not just bespeak the interests of Morris and associates are to be taken care of in the manner that won't require the spending

of more than has already been spent. And this will find some trouble. This condition also bespeaks of such that there does not give the provision that those that are the laborers in the activities are to be considered in their claims or their abilities to become as much a portion of the organization as has been fostered by the ideas of some of the others. While this would not be made, or may not be made wholly as some of the plans or propositions whereby they will not be troubled with internal labor troubles, remember you are to work in North Carolina - and the laws there do not set exactly as in some of the places where Thompson has laid some of his plans that weren't received quite so well as they were in New Hampshire! But these should be considered in such a way and manner that there is more of a cooperative activity, not only for the local capital that will be necessary but - as indicated - this may be included in some of the governmental experimental activities, as in those things that have been instigated or inference made concerning. Consider those. It'll take some time, but it might work it out!

7. (Q) What will be best day to arrive in Asheville, to begin the work? (A) When it begins to work; when it knows what it's going to do and what is the proposition to be presented - that's the day! Don't go off half cocked!

8. (Q) What should [257] do in reference calling or seeing Seely, considering Paris Medicine matter - how should he proceed on this situation? (A) The conference that has been had with Seely respecting this, in those periods when there was the serious consideration of the necessity of making these changes, should make for at least sufficient of a lead to open those necessary negotiations - as it is necessary to have Seely on the side of [257] in any of its activities.

9. (Q) Should anyone else go with Thompson or with [257] to Asheville? (A) If [257] is acquainted with what is to be presented, as he knows the people - if he doesn't talk too much, why it would be very well for [257] to go. We wouldn't take others. But let Thompson do the promising! Don't let [257] do any promising!

10. (Q) Considering all the above work, what interest should [257] show in the suggestion made by John Kane of 16 Park Ave., 10th floor? (A) Consider it until those times when there may be other activities that may be necessary for [257]'s drawing off into the fields that have been indicated. Don't drop the other things! Because the other's not hot enough now to

257-140 Page 3

require the dropping of those associations, either in the liquor interest or any of the others! Follow these on out for the present. For you'll find it'll be another six months before this can be negotiated into any way or manner in which there would be any returns direct to [257] from these connections. And many of these plans will be changed.
