1. GC: You will have before you the entity, [641], present in this room, who seeks information, advice and guidance as to his life and work. Considering the stage which has been reached in his associations with the firm [[412]'s etc.], and the probable effect upon this firm of general world conditions, you will advise him as to the course of action he should now take for his best interests and greater development. In particular, please advise specifically whether it would be best for him to remain on the road as a salesman or seek to obtain a position in the home office (as formerly indicated through this channel), or sever his associations with the [412]'s and seek connections for the better use of his abilities elsewhere. You will answer the questions he submits, as I ask them:
2. EC: Yes, we have the enquiring mind of [641] - this we have had before; also those associations and connections with [412]...
3. In considering advice and counsel in these directions, to be sure many things and many conditions as may arise must be taken into consideration.
4. And under the existent circumstance, the advice that might be given in the present may be altered or changed by circumstance as may arise in the experience of [641] - as well as in the experience of some of those in the corporation of [412]'s.
5. But, these are conditions as we find them in the present:
6. The activities WILL be continued. And there will be given some consideration in priorities as related to the corporation - owing to the character and nature of those needs for supplies.
7. As we find, it would be better to consider, at least in the present, the part time associations in the office. For, while some curtailments will be necessary in the scope of activities of the organization, the connections that have been established, the conditions which exist, should all be
641-8 Page 2
taken into consideration.
8. We would advise, then, the consideration of at least part time in the office activities.
9. Ready for questions.
10. (Q) Would it be wise for me to insist upon the full payment now of all commissions due me? (A) It would be wide to consider as to the prorations of such, at least. This will depend, of course, upon what IS to be taken into consideration with the new associations or activities. But it would be well to reach some conclusions and some specified times be indicated as to when such payments are to be made. As to demands for IMMEDIATE payment - this might cause some disruptions that would produce some antagonisms. But it would be well that these be prorated, at least, and that there is the perfect understanding - not merely in words but in agreement or contract.
11. (Q) What should be my manner of approach or action, and to which of the three [412]'s, to accomplish this? (A) That one who is considered in charge, to be sure, - [[412]'s brother], is the one with whom complete agreement must be reached. But there is to be kept, of course, the same attitude as related to all connections or those connected with same; and to be kept on even terms with all connected with same.
12. (Q) When would be the best time for me to go to N.Y. to accomplish the settlement of commission? (A) This should be begun as or before there is a great deal more of activities in making contracts, other than that already in formation.
13. (Q) If I seek a position in the home office, which of the three [412]'s should I approach, and in what manner, to bring about my obtaining a position in the home office? (A) That one as indicated, considered in charge of production for the whole organization.
14. (Q) Of the various phases of work in the sales department, in which should I seek to be engaged - such as correspondence with prospective customers or agents and salesmen, shipping, advertising, handling of exhibits, or others? (A) As we find, the connections between the users and the organization itself; or the handling of the customers.
15. (Q) Is there any new activity I could introduce in this connection which would be an asset to the firm? (A) When all the various phases and problems are considered that are to be met, in the making or the closing of sales, - these problems and the manners of handling same would be
641-8 Page 3
well to be the phases to be considered in most of the approach, the discussion and activity with the organization.
16. (Q) What salary would be proper for my services in the home office? (A) This should be considered from self, not from here.
17. (Q) Should I expect or endeavor to get a continued commission during this next year on business coming from accounts in my territory, in addition to my salary? if so, how much? (A) If it's part time, to be sure this part is to be taken into consideration. And if there is the ability by the handling of the correspondence and the necessary requirements to obtain such in the field, all such must be taken into consideration; but should be specifically specified in the agreements for whatever remuneration is to be made for the office OR the general sales service.
18. (Q) Would it be advisable to accept living quarters in the [412] home (if offered), or would it be best to live in the city near the office - if so, where? (A) In the home if it is practical - be much safer, as will be seen later.
19. (Q) Should I insist upon a definite commission and working arrangement which would include a closed territory, allowing me commission on all orders which come in from my territory, and a more satisfactory rate of commission or an additional expense account above my present commission? (A) This will depend entirely upon the basis of the agreement as to office AND the added work with agents, or the offices through which such orders are to be received. If the body is to remain entirely on the road, then this would be a different proposition, see? It would be well to consider the expense, or the increased amount as to the commission granted.
20. (Q) How may I meet and overcome the difficulties and increased cost of travelling due to National Defense efforts? (A) As indicated, all of these things have to be taken into consideration and thus the necessary changes in the policies and manners as will be necessitated very soon - and why it is indicated that there should be in the very near future the NEEDED associations closely in the office, with those activities outside made as part time. And these are the better ways to meet same.
21. (Q) In each season of the coming year, on what parts of my territory should I concentrate? (A) This again will depend upon the manner or the FORM of agreements that are reached by the activity of the body, see? For, being in the office, and with the various needs or
641-8 Page 4
requests that arise, there will be the necessity naturally to meet them in the ways in which time or circumstance will bring about in the experience.
22. (Q) Which design, or designs, in our present catalogue should be stressed during the coming year, and why? (A) More of the military design is to be stressed, to be sure. These will be more in conformity with the natural conditions and circumstances as they arise.
23. (Q) What types of materials, which will be available during the coming year, will give the best satisfaction and thereby should be stressed? (A) This too, of course, will be found necessary to change as the seasons progress. But it will be those that are more in keeping with the products produced wholly within the United States itself, see?
24. (Q) Would it be possible and satisfactory to develop and secure plastic buttons, emblems, buckles, etc., to substitute for metal articles now being used in manufactured uniforms? (A) They are already under consideration and will be part of the changes as will be wrought.
25. (Q) What should I do to bring about more sympathetic and constructive understanding on the part of the [412]'s and myself regarding the problems of each of us? (A) Meet them in the same manner as they would have them met in one another. These are the basis of most of the activities here, and may be brought in proper coordinating activity if there is the attempt or the desire on the part of each to meet things as they arise.
26. (Q) How should I invest my commissions as they are paid to me? (A) In that which is of the real estate nature is the better. [See 641-8, Par. R1.]
27. (Q) Any further advice that would be helpful, in regard to any phase of my life and activity? (A) Remember, as has been indicated, circumstances and varied conditions as may be met in self's own experience or in those associated in the organization may change all of these entirely. But, these are the problems to be met in the present. With charity to all, with integrity and love, keep in the way ye know to go.
