Time of Reading Arthurdale Inn., 3:10 to 3:30 P.M. Eastern Standard Time. Arthurdale, West Va.

1. GC: You will have before you [257], in his room at Arthurdale Inn, Arthurdale, West Va., with his physical, mental and material conditions. After the physical check up, go over his business associations, especially with Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, the Dept. of Agriculture thru Mr. Mason Barr of the South Bldg. of Agriculture, and with the War Production Board located in Temporary Bldg. "E" with Mr. Screb, and his relations with Mr. Peed, Room 797 Treasury Procurement Bldg., Washington, D.C. You will do this so that [257] will know if he is thinking clearly and in the right manner for the best interests of the Government and the problems of winning the war. After the review, please answer all the questions he has submitted, as I ask them:

2. EC: There is some disturbance about the whereabouts of the body. [See 257-240, Par. R1.] We have the enquiring mind. Ready for questions.

3. (Q) How can I regulate myself at Arthurdale to aid my health and renew my vigor? (A) By the adherence, as near as practical, to those applications that have been suggested. This should be a nominal, normal development for the body, from the balancing of the activities, as we have so oft indicated for the body. Take those precautions as to diet, sufficient activity, sufficient relaxation, sufficient mental and physical improvement, and general conditions. These should keep the body near in the good physical reaction, and these will - if those precautions are kept as we have indicated.

4. (Q) Can I further heal my sphincter nerve so as to stop the reoccurring of the bleeding? (A) Such occurrences are as much from indiscretions as from other conditions. The use of the injections as we have indicated for the healing - the oil injections - if done systematically - will be the better help; that is, use the

257-240 Page 2

injection once a week irrespective of whether or not there has been the indication of blood, see? But, most of all, be precautious about the rare beef and any carbonated or hops drinks.

5. (Q) What can I do to reduce my weight and aid my body while at Arthurdale? (A) As outlined, if this is to be done it is necessary to keep down the calories - and the manner has been outlined sufficiently, if there is the adherence to same!

6. (Q) What exercise best for me at Arthurdale? (A) Walking is the best exercise.

7. (Q) Any tonics or medicines needed? (A) These are not necessary in the present, as we find.

8. (Q) What foods best for me, including whole milk diet, considering time and place? (A) Whole milk diet isn't always the best! It is best if you want to keep fat! That's what they give their pigs - usually! But keep down calories and too much of fats.

9. (Q) Would ordinary Sun Lamp be of any help to me? (A) If there is NOT the exercise in the open air or sunshine, this is well. But do have it at least sufficient distance from the body NOT to localize any disturbance in the system - at least fifty-six inches.

10. (Q) As to Mrs. Roosevelt's visit on Feb. 6th, please direct me as to what discussions to have with her? (A) These should be the normal outgrowth of the developments and possibilities and probabilities. These should be directed by Mrs. Roosevelt, not Mr. [257] but Mr. [257] be ready to answer all of those questions asked; also to indicate - if there is to be the carrying on of all the activities - as to what the desires are, but these in keeping with those principles that have been and may be outlined from the Department of Agriculture.

11. (Q) Shall I discuss any particular plan of operation of the project and its industries for my best future with the Government and with her? (A) As indicated, the best lead is to be able to answer those questions that may be asked and to indicate that wherein the body may be able to supply those things needed in defense projects, more than defense of self.

12. (Q) Should shells, bullets or fuses be made at Arthurdale, since the Government needs them so badly? (A) If this is the part of the activities easily capable of being made, this would be very well.

13. (Q) Would wooden desks or filing cabinets work well with Radio? (A) Desks, preferably.

257-240 Page 3

14. (Q) Since I have been promised 7500 complete Radio sets and Record Players for 1942, will that make it successful until we can change over to munitions? (A) It should.

15. (Q) Considering Harry Nichols of Room 1951 Barbizon Plaza Hotel, N.Y., as the Chief Engineer, would he be a good start for a staff on munitions making? (A) This as we find might be made so, but there are some question marks here, as we find.

16. (Q) Should we include the Brumberger tool shop in Brooklyn, 34 - 34th St., as part of the factory group to train labor for Arthurdale? (A) This will be rather an expensive manner. But if there are the needs for same, then it may be included, provided the Government activities aid in doing so - otherwise it would be too expensive.

17. (Q) Should I seek help from Congressman Randolph of West Virginia or better work thru Gene Herz or Milton Winogrand of the War Dept. or someone else? (A) This depends upon what phases of the activities are finally determined upon.

18. (Q) How will Mrs. Roosevelt feel about the new plants and munitions at Arthurdale? (A) This will depend upon the abilities of the body to indicate that this is in keeping and in line with the policies that were outlined by the body in its first meeting with Mrs. Roosevelt. Then this would be answered best by Mrs. Roosevelt, and not from here.

19. (Q) What changes should I make in my general plans for success and basis of security in my affairs? (A) These should come as in line with those suggestions which have been indicated to the body.

20. (Q) Would Arthurdale or Rockford, Ill., be best for me to make ammunitions, such as steel shells? (A) As we find, Arthurdale would be preferable, and there could be easily assembled that necessary for the making of same, better than the changing over in so much of the activities in Rockford. Because Rockford would be better in anything that has to do with wood working.

21. (Q) As to contract on desks for the Treasury, Mr. Peed, will my bid for Mersman be accepted at 33.79 each? (A) Best to wait and see. As we find, there are some that are equal or lower, but there are other conditions where it may make it practical for at least part of this to be obtained. But these should NOT be the kind of questions sought from here!

22. (Q) Is there anything yet to be done by me to prove my

257-240 Page 4

ability to the Treasury? (A) These will stand on what has been accomplished, not what may be said verbally.

23. (Q) How long should I stay in Arthurdale this time? (A) Long enough to tend to the business there!

24. (Q) What is best plan for me to follow in Washington? (A) That you'll have to take a lead from the possibilities and probabilities of the various projects as may be made cooperative with government needs.

25. (Q) Who are the best friends to cultivate? (A) Those in whatever department or line there is being sought activities, and these in the regular or general way and not by preference from friendship!

26. (Q) What department especially good for my endeavors? (A) As outlined, that in which there is the purchasing or the contracting. These have been outlined for the body.

27. (Q) Is there any suggestion I can make to Mrs. Roosevelt for better handling of Civilian Defense work, where I could assist? (A) This would only be of a local nature as we find, and in any of those projects that are of particular interest to Mrs. Roosevelt. The attempt to interfere in that of a national nature would only cause confusion and not as good association as already exists.

28. (Q) Advising me on procurement, should this be as a part time officer, or part time civilian aid? (A) In whichever there is the choice of the body itself. All of these have been outlined. Analyze them.

29. (Q) In France I was air organizer of the Salvage Division. Should I offer my services to Lessing Rosenwald, who is in charge of this Dept., or should I be satisfied to continue at Arthurdale and make this my complete contribution to defense by building war materials or products needed by army and navy. (A) As has been outlined, it would be well to offer in the Salvage Department; BUT if there is sufficient activity, carry on where you are!

30. (Q) Considering the condition of the U.S. and my desire to serve, what straight line should I follow in my best service to the country, according to my ability? (A) Study to show thyself approved unto God, first; keeping thyself unspotted from condemnation from others or of self. Pretty straight line, but be well to hew to it!

31. (Q) Should I see Donald Nelson myself for a complete discussion as to factory conversion or Arthurdale [for] ability to serve the nation and my personal ability to serve? (A) This depends upon the choice upon which the body is to

257-240 Page 5

act. There should not be the attempt to tell those who are in authority as to the activities in Arthurdale, as to what they should or should not do! To those in authority there can be made suggestions as to what might be accomplished and that the abilities of the body are to direct in certain fields or channels. Stop there.

32. (Q) Please give me time and dates for my plan of activity and guidance. (A) These must come as they are progressed to. These may NOT - they WILL not be given, until you accomplish it!

33. (Q) Regarding the recent dream, which I have copied below, please advise what is the meaning of it all. (I dreamed that I saw an underground room. There was a path of white rocks that led to a grave. My mother seemed to be crying and mourning upstairs over the passing of her mother. She said, "Don't disturb me - let me mourn and cry - it does me good to think of my mother." At the same time I kissed and stroked her, in sympathetic understanding. In the same underground place was a stone which read: "To Mr. - New, Jr., 1 1/2 yrs. old, born to Miss - out of wedlock," and a poem. Under the poem appeared, either in Greek or East Indian letters, a proverb - this was written three times. The man who had done this work in the basement was seated upstairs and he seemed to me a Mexican, Carlos Vilentos of Hollywood, Calif. I read the poems in a book later and I said, "He must have sold these to make money, - maybe they are not true happenings.") (A) (Interrupting) This as we find is a cross-section of more than one experience or vision, and there will come knowledge as concerning some conditions that have been indicated in the vision - which would indicate the needs of circumspect activity on the part of self as well as on the part of those with whom it will be necessary for the body to counsel and advise.
