Time of Reading 11:25 to 11:45 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. N.Y.C.

1. GC: Representatives of the Showers Bros. Co. in space 1501 at 666 Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, Ill. Guy Burnett, the President; Leslie Sailors, Gen. Sales Mgr., & [257], Eastern Sales. Please advise them whether they have fully prepared themselves to meet the conditions necessary to have a successful market in point of sales, designs, quality, and what advice they need to meet the requirements.

2. EC: We have the enquiring mind in [257], the associations and relations here with Showers furniture.

3. The questions as given here were for consideration in the past.

4. As we find, while the connections have been satisfactory in many respects, there have arisen some questions especially in regard to some of the lines in specific territory. While the sales and the connections have not in some quarters reached as much as had been hoped, in others there has been a very satisfactory meeting.

5. As we find, as has been indicated for the furniture mart in general, those lines that would conform to certain periods would be and are those that are coming more and more into the demands in certain fields of activity; while the mediums - and what may be termed the larger quantities, or the "bread and meat" grades - are more and more toward the plain. THESE are the conditions as we find them.

6. Ready for questions.

7. (Q) If a change of factory is really necessary, would the factory run by Hugh Wilkerson, known as Spencer Cardinal, located at Marion, Indiana, be satisfactory? (A) If this would be necessary, but - as we find - there have already been those steps taken for the handling of this order.

8. (Q) How will Dunning feel if [257] wants to switch the factory again? (A) This has already been expressed or manifested as a dissatisfied condition, yet the attitude towards [257] is a

257-153 Page 2

very satisfactory one.

9. (Q) Advise [257] what to do for best interests of fair play to all concerned? (A) This has been given, that this should have been handled through the Showers factory for the best interests of [257], best interests of the association and work of the factory. As to the manner in which it is being or is to be handled, these we do not find will come entirely to satisfaction. And some disturbance or disputes will arise from same.

10. (Q) Was the decision made by the President in reference General Electric order to the best interests of the company? (A) As indicated.

11. (Q) What is next move that [257] must make with General Electric to restore the confidence needed to get a big share of their business? (A) It isn't necessary to restore anything! It is necessary that there be such an activity with same, if [257] is to be in the position of handling future orders, that may be had through these channels, to have such connections and associations that it may be made in compliance with the specifications as indicated by General Electric representatives.

12. (Q) Should [257] suggest to G.E. anything about the mouldings or decorations they spoke about, or continue to make as their sample shows? (A) This would have been well. And, as we find, would have been made satisfactory.

13. (Q) What attitude should Burnett take with them, for the best interests of all concerned? (A) That is for BURNETT to say. For those ideals of the General Electric and its associations, and the ideals of the representatives should have been or must be one - if there are to be amiable or satisfactory dealings. As to WHO shall make the changes necessary for the conforming to the proper principles in associations of the kind, this is for THEM to say; not for THESE channels to give.

14. (Q) How much business can [257] expect if the friendship is restored from G.E.? (A) There's no friendship to be restored; only conform to the specifications and those activities necessary to remain or to keep in accord with the policies and the rules and regulations of the General Electric. And there may be expected about five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) worth of business in the next season.

15. (Q) Will Dunning come to Chicago if invited by Burnett? (A) If on the proper basis, yes.

16. (Q) On what basis or reason can Burnett invite him to be sure he will come? (A) That is to make an equitable UNDERSTANDING as to what is to be accomplished, to be met. But these conditions are in the past, and not the future - except for future business.

17. (Q) To aid the future relation please advise who is really to blame in present situation? (A) Lack of proper ideas or ideals of each. These should be made to conform. And policies that are not compatible or cooperative.

18. (Q) What improvement can be made in the present line of samples to meet the Eastern trade demands? (A) As indicated, the periods. Then the general line of the more plain, and woods that will stand the wear in the varied activities necessary.

19. (Q) Will this market prove satisfactory to [257], and what can he do to assure a good volume of business? (A) As indicated; and we would carry on for the rest of the period in the same way and manner.

20. (Q) Please advise Mr. Sailors as to how he can help the Eastern Division to be successful. (A) To supply those things necessary, or instill into [257] what the policies are and let [257] conform to the policies OF the sales management.

21. (Q) What advice for Mr. Burnett to aid in carrying out the plans he has to make the company successful? (A) Carry on. These are very good. We would carry on.

22. (Q) Will the company be able to make money in 1935? (A) It should.

23. (Q) Please advise [257] as to his approach to the old friends and former buyers so he will handle his re-entry satisfactorily, and start off with as few errors as possible. (A) This has been handled very well. The approach is only through those same manners in which there have been the connections heretofore; save, as has been indicated to [257], there must be a greater conformity of [257] to the policies of the Showers associations and in his dealings with the trade in every phase of same make for the MORE of the saving for Showers than the saving for INDIVIDUALS in particular lines or activities.

24. (Q) Any advice for [257]'s health that he must watch in Chicago? (A) [257]'s health and the furniture are not ONE! But this has been very good.

25. (Q) What food best for him considering the

257-153 Page 4

climate-nerve energy, etc? (A) As has been given; it hasn't changed any. Those foods in the surroundings or that are grown there; and keeping to those of the alkalin-reacting that are the better; keeping the eliminations and being mindful of those tendencies as indicated in the circulatory forces to the soft tissue in face and head.

26. (Q) What will bring the close friendship between the three men of the company that [257] desires? (A) Conformity to the policies that are set. Be cooperative and be open and aboveboard in every activity.

27. (Q) Explain to [257] about Mr. Burnett, also Mr. Sailors, so when they work together each will understand the natures of the others, as [257] will show the information to each. (A) That these should be in those lines as set by Burnett as to the policies in the various phases of activity. The others then should lead and follow in those PHASES of same as pointed out in THEIR activities. Let those all keep true to themselves and true to one another in their relations.
