1. GC: You will have before you the body and enquiring mind of [417], present in this room, who seeks information, advice and guidance in reference to the liquor business recommended for him yesterday through these sources. You will answer the questions he submits, as I ask them.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [417]; this we have had before, also that information which has been given respecting the engaging of the body's efforts in the manufacture or distribution of spirits vinous and malt liquors.
3. Ready for questions.
4. (Q) Is it meant that I should go into the liquor business for myself, or be employed, or be associated as a partner and associate? (A) It may mean any or all of these combined, as the conditions and developments arise. For, as we have given, this is to be one of the most active in the next few years of any business. To be sure, there will be required a large quantity of liquors, wines and such, to be imported for the general use, or demands for the stocking or furnishing of the requirements by the populace. And one engaged in the distribution, sale, association as distributor of individual brands or breweries, would be in the position to make a safe, sane and remunerative business. Hence, it may include all of these - as developments go. To be sure, as given on yesterday, those propositions made should be looked into; as to the general situations for the association of self with individuals that would be engaged in the sale of same, or those engaged in the distribution of such products would be well to consider; and that which
417-7 Page 2
offers to the body the better opportunity for the advancement in this line of endeavor should be chosen by the body. As indicated, there are those individuals (such as [335]) engaged in the manufacture in the present of malt liquors. And to get, obtain or associate self in the distribution of some of these for a given or a particular territory, or to be associated as the representative to make arrangements with importers or manufacturers of the various brands of spirits and the like, would be the channel through which, as we find, there is offered for the body at present the opportunity to be independent financially within the next eighteen months or two years.
5. (Q) Would it be best to sign up as a distributor instead of as a manufacturer, or both? (A) As a distributor in the beginning, with the privilege of or the proposition to be in the manufacturing and also. In the distributions of wines, including the California - which will make a large bid for general distributions. As for the native wines, or local wines, consider the advantages that may be had through the Pleasant Valley people in New York, where there were just the beginnings (as far as their abilities were concerned) when there was the change in the situations. For, these - because of their location and their abilities in certain characters of wines - will be ones to be reckoned with for the eastern trade!
6. (Q) Where are the Pleasant Valley people located? (A) It's Pleasant Valley, New York!
7. (Q) Just how should I become associated with [335]? (A) Either as a distributor of one of the brands or products (and with same in the present there may be the representing of the organization headed by [335], in the arranging for various distributing points throughout the country), or - even as intimated - necessity may demand that there be same arrangements personally made with the foreign or importing companies.
8. (Q) Should I go to [335] direct with the proposition? (A) Go to [335] direct. The first approach would be as the representative or distributor for the product of his manufacture, in the various places where these are beginning, for the distribution of these in certain given territories; as in eastern states, or Long Island, or in individual cities, or in Jersey, Delaware, Connecticut, or the like. See?
9. (Q) What is meant by your intimation that it would be necessary for me to go abroad in this connection? (A) It has just been given that there may be the
417-7 Page 3
possibility, with such an association that covers such a vast territory as planned by the body, that there be known more of the abilities of the importers to supply the demands; hence necessitating that the body [417] (in such association) go to such a place, see?
10. (Q) Any particular country? (A) This would be, of course, to where the greater wines are made. Switzerland, France or Spain.
11. (Q) When would be the right time to approach [335]? (A) The sooner the better; that is, when conditions are set. Of course, don't impose self in when other things interfere, but make the appointment for the CONSIDERATION of such things, see? for, he is seeking the RIGHT men to represent him, as well as the body may be seeking an association!
12. (Q) What firm could I contact to get the exclusive agency for beer barrels? (A) These are of a nature or condition that is rather hard for consideration, for there are many that are entering in, or are just beginning to make a specialty of these products at this time. The situation that exists respecting the necessary requirements for these is rather a peculiar one. Hence, to have an individual concern that would be that for which the body would be the representative would be something of a problem. Be well were there sought out the various plants that are equipped for the manufacturing of such products. Then approach through these channels again, with asking which ones would be the better to represent. Then the situations may be covered. Because, as given, in many portions of the country - both the north, east, south, west, central, and all of these - they are attempting such work, many on a shoestring, as it were; many on a very depleted character of machinery; many attempting it, of course, with insufficient amount of funds, many with very incomplete machinery for the carrying on. Hence there is a diffusion of conditions, you see. But, there are some very good places, though apparently small at present in their ability to supply; as in Tyrone, Pennsylvania, as in some smaller towns in Ohio and some in Michigan. In the immediate vicinity or district of Tyrone, Pennsylvania, central portion, you see, near Cleversburg - yes, Cleversburg, or Leechburg - there is a very good center for such things, and better equipment than many (as far as timber is concerned, and the necessary preparations).
13. (Q) Give name of concern at Cleversburg.
417-7 Page 4
(A) This will be seen in the registrations that are necessary in the manufacture of this particular character of product.
14. (Q) Would the Forces give me a recipe for the following, that would be superior to any now being offered? Rye, Bourbon, Scotch, or Wines. (A) Many of these, in the manner in which they are produced at the present time, are what may be termed the property of those that are making same. To change such formulas, or to give formulas for such that would be superior, would be rather the going into not only the chemical end but there would be required a great deal of output of moneys for the investigation or experimentation. But these, as we find, may be given. The true product will be found, after the first six months, to be superior in sale, in production, to the blended stocks; though the blended in the first six to twelve months will be the greater sale owing to the inability of many of the brewers or distributors to obtain other than that! Hence those that stock or prepare themselves for the STRAIGHT GOODS in any of these will be those that will be on the safer grounds.
15. (Q) Would it be advisable at this time to purchase a carload of wine from Mr. Rosenthal of California, with whom I spoke two weeks ago? (A) Be excellent, and may be more than doubled in the moneys.
16. (Q) Would it be advisable to buy it in bulk of [or?] bottled? (A) In bulk would make the more money.
17. (Q) Would it be wise to go into the bottling business, for bottling beer and wines, with Mr. Gottersfeld of Jamaica, L.I.? (A) Be very good if too much time is not required, and if there can be the whole confidence put in the associations in same.
18. (Q) Does the bottling business require a permit? (A) It does.
19. (Q) How should I go about to obtain one? (A) Through the regular channels, which is obtained from the government itself, and then also that which may be imposed by the State.
20. (Q) What would be a good name to give our brand of wine, bottled by us? (A) That which represents the character of product itself would be well. If a particular kind or character is represented, the name of the manufacturer of that character
417-7 Page 5
of wine would be the better name. That is, under the name of your bottling or manufacturing concern, put the name of the character or kind of wine. This would make it an individual brand, of course, which would increase as the product supplies the demand for that particular character of product.
21. (Q) Would it be advisable to put up a Christmas package of assorted wines? (A) Be excellent. For, strong liquor may be sold by Christmas, or before, in many portions of the country, to all of those who have prepared themselves; that is, the States where there may be distribution. And there will be no trouble, of course, in transposition into any of the States!
22. (Q) What is your impression of the American Package being arranged by Mike Gans and his company? (A) We don't get anything here.
23. (Q) He is of 125 W. 45th St., N.Y. City. (A) Just fair.
24. (Q) Is it worth considering? (A) Wine package might be made much more attractive, and much better sale, as we find.
25. (Q) Has he got the proper formulas for making wine? (A) Best formulas in this country are those that may be obtained from the Pleasant Valley people, for these are natives of Switzerland, France and Germany! and this is the valley where so many grapes are grown, where their sauterne and dry wine has little under the very best Madeira or Rhine either!
26. (Q) You mentioned in yesterday's reading about my efforts with Mike Gans in connection with the larger distributors. How can that be accomplished? (A) This is rather confusing with some of the suggestions that we have given for the activities, if this channel is chosen - which we wouldn't advise. However, if the connections are made with the larger distributors, then you might be of benefit to Gans and associates - for the association of the body in connections with others.
27. (Q) Is it advisable at this time to try and secure the agency of Long Island for Pickwick ale now being manufactured by Heffenraffer of Boston? (A) Be very good time.
28. (Q) Would it be advisable to connect with and represent ale manufacturer in Sayville, Long Island? (A) We would prefer, as we find, those that are outside of Long Island for the distributing in Long Island.
29. (Q) Would it be wise to see Budweiser or Schlitz on this?
417-7 Page 6
(A) As we find, some of those through the ones we have given would be even better than these; as to representatives and plants.
30. (Q) Would it be advisable to connect with a Canadian concern for the distributing of Canadian ale? (A) Be excellent. Through those in Montreal and the adjoining vicinities.
31. (Q) Who would you advise me to see? What company? (A) These may be found through those same classifications of distributors, whose activities are recorded in the various provinces. And, as we have given, it should be those about Montreal, or in Montreal.
32. (Q) If I start to manufacture liquor, I would like to start with a formula that would be superior. Would the rye liquor be a good one? (A) This depends upon whether this is to a blend or a straight. And, as we have given, this would require considerable investigation, as it were, and we may give this further, later, than the present time.
33. (Q) Any further suggestions in regard to the liquor business? (A) From the information that has been given, do not confuse self. Either in associations or to the extent of the activities of the body in this direction. As a final warning, or admonition: Look over the whole situation in all of its phases and approaches. Consider both the sale (direct, see) and the representing or distributing of certain brands (that might be made, or that might be that manufactured by other groups), and CHOOSE - then - that which seemeth the BEST proposition under the existent circumstances and conditions. And then we may aid in giving that which may be a definite brand, or definite mode or manufacture. But choose first.
34. (Q) In regard to horse racing, please explain how you find - or figure - that 3, 7 and 5 will be the winners this coming week? (A) This coming three days, as given. It was explained how the numbers run in each race. This is figured from the horses that are at this time set to start. And these numbers are paralleled with the owners or the jockeys with same. There is more than one race in each day, see? But these numbers in their order, or reversed; that is, it may be seven in the first and three in the others, see?
417-7 Page 7
But these numbers in the races - when the whole number of seven is started - which is to the higher numbers - sometimes as many as eight or nine are figured to start, when not ALL start, see? But these numbers, as we find, would be played either together, or to end, or to second, or to place.
