1. GC: You will have before you the situation which exists in Alabama due to the increase in Poliomyelitis (paralysis). A request for information which will aid in preventing or curing this disease has come through [630] of ..., Montgomery, Ala., a copy of request I hold in my hand. You will give a discourse on this disease, giving its cause, ways it is spread, proper methods of prevention and treatment in cases where it is attacking. Answer questions.

2. EC: Yes, this condition has been given before, on specific case. This [See 363-1 Par. R1] should be referred to.

3. In considering this dreaded disease, owing to the fatality, especially among the young, considerations will be given then to all phases of this disturbance.

4. From the very nature of the condition, the indications are as a whole that it (the inflammation as produced) is of the emunctory and lymph circulation.

5. Hence it is infectious as well as being able to be carried by persons, or is a carrier disease also.

6. And it arises from the condition that exists from what may be termed as BODY or bodily infectious.

7. When conditions are at a balance, where there is that effluvium that is thrown off through the circulation and the activity of the superficial circulation, these become irritated mostly by lack of perfect cleanliness. The infectious forces entering are also by the depleting of these particles or effluvia of the blood itself; which attack then the mucous membranes of throat, eyes, mouth and nasal passages, but may be absorbed by the emunctory centers - from the groin, under the arm, the knees, the elbow.

8. These are the sources then, these are the manners then of the infection, of the condition that arises - whether from contact or whether from the air.

9. As we find, then, this is of glandular INCEPTION; or is as indicated where there may be many in a household and only

a few in same become affected. It then needs be that the GLANDS of the same be more active than others. And there is then, as has been indicated, the greater possibility for the prevention, the stamping out of same, by the use of those properties in the system, upon the system, about the household where there is a CLEANSING for the glands, stimulation to the activity of the circulatory forces, and an antiseptic and a cleanser as well.

10. This as we find is better in that compound called Atomidine, as we have indicated. The sponge bath of same for the elders, for the nurse or for those about; especially the arms, the groin and portions of the body. A spray of a fifty percent solution of commercial strength for throat, nasal passages and the like. And the taking of same internally by those that apparently have been exposed to the conditions; one to two minims morning and evening - these to be taken in periods and then a rest period, and then take again. These will prevent, as we find, the greater inroads. These are the properties as we find that will combine with the system as in a GENERAL way and manner.

11. Ready for questions.

12. (Q) Is the spray of alum, picric acid, etc., which is being used extensively in Montgomery effective in preventing the disease, or is this spray harmful? (A) It would be found in some instances to be harmful. For the activity of the picric acid is effective to the mucous membranes, but the activity of the alum combined WITH same may close for other infectious forces that may later find a sympathetic reaction through the body. But where exposed, this is very good - for the whole of the emunctory circulation becomes engorged in its first inception.

13. (Q) Will you tell us more about the germ itself that causes this disease? (A) It has been given; it may be separated if it's looked for in the perspiration of those through which, where, it begins!

14. (Q) In using Atomidine in sponge bath, what proportions? (A) As has been given.
