Time of Reading 4:50 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. N.Y.C. (Body and enquiring mind - Questions concerning his mental and material affairs)
1. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [417] - this we have had before. Ready for questions.
2. (Q) Is this the proper time for the firm of [417] - [...] to move to new quarters? (A) As we would find, this would be the proper time to seriously consider the removal to new quarters, for there can be those arrangements that would better facilitate the whole of the business associations and relations, and make for savings - as well as being beneficial in other ways.
3. (Q) If a move is made, would 1375 or 1400 Broadway be the best building to move to? (A) 1375.
4. (Q) What would the limit of rent be for the firm of [...] to pay? (A) This should be considered from the amount of the output, and should not represent more than four to five, to six percent - see?
5. (Q) Is it advisable to continue in present price line and add another price line upon moving, or what is best advice in this regard? (A) We have had those suggestions as respecting the price and the lines, but with the removal, with the facilities that will be had in the removal, if this is done, if decided upon, would be well to continue in same AND add those lines as HAS been suggested!
6. (Q) The firm of [...] is now dickering about space on the 10th floor of 1400 Broadway. Would this be the advisable space to take, and how long a lease should be taken? (A) This would not be so WELL as the other, as we find, but - for this would mean a change very soon. [10/17/32 He wrote that he had made the change.]
7. (Q) Is there anything that can be done at this time to increase this business, and how should it be gone about? (A) In those centers where there may be a distribution of this line, this price line, particularly in those PORTIONS
417-4 Page 2
of the country as has been outlined, would be well for the considering of increasing the business and the output, see?
8. (Q) In my last business reading (417-3) on June 9th at Virginia Beach, what was meant by "it would be best to concentrate on the price line now being sold though there may be considered, as in the cutting - and in the needs of the using up of those as would be losses in some directions, in a way in other things as may be brought out to use this up?" (A) That, in the cutting there may be made those in the savings, or as the scraps from such, that there may be other lines considered for the SAVINGS of these, that have not been considered heretofore; as for those where certain styles or kinds of various articles may be made from scraps, or odds and ends, or those of various sizes in those for dressings of the doll, or the like, may be cut from those of the scraps and the like, and - seriously considered - may be made worth while.
9. (Q) Any other line that they can be used for, other than for dressing dolls? (A) As in ties, or as for RAGS as make for the weaving and the like - these may be to the last stitches, or even gathered up off the floor!
10. (Q) What is the future outlook for the firm of [417] - [...]? (A) This, as we find, while going through that same readjustment as many another such organization, may really be considered in a safer, saner position than many another. This, then, apparently, would make for a brighter outlook, and in the days to come a real PROSPEROUS business. [7/15/33 He wrote that he had sold his interest in the dress business.]
11. (Q) The lease on the body's shoe business in ... L.I., expires Jan. 1st, 1932, and is it advisable to renew this lease if it can be had? (A) We would.
12. (Q) If a long lease is gotten should the body go to the expense of an alteration on the building? (A) We would make some alterations as to the fronts, and as to some of those of the interior. Not to such an expense as to make it over-BURDENSOME to the business.
13. (Q) How can the body secure the finances to go through with the alteration and also enough moneys to induce the landlord to give a long lease? (A) This, as we find, may be had through those channels, even THROUGH which the landlord deals WITH those of the FINANCIAL institutions there.
14. (Q) What is the name of that institution? (A) Look at something for yourself and find where these
417-4 Page 3
are! for there will be some aid - this would be unexpected - from the landlord in this direction.
15. (Q) The business at this stand has fallen down 50% the past year and what can be done to bring it back to where it was or increase it? (A) The service in and with those of the PRESENTING same TO the public is the way and the manner to increase and to bring back the business.
16. (Q) Are the two men now running my shoe business during my absence the cause of poor business, and should a change be made? (A) We would make a change.
17. (Q) Which of the two should be changed? (A) We would change BOTH.
18. (Q) Is it advisable to take another store nearby, and what location would be best? (A) As we would find, the present location - with changes as may be had, and with the conditions as exist - these, or this, would be the better.
19. (Q) Would the adding of another store help or would it take up too much of my time from my Dress business? (A) We would not add an extra store.
20. (Q) The body is at a loss whether or not he should take a house for his home or an apartment? Which is advisable for the coming year? (A) In considering this from all angles, for there must be many considerations, would such advice be given in the way and manner as would be helpful, WE would find that as making the nearer the home is the better, the safer, the saner, the more satisfactory way and manner.
21. (Q) Would it help business to advertise? (A) Advertising pays in any direction!
22. (Q) (Continuing) 10% to unemployment? and what days of week would be best? (A) Mondays.
23. (Q) It would be advisable to do this? (A) It would be advisable to do this - Mondays the days.
24. (Q) Should the body send down South for a party named Miss Gay to take charge of his boy [758], or should someone be gotten in N.Y.? (A) The associations with the body Gay, those of the understandings of the relationships of the boy has been in a manner most satisfactory, and - as we find - would be the manner, or the CORRECT way of handling same. [See 758-33, Par. R1. Miss Gay, formerly a nurse at Cayce Hospital.] [GD's note: I think this Miss Gay was a sister of Mrs. T. Lea Brooks, Jr., wife of our local dentist.]

25. (Q) Are the priced lines now being sold in my shoe store all right, or should a change be made, and how? Higher or lower? (A) There has been a tendency in the past few years for one price in various portions of the country. With the changes as are IN the air, and as would be best to meet, as we find, we would consider rather that of a two-grade and a two-price. Make sufficient difference in same, so that there is SEEN the proper relationships, and - as WE would see - this would be answering many an inquiry as has been had, not only maintaining the class and kind, but meeting the needs in other directions.
26. (Q) Please explain more definitely regarding how the body can secure the finances in the alteration? (A) That is, through the financial conditions or situations with the landlord, these may be aided in securing the finances necessary for the alterations as would be needed.
27. (Q) The landlord could assist in this? (A) The landlord WILL assist.
28. (Q) Any other advice for the body regarding any of these? (A) If we will do these for the present, we will find there will be some obstacles at some places - but MEET these in the way and manner as is held in the thought of the body often, and will be well.
