Time of Reading 11:00 to 11:20 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Body & enquiring mind. Questions.)

1. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [257]. Ready for questions.

2. (Q) Shall we join Meadoff Melnicker jobbing business? (A) No.

3. (Q) Shall I go to [994] Tuesday? [See 257-160 on 1/30/36. Also 994-3.] (A) This, of course, requires a great many considerations on the part of those that have made arrangements for an acceptance of other types or other finish. This will not make for any special help, as we find, unless there is a rejection on the part of others, for the business. But as we find these conditions are in the [994] factory: Here we have the facilities, the finances to handle the situations as desired by [257] and those to whom he would sell these products, or the cabinets. Yet there has not been the inclination on the part of [994] to alter or change their equipment for the production of these products on the scale that has been as YET indicated. [994] having specialized in other lines of endeavor, it requires - as in EVERY organization - that there be not only the change of equipment but the change of cutting of this, the change of machine, the change of finish, the change of all these. The question has been with [994], does and will it JUSTIFY him for the outlook at present? He has been persuaded it does not. That is the situation as it exists. If there is the desire, owing to other conditions that may develop, to attempt to persuade [994] to enter into this, very well. Otherwise, first go to those that HAVE been indicated, and this rather as a second choice - or necessity for emergency situations. Unless there can be a whole

hearted cooperation on the part of each, under those considerations, as we have indicated leave it alone! In the consideration of Showers or Burnett and the Dunning situation: Here you have an attempt on the part of the buyer and the seller to get together. Work this out! As to the connections or the situations with the finance corporation, that make it possible for the advancing of other moneys for the carrying on or handling of such a production, and in such a way and manner: From the very interests and experience of the body, [257], it should be very well understood as to how hard it becomes to get those in a bank (First National of Chicago) to advance other funds than what has already been indicated would be allowed for the factory to use in attempting to meet its obligations. And as indicated, there then becomes the necessity - owing to the situation - to not allow [257] or Dunning to go direct to bank, UNLESS there can be through Dunning or through Showers or through Burnett or Showers the presenting of this. And this may be accomplished owing to the situation, if there is the proper consideration given [257] and he is not left outside by Dunning and Burnett going together and leaving [257] out. See?

4. (Q) Advise would Wallach association work out? (A) This will depend upon a great many other conditions. As we find, it would be a very satisfactory association in a manner.

5. (Q) Any other Pennsylvania factory available? (A) Owing to the general situations, these will have to be looked into for their financial situations in the present.

6. (Q) Lay out plan of operation for next ten days for best concentration and successful termination. (A) To Showers with Burnett for the carrying forward of the present project.

7. (Q) What warnings needed for present plans? (A) As indicated, that [257] himself is not left out, owing to bringing the two together.

8. (Q) Will Showers be able and willing to take business from Dunning this week? (A) Provided there can be those conditions met as indicated. Under the situations, as the entity or body [257] SHOULD know, there is so much money allowed by the

257-164 Page 3

financiers, or the finance corporation, or the bank, to the organization for the handling of the situations, see? If this can be accomplished on that which is allowable, or on the budget and then not hinder any of the other projects for Burnett or Showers or those handling same, then it may be very readily handled. Owing to the account, the type of the account, everything considered this SHOULD be easily handled.

9. (Q) How many cabinets will they be willing to accept from Dunning in the first order? (A) All that their finances will permit.

10. (Q) Considering present attitude of Burnett to [257], will he pay [257] a fair commission for the business without [257] going West to see him? (A) It will require [257]'s presence.

11. (Q) Should [257] go west and see him next week? (A) Whether he would go next week or next year, or when - it requires his presence! When does he want it, and when does he get it all together? These should be in keeping rather with the situations as to time, place and when.

12. (Q) Is the Gerling factory at Shelbyville, Ind., factory able to make cabinets and would it be satisfactory to Dunning? (A) Able to make cabinets but not in a financial position for such large orders; but can be made satisfactory for the product itself. Very good connection if it can be made to handle certain numbers; or, owing to the general situation, divided up in such a way that a certain number will be made in one factory and another in another factory, see?

13. (Q) Will their prices be right? (A) Well, this would depend upon the ability of the salesman and the requirements necessary. Remember, in changing factories for cabinets of such a nature, there is the necessity of setting various things and these must be taken into consideration. Machines, plants, equipment, finish, conditions, those things that go with all of these. Remember, when a plant is made to make certain specialties it has to be changed in order to make something else. Do you make cabinets for these in those factories where kitchen materials are made? Do you make these in a chair factory? Do you make these in those that only make specialty tables? and these especially of metal? While metal and wood in combination are well, it is known by the body's experience that changes are necessary. Take all of these in consideration; the equipment, the financial status, the

material on hand, the needs of the whole situation.

14. (Q) [257] is considering the Monitor plant at Evansville - (A) Not so good.

15. (Q) Should [257] endeavor to put Stewart Warner and G.E. in same factory? (A) No. Not unless these come of such a nature or such a cutting that they compare well in their needs.

16. (Q) What is the best plant to put Emerson of N.Y. in? (A) In Warren, as we find.

17. (Q) Will Thos. Creal of Warren Furniture Co. make an agreement with [257] to represent him with G.E. and Stewart Warner and when? (A) This depends upon other situations and those conditions over which neither of these have any direct influence at the present time. This will come later.

18. (Q) Should [257] visit the bankers who own Showers plant while in Chicago? (A) That depends, as just indicated. There is the desire on the part of Burnett to keep this from becoming a part of the necessary routine, see? This may be handled diplomatically and be handled, but not as an overlord nor being able to tell Burnett what to do. While [257]'s abilities and experience in these might lend help to Burnett, does one always want to feel that he is being dictated to by his salesmen?

19. (Q) Is [257] following the Forces as suggested in getting a Pennsylvania factory and a Southwestern factory? (A) Partially. Check it over with self.

20. (Q) Are there any other factories he should contact? (A) As indicated, just those necessary to carry on that needed and desired at this time.

21. (Q) Is there anything else [257] should do or write Burnett at the - present time - (A) Better go and see him, when the time comes!

22. (Q) [257] is trying to be fair with the customer, factory and self - (A) Then act that way; that's all!

23. (Q) Please advise [189] what she can do to assist [257] - (A) We haven't [189]!

24. (Q) What does [257] need in his organization today to help him get his business working profitably? (A) Personal coordination in all of its channels. UNITY of purpose, of desire and aim.

25. (Q) Should [257] endeavor to get Berkey & Gay of Grand Rapids to build radio cabinets for G.E., or are there any other factories in Michigan which would be available for

257-164 Page 5

this business? (A) If this becomes necessary, it is a very good outlet; but they are in very poor financial status to handle such situations.

26. (Q) Are there any other factories in Michigan - (A) We do not find so, unless there are made other connections or arrangements than we find existent in the present. Follow through on these. Let's take these as they come, and as we find these would work for the better in the present.
