Time of Reading 3:15 to 3:45 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.
1. HLC: You will have before you the entity, enquiring mind, of [437]; present in this room; and his associates, connections and associations relative to the production of the motion picture "The American Way." You will answer the questions which he has prepared, considering all of these connections as well as the trend of American thought and need for this production.
2. EC: Yes, we have the entity, the enquiring mind, [437]; this we have had before.
3. As respecting those conditions, circumstances, connections and problems in the production "The American Way." much might be said - especially as to the needs of such ideals and ideas being presented to the American public in the present.
4. While such should not in itself be in the nature of propaganda AS propaganda (as has been indicated), it should be of the nature as to arouse the awareness in the experiences of the American public as to their advantages and their problems.
5. This IS timely, as well as - in the main - the NEED of the public in the present: and, in the way and manner that is being attempted as a policy, should be MOST beneficial in EVERY way and manner.
6. Ready for questions.
7. (Q) Comment on the present plan and procedure for having 40 Industrial Companies spend $18,000 each for a page advertisement in a manual of The American Way to be distributed in connection with the showing of the picture. (A) The idea, as we find, is a most laudable one. To be sure, there are problems connected with same. Many such organizations or industries have regular channels through which their advertising, or budget of advertising, is already placed. TO such, then, this presents or becomes a real problem; unless there are the needs or the conditions

represented by the production of such a movie presented to those who have the authority to make FUTURE contributions FOR a definite thing or purpose! But, as we find, there has been sufficient interest evinced BY those approached to justify the entity in pushing and carrying this forward. Then, in the approach to others, do not forget that it - the movie - is to that organization a SAFEGUARD for problems that may become a real problem, WITHOUT the awareness in the experience of each American.
8. (Q) As each of the following names is called, comment on the possibilities and best method of approaching him with this proposition; indicating in each case if possible the proper individual to make the contact and through whom it could best be made. First - Thomas McInery, [Thomas McInnerney] National Dairy Products? (A) In this we find that there are already associations which only need the crystallizing of the idea and ideal being presented, or to be presented in the movie, for there to be the ready acceptance of this proposition.
9. (Q) Colby M. Chester, General Foods? (A) Here we have, as we find, quite a different problem; yet we will find that this, too, with the second or third approach, will be possible - through the connection through which one of the products is handled. This would be through one of the food products - that is, a breakfast food - just being presented.
10. (Q) Would Rabbi Wm. Rosenblum be helpful in this connection? (A) Well - it would be necessary first to sell the idea to Rabbi Rosenblum, and then he would be helpful.
11. (Q) Floyd Odlum, Atlas Company? (A) We do not find this so well; though, with the other organizations indicating their willingness to assist, there may be that of pressure brought to bear. But we would leave this toward the last. We would begin rather to move in on the first two mentioned, see?
12. (Q) Sidney Weinberg, Goldman-Sachs? (A) Here we find there needs be only a sincere presentation of the POSSIBILITIES, as well as to that would be the PROBABLE return - through the policies being established. This we would present by [437] himself!
13. (Q) William Dunn, Manufacturers trust? (A) Here, we find, is a problem of this Nature: This entity or body, William Dunn, can be used to induce OTHERS, - rather than inducing William Dunn! He's a character!
437-11 Page 3
14. (Q) Harvey Gibson, Manufacturers Trust? (A) Well, use William Dunn - but sell the idea to William Dunn - as on the basis purely of the GOOD to the nation as a whole, or as of the BASIC problem of national ECONOMIC defense! For, THAT is the manner to approach BOTH of these individuals. But with the first, the second may be brought into the picture as a real help.
15. (Q) Thomas Girdler, Republic Steel? (A) Here you have rather a hard nut to crack! Here is another that it would be best to leave toward the last, - possible not so late or so far off as the other suggested; but he will be rather as one that follows others, then making up his own mind. Hence, while it would be well to present the problem or the possibilities in the beginning, it will take him a long time to make up his mind.
16. (Q) Paul Garrett, General Motors? (A) Here is a problem where you must sell someone else on the idea as associated with General Motors, and the problem there will outreach others. Sell the idea to Kettering!
17. (Q) Are there other individuals or industries that may be considered as key men to be approached first? (A) Those of every form that are represented in the manufacture or distribution of those products that enter into NATIONAL defense - as even those of the bi-products from the munitions. For, these - in the first - need to do something constructive for their consciences' sake; and many of them realize same. All of those in all phases of the industries here should be approached; especially, as we find, the munitions and their products and bi-products will be the easier ones; though they may appear to be the unapproachables in the present.
18. (Q) Which DuPont best to see? (A) Don't go to a DuPont, but to the agents of these that handle the various plants of same. It will eventually COME to this, for a greater consideration. For, here you'll have three of these taken rather than one!
19. (Q) Are there any suggestions and counsel for working with and through the following, in this proposition: First, - Manney Strauss? (A) This, as we find, would be rather - We would analyze for the entity, [437], the problems to be met in these individuals. For, they - as indicated from the list here - offer quite a different character or position of individuality and personality. Here you find one already desiring to be of help, and yet

not entirely sold on the returns that may be had for producing or supplying portions of the money. Yet as we find, these points may be easily ironed out and the good, full cooperation gained.
20. (Q) Mrs. [2090]? (A) Just let her keep at it! She's doing very well!
21. (Q) Is there any way [257] may be of assistance in this project on his trip to California? (A) Just by speaking a good word, with an introduction here and there. For, as IS the ideal here, this - when produced - should be ALREADY upon the tongue of four-fifths of the populace of the country. Self, then, may act in the introduction to the idea. For, as ideas grow they may become crimes or miracles; dependent upon that impetus given them in the minds of those seeking to give EXPRESSION to same.
22. (Q) Could or should the National Government be interested in this production in any way, and if so through what agency and individual is it best to make the approach? (A) Through WALLACE, and it may be approached easily!
23. (Q) What is the best approach to make? (A) In describing the needs of such at the present time, there is to be the analyzing first of the situation that exists in America, in all of its various phases that are depicted or shown in the script, or that being drawn itself. If it would be permissible, we would offer a suggestion here as to the script; not as to tell the writer as to what or how to change, but - we would give a bit more in some lines here of those words of Jefferson in the FOUNDING of this American way. Then, as these are presented to this entity in these special lines, but the whole - there would be indicated that a contribution to the general WELFARE of America is to AROUSE it to not only its faults, its failures, but its problems, its duties and its obligations! And you will receive not only favorable comment, but help! Keep this away FROM the other industries, to be sure; not as if you are hiding something or other, but that it - as America - must stand as a unit, as ONE, in the final analysis.
24. (Q) Who should make this approach? (A) There are those who are associated or connected with the entity [437] in Washington, close to the present administration. Let them step in and tell.
437-11 Page 5
25. (Q) Comment on the possibilities of the success of this project? (A) As we find, as has first been indicated - it is not merely an idea, but an IDEAL manner in which to arouse America, the public in general, to the situations, the problems that exist; and the manner, the means, the WAY of correcting and making amends. That of itself bespeaks not only of the manner of success but, naturally, the problems - for the moment - of attaining same, by united effort of many CHANNELS of endeavor. But as we find - never losing sight of the purpose; that is, as a WAY or means of PATRIOTIC effort for the love of country and of people - it will succeed.
26. We are through - for the present. Copy to Self " " Ass'n file " " [257] " [257]
