Time of Reading ... St., Apt. ..., 3:20 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York, N.Y.

1. GC: You will have before you an association of [437] and Edward Small, both present at offices ..., New York City, Room ... Please advise [437] as to their business association and best line of procedure to successfully establish themselves and answer the questions which he has submitted, as I ask them.

2. EC: Yes, we have those conditions and circumstances that surround such an association. In part we have had these circumstances, or the perspective of the circumstances, before. As for the associations, the purposes, the aims, these have in part been set forth through those agreements that have been contemplated and made respecting same. The purposes, aims, desires, that are set forth, these are well. The abilities of each in their particular field of endeavor, considering their associations, their abilities in the many directions, should insure - under ordinary circumstances - the success of the undertaking. Inasmuch as the surroundings, the conditions, the times, are unusual, so will it require that there be more activities on the part of each in those specific and direct directions to insure the proper hearing, the proper understanding; else the conditions would be found to become hard to cope with, should there be made any radical changes in the policies that have been considered tentatively and specifically as those to be followed, but once insured, and the assurance of the producer of the productions' acceptations in their varied associations, will insure the success almost from the beginnings.

3. Ready for questions.

4. (Q) Is Edward Small qualified as the proper person to be my partner in ... Pictures, Inc? (A) Will prove to be trustworthy, so long as the policies are adhered to that have been agreed upon. When there are the tendencies for these policies to become of little value, or stretched in either direction too much, then such an

437-5 Page 2

association would become UNBEARABLE. Hence the necessity that these be followed in the way that has been set.

5. (Q) What division of business is he best adapted and qualified for? (A) In that of the production end.

6. (Q) What arrangements necessary now to insure a happy and successful partnership? (A) That the policies will be adhered to that have brought about this association.

7. (Q) What especial advice on arrangements, contracts, etc? (A) Those that have been set forth in the policies thus far would be well to adhere to. These will insure the relationships to be the most congenial, amiable, and satisfactory.

8. (Q) Should we sign lease on Suite No. ... at ...? (A) With the outlay that is being considered, while this at a time will appear as to be an extravagance in one respect, in others will be found to be necessary. We would say, well.

9. (Q) For how long? (A) For three years.

10. (Q) Do we vibrate properly here numerologically and psychologically? (A) It's well!

11. (Q) Are there any other associates we should consider at this time to perfect our organization? (A) These should be sufficient for the inner organization in the present. When there are those periods (and keep it as such) of necessity of expansion in associations, these will be well to be considered - but the policy that BROUGHT ABOUT the association should be kept in the forefront of ALL negotiations as regarding the association and its work.

12. (Q) What special branch of the picture industry should ... Pictures, Inc., cater to? (A) That which is of the more constructive nature in its finale, or in its lesson.

13. (Q) What field in merchandising should we plan for immediate business? (A) Those that would act as fills for those of the educational program.

14. (Q) Should we distribute independently or through National organizations? (A) Are the products such that they may be considered by the National organizations as they are being produced, then these will be found to be the better channels for distribution. While some independent organizations may offer at periods or times the greater, or greater possibilities for, financial gain, those of the SAFER will be through the

437-5 Page 3

National organizations.

15. (Q) If National organization is best, which one? (A) These should be kept not as wholly open, but that they may be considered by more than one - and those that make the best offer AFTER the second production would be the better.

16. (Q) What will be best type of picture to make first? (A) That of the appeal to the times, that is so lacking in the pictural or pictorial industry in the present. That is, that type that makes for that which is being sought as remedies for the various conditions that confront individuals, groups, classes and masses, at the present time. Not the wholly sensational; but sensational at times in its daring.

17. (Q) Who would be best director for us to engage, considering our present financial set-up? (A) Some that have been considered would be well to be kept in those associations in the beginnings. As those that are not of the OLD school, as it may be termed; nor of the ultra-conservative; nor yet the ultra-altruistic - but those that have shown, and do show, by that which has BEEN produced, the abilities in the direction of the policies that would be assumed by this association. Of the Crews type, or the like.

18. (Q) What price pictures should we endeavor to make? (A) Not those of the higher, nor yet of the lower order or type. That which will appeal to the masses, that are seeking an answer to problems of everyday life, that appeal to more of the spiritual - though not ULTRA-altruistic.

19. (Q) Where best to make our first picture? (A) That should be chosen from, or for, the setting of the character or type of picture first considered. It may be done in Long Island, or it may be done in Jersey, or in the West. WE would prefer those in the East.

20. (Q) Please give us the thesis or the basis for a scenario which would cause a sensation in pictures today. (A) This would require a reading of itself, rather than in this - for these would come from other channels.

21. (Q) Would the book "If Christ came to Chicago", written by Wm. Stead and published in 1894, be a good subject for our best advantage? (A) Would be well to be considered in the present, this type, this characterization, if properly set up. Do not make it such as to become harmful to those that would consider such picturization as being blasphemous in its subject. Rather in the line or type of that, "IF such - " - which is characterized in the picture or book itself, and may be made into scenario form so as to be BEAUTIFUL in its

437-5 Page 4

aspect - this, then, would be very much worth while.
