In Mr. Hughes' Time of Reading office, Radio 3:40 to 4:10 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. Buying Office of G.E. Co., Bridgeport, Conn. (..., N.Y.)
1. GC: You will have before you [257], his associates and associations, especially the Brunswick and American Furniture interests, the Mersman Company and Herbert Weisburgh, E. O. Brown and other associates in the enterprise, also the officials at the General Electric Radio Division at Bridgeport. Please review the development of the Brunswick business as operated and directed by [257] and [1565] and advise them best plans for future best success, local and national. You will answer questions.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [257], associates and associations.
3. In those affairs of the Brunswick corporation, while many phases of same are not altogether satisfactory, in the main or in the whole we find these are progressing very well.
4. There needs be some very definite policies set, as well as the adherence to many of the suggestions that have been indicated respecting various individuals and activities that have been indicated.
5. The approach to these should be more and more in line with that which should be the life policy of each associate of the organization, or else leave off those attempts to secure information through those channels that are insistent that these be the basis of the policies and operations.
6. Ready for questions.
7. (Q) Is the present cabinet and radio line sufficient to make a success this season 1940? (A) These are as we find, save with a few changes that will be apparent from time to time, sufficient to make a success with same.
8. (Q) What effect will the RCA chassis and phonograph have on success this year? (A) This, to be sure - if there is the lawful right to give
257-209 Page 2
this as a selling point - will be appealing in some fields of endeavor; and where and when this is such as it may be used, do so. But do not involve self, unless - with the use of same - there is the combination of R.C.A. with the rest of the organization work.
9. (Q) Am I handling the G.E. business properly? (A) This is being handled in the present in very good shape, if there is the ability later - through the associations and connections - to deliver the goods or the products that they are asking for or seeking. But do not involve self in such a manner in the activity as to make the price such that there is NOT sufficient to induce others, or the manufacturer or the cabinet maker, to build same - without a great deal of trouble and expense.
10. (Q) Will I get the business? (A) As we find, it will be divided; but sufficient to be worth while if there are those suggestions adhered to as indicated.
11. (Q) How much can I get? (A) Three-thirds, which would be all of one class and some of other classes. There will be certain numbers, as we find, in which most of the business may be had.
12. (Q) Is the letter satisfactory, which Mr. Simmons of American Fur. Co. gave me reference the business? (A) This should be satisfactory. There will be other letters regarding this, but as we find it is a basis of being satisfactory.
13. (Q) Should I have a contract, or can I depend upon American Fur. giving me the fair commission? (A) Better, of course, the contract; but remember the policies as we have indicated that are the basis of the American Furniture Company activities. But as self is seeking for a contract, or desirous of one, then the surety in same is better - and will be available.
14. (Q) What answer shall I give Mr. Simmons in reference taking the difference in the factory and paying me what it is worth? Is that equitable and fair? (A) This as has been indicated will be worked out in a fair basis.
15. (Q) What kind of agreement should I have with the factory reference future orders and associations after the radio division? (A) As we have indicated, this should carry all the way through, on future orders also. For it is the inducement that has brought about the eventual change - and this should be, or the body should receive the
257-209 Page 3
proper consideration in reference to future orders.
16. (Q) What is the future for American Fur. Co. making radio cabinets under the direction of [257]? (A) If there is the adherence to those suggestions that have been so oft given respecting the making of such agreements, such contracts - Know that where there is to be the setting of prices to be from [257]'s interest and when this is considered it will be felt and seen the necessity of upholding the proper relationships and proper contracts, - as we find that can be made, under the direction and policies of the American Furniture Company, one of the outstanding of the radio cabinet manufactures - in the American plant.
17. (Q) Regarding Brunswick business - what corrections to be made now in sales plan as laid out by [1565] and okayed by [257]? (A) As indicated, there are some positions or places where the activities have not been altogether satisfactory. But if there is a policy set, these as we find CAN be worked out. In this character of activity, there should be a very definite plan; and thus may the organization come to be known as a definite plan organization, and not one that is pulled here and there and specialty given in this place and not in the other and the like. It should be not so much a one-price as a one-policy organization.
18. (Q) Should [257] handle any additional accounts besides ones in N.Y.? (A) Those in New York and environs, as we have indicated, are the better for [257] to handle.
19. (Q) Is price range $29 to $229 satisfactory or can it be improved to meet public need? (A) $24.75 to $240 should be more in the right range.
20. (Q) When shall we ask Warner Bros. to put a definite purchase price on business? (A) By or before the middle of September.
21. (Q) How much should it be and on what basis? (A) This had best be worked out by them AND NOT FROM HERE.
22. (Q) Who is best man to talk to reduce royalty? (A) These are in line with some of the policies and of those that have been and should be set. As to who - such as these should come through the regular channel of those in authority set to take care of such things.
23. (Q) How can Harry Goetz help us to buy it right? (A) By the mere suggestions and working in the associations or conjunction with [257] and [1565].

257-209 Page 4

25. (Q) Could Nelson Rockefeller help us since he is in the Williamsburg District Proposition? (A) This could be a help, but don't pay too big a price for the help he will give!
26. (Q) How can Walter Wallace of Warner Bros., 321 West 44th St., still help us with company and its success? (A) We do not find a great deal of help save as will be long range help in advice.
27. (Q) What future connection best for Wallace with us? (A) Let that be determined by that which will be attempted to be worked out at this time.
28. (Q) Is it best for us to sell Chain stores like Davega in N.Y. or small dealer association such as we are working with? (A) The both of these may be handled, if they are handled as the policy is set for the handling of same. Of course, the Chain stores are the larger outlet for such.
29. (Q) With present set-up with [994], will we get all the merchandise we need this year? (A) This year, yes.
30. (Q) Is this the time to try to work a closer tie-up with [994] with a prospect of a merger of [994] Bros. and Brunswick? (A) This will come - if it is to be worked out at all - by the middle or latter part of October, or before the middle of November.
31. (Q) Will American Fur. Co. of Martinsville be of interest to Brunswick for cheaper cabinets? (A) May be a little bit later, but it must begin its operations first in a definte way and manner, and these may best be worked with portion of the organization and activity as at present being considered. This should come later. But first set the policy.

36. (Q) In American-Brunswick, would there be any reason
257-209 Page 5
for such a tie-up or possibility? (A) We do not find same at present.

38. (Q) Advise [257] what to do, what to be careful of, and what to know to guide company to success. (A) As indicated - these have been given so often! If there will be the adherence in the manner as has been outlined, there needs be no disturbance at this time.
39. (Q) Will Jobbers ever be necessary or direct selling better for national sales? (A) Direct selling will continue to be better for national sales.
40. (Q) Why is this better? (A) That is the experience, and that is that sought by each dealer - whether he sells one or five or five hundred - to deal direct!
41. (Q) Should we carry stock in any cities at all? If so, which one? (A) This will depend upon the general trend, and may be builded a little bit later when the policies have been fully set up.
42. (Q) What type of advertising best - national or local participation? (A) Local in its nature and national in its aspect is the better; that is, carried in local activities where there is the general trend or general set-up already - but in a national manner or way.
43. (Q) Please discuss best policy on advertising and give reasons for same. (A) As just indicated, these make more of the individual or direct appeal through the individuals that are chosen as the channels for the outlet of same, but produces and makes for closer ties of same with the whole general organization.
44. (Q) Will RCA live up to all promises and give us enough merchandise as promised this year? (A) As we find, they will.

257-209 Page 6
Company or investing in American Company? (A) As we find, it may be worked out where not only English capital may be invested in American but there will be a representative of same in the English country.
48. (Q) Should we issue stock to Mr. [994] and on what basis if we should? (A) This is dependent upon what agreements are reached when there is the considering of the general merging of all activities of [994] and Brunswick. This would require a great deal of work and agreement to be reached yet.

52. (Q) What particular work should be laid out for [sec'ty Mrs. [189]] in N.Y. office? (A) This has been very well laid out! Don't put too much on her!
53. (Q) How can her value be improved upon? (A) How can you keep the value that she really is giving the organization, you had better ask yourself!

(A) This may be done, but we do not find it being the most advisable way or manner - owing to conditions that will arise in the affairs and life of [349].
