1. GC: You will have before you the body and enquiring mind of [261], present in this room, who seeks advice and guidance as to his physical condition, as to the general business situation, and as to personal business problems. You will answer the questions he submits, as I ask them:
2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [261]; this we have had before.
3. In the physical body we find there are improvements from that as we have had at times heretofore. While some disturbances still exist, in the main those disturbances show great improvement as related to the assimilating system and the activity of the bodily functions.
4. Ready for questions.
5. (Q) An important factor in the securities market is the fear of investors that the end of the war will make the end of the capitalistic system. Have you any comment? (A) The end of the war will not change the capitalistic system to any great extent. There will be MANY changes in the manner in which relationships will be established in the import and export trade. And this will necessitate some changes in the value of securities in other lands. And to that extent it will make for an equalizing throughout. But the system, in the main, will not be changed.
6. (Q) The difference in yield on high grade bonds and stocks is very great. Does this mean that stocks are cheap or are present prices forecasting a decline in corporate earnings next year? (A) Stocks rather in the tendency of being cheap. For, while there are conditions in the general affairs that are in the present preventing a yield to certain groups, we find that these will gradually be changed. And we will find, even under the great stress under which the country or nation as a whole will be, there WILL be increased earning powers in many of the so-called cheap grades in the present.
7. (Q) What industries are most favorably situated at the
261-34 Page 2
present time - that is, from an investment point of view? (A) Those, of course, that have to do with the supplying of properties or activities to the GENERAL public. Those are the industrials that will come more and more to have the greater opportunity. For, while there will be those tendencies to conserve in many of the situations throughout the country, there will be more and more demand for utilities, for household necessities - even with the high tax on same, even that as must be borne by the consumer. All of these, though, will be found to be made gradually more and more available for the demands made.
8. (Q) Are labor conditions in this country apt to get much worse or are we near a turning point leading to better relations? (A) These, as we have so long indicated, are the serious problems in this country. As we find, these are receiving consideration that has not been heretofore given. While necessary demands, or the needed demands are being made by both labor and capital, there is being worked out that which as we find will bring better relationships by the early spring. OR there will come such divisions as to cause a general uproar, and the needs for legislation to govern or control same - which, under the general stress will work itself to better established relations. So long as there is not a UNITED labor, there may be dealings with same. The greater troubles to be expected are those that MIGHT arise from a united labor against capital.
9. (Q) I am greatly concerned as to the future possibilities for my investment counsel organization. Lower incomes and higher taxes is making it more and more difficult to get new clients and to retain old ones. Have you any comment and suggestions? (A) As we find, as may be indicated from that which has been given, these - to be sure - are periods when such conditions are serious in the experiences of many. But the greater search for the SMALLER investors as we find would be the channels where greater expectancy may be had. And there is where greater counsel may be needed for such a class or such a group; though as we find, conditions will improve after a few months.
10. (Q) I have continued discussions as to the merger of John H. G. Pell & Co., 1 Wall St., with our company. Would you still advise such a merger if it can be arranged at this time? (A) In view of what has been indicated as to the present and the near future AND the future outlook, we would continue negotiations. As we find, this may be consummated and would work advantageously for all concerned. We would continue.
261-34 Page 3
11. (Q) One difficulty has been Mr. Pell's desire to have his office down town, while we prefer our present mid-town location. Have you any comment or suggestion? (A) As we find, there should be the insistency upon the mid-town office; not only for the present activities and the tendencies but for more serious reasons that may within the next few years be a part of the experience of many in the lower sections of Manhattan - from the sources called acts of God or of nature.
12. (Q) I have in my hand copy for a proposed booklet containing our investment philosophy. This copy is still undergoing revision as to details. Have you any comments or suggestions? (A) As we find, the revisions, the details being worked out are worthy of due considerations by all, and - if it is used in those directions that have been indicated - it will appeal to the small investor also, as an excellent medium for help in those directions. This we find good.
13. (Q) Is the choice of title a good one? (A) Very good.
14. (Q) Would the publication of this booklet be helpful in securing new clients? (A) As just suggested, this should be an excellent medium for those very types indicated, as well as maintaining due consideration from old clients - at the same time gaining new clients.
15. (Q) Have you any other suggestion as to how we might increase our business? (A) As has been indicated, and as is being experienced while it requires a great deal of consideration, a great deal of real hard work - the persistency in that direction outlined in the advice and counsel is the better channel, the better means for the continued activity in this field of service. And, as has been indicated, let it be stressed in this brochure or booklet that this is not a service to the advantage of some, but a cooperative service for the good of all. These terms instituted in such will bring spirit and soul into a service that has so oft been questioned, yet that is worthy - a service worthy of the activities of those who are keeping not only the foundations upon which the whole land even, and the whole service of man in this country may be depending, but will keep faith one with the other. As these investments are spread, then, it will bring the opportunity for closer relationships with the problems that are the dissenting ones in the present.
16. (Q) Should I try and engage in any other type of
261-34 Page 4
business either personally or through our organization, so as to increase my income? (A) This as we find must rather be the choice of the entity. For, to divide interests at the present time is to make each weaker in its ability to serve, as well as the ability less to really supply greater income. So as we find, with ALL the considerations, unless there ARE still greater inroads made, stress more and more the possibilities and opportunities that may be brought about in BROADENING the service of the investment counsel corporation.
17. (Q) As to my health, for some time I have been troubled with stiffness in my neck and shoulders, sometimes running up into my head. Have you any comments and suggestions? (A) Sometimes this has come from overtaxation without sufficient relaxation in the open. While some conditions in the physical are much improved, there ARE those tendencies for accumulations of toxic influences. And these pressures, when the physical abilities and mental capacities of the body are under such a stress at times, naturally produce the greater amount of toxic forces to be eliminated. We find that the hydrotherapy, combined with light treatments - that is, the use of either the Alpine Ray or the Ultra-Violet Ray over these areas (that is, the areas of the toxic accumulations and pressures) - will aid in keeping the body physically fit. Do not resort too often, then, to those properties that would upset that gained thus far. Use rather the natural means to keep a better coordination between the general eliminating systems, as related to the quantities of such poisons to be eliminated. These conditions are tending more toward a neuritic effect, or by such overcharges in the plasm of the mesenteric or lymph system such areas are a bit clogged - by cold, drafts, or by the deeper taxation. Thus heat and water are the better applications for such conditions.
18. (Q) Is there any connection between this stiffness and the automobile accident I had last year? (A) An indirect connection, not a direct one in the present. Those strains sustained then, in a manner aided in some directions but made for tendencies for hindrances in other directions. But the type of therapeutic applications suggested should bring the better conditions for this body,
261-34 Page 5
as we find, and eliminate more and more those tendencies for weakness caused by the accident, and thus bring nearer to normalcy for the body.
19. (Q) For some time I have been taking regular Vite-Agar, and Quin B Complex tablets, both put up by The Freeda Pharmacy, 110 East 41st St., N.Y. Are these of benefit to me? (A) These are proving of benefit.
20. (Q) At times I feel tired and it is an effort to do a full day's work. How can I overcome this feeling and acquire more energy? (A) The conditions that produce this come from the fagged nerves and the depleted energies. Thus the vital energies produced in the body by the use of the products indicated are aiding. Yet, as indicated, those tendencies for slowing of the body-eliminations cause the toxic forces to produce this tiredness. Then, do not discontinue the properties taken, but use some hydrotherapy and electrotherapy - the combination of such. Do these and we will bring better conditions. Consider also those suggestions indicated as to the general welfare of the land. Keep that in mind. Let the service ever be a cooperative service for the general welfare of all.
