1. EC: Yes, we have the body, [852].
2. As we find, conditions are changed from that as we have had here before. There is a great improvement in many ways, yet we find that it will require precautions and patience in making for these conditions where the resuscitating forces are made to perform in a normal way and manner.
3. In the present we find these conditions exist:
4. There are still some signs of the inflammation (although somewhat in abeyance) throughout the intestinal tract, as well as in the lower end of the stomach itself now.
5. We find that the inflammation or the condition causing some distress at times through the chest area is not of the chest; it is more of the lower portion of the esophagus and the upper portion of the plexus of the secondary cardiac area. This makes for that heaviness, and an acute pain at times in the area of the heart. It is a nervous condition and a reaction, but not an organic disturbance.
6. The weakness naturally arises from the suffering, as well as the strain produced by same upon the nervous system.
7. We would, then, in the present, leave off ALL treatments as heretofore indicated and follow along THESE lines in keeping with the conditions (including a portion of what has already been indicated):
8. First we would begin with the rubs over the chest and especially over the lower portion of the ribs, over the heart area and at the end of the sternum or at the cardiac area - the end of the breastbone here, you see, between the ribs or at the end of the ribs, over the stomach area. Such rubs would be with equal parts of Mutton Tallow, Spirits of Turpentine, Spirits of Camphor and Compound Tincture of Benzoin; massaged in the FRONTAL portion of the body, you see.
9. Then, after this has been applied, apply the violet ray over the area from the 5th dorsal to the base of the brain.
852-8 Page 2
Not too long, a period of a minute to a minute and a half.
10. This will at first cause some little disturbance with the stomach, or a feeling of nausea again; but this will gradually pass off and will be materially aided through these applications in six to eight hours after they have been begun.
11. About once each day, preferably in the evening, apply the Grape Poultice still; OVER the liver, the upper portion of the stomach - let it extend up to the lower portion of where the rubs are made and over those areas on both the liver area side and the descending colon side, to the lower portion of the abdomen.
12. We would leave off the Alcaroid, unless there begins again to be the emit or vomiting from foods.
13. The enemas we would have about every other day, using in these now the Soda and Salt; not so great a quantity of same. Let the enemas be rather for the cleansing and the preventing of the accumulations or the setting up again of inflammation through the intestinal tract.
14. We would begin with a very small quantity often of the Beef Juice; this not seasoned too much, but a very small quantity or sip of same. This may be given every hour, or until there is a satisfying.
15. We would continue at times to give the orange juice with the FRESH grape juice. This will be nourishing.
16. Red wine with brown or black bread, soaked in same, would be well - or "dunked", as some would call it. Very little. The sipping or sucking of same, swallowing - though - a portion of the bread. This about once each day.
17. We would continue with the alcohol rubs, especially over the lower portion of the spinal column but extending on higher along the back, to about the 6th and 7th dorsal, or just below where the application of the violet ray is given after the rubs over the chest.
18. Mind that there is no chance of cold or congestion in any portions of the system.
19. The rubbing of the limbs with the alcohol would be well, though we find this would be better following an Olive Oil rub - over the limbs and especially the feet, close in the groin, following along the sciatic nerve.
20. About once a day or once in every other day should be sufficient for the osteopathic manipulations. And these should be of a general nature, coordinating more the locomotory plexus now, you see; that is, the upper dorsal or through the brachial area. Not too heavy in the cervical, but coordinating those with the lumbar plexus, the brachial plexus, and of course gently this should be given, to keep
852-8 Page 3
drainages, to also keep FROM any congestion in any of the plexus from which the stomach, the kidneys, the liver obtain their impulse from the cerebrospinal nerve system.
21. Do this. Ready for questions.
22. (Q) How long should the Grape Poultice be kept on each evening? (A) Until it has heated sufficient to be inactive.
23. (Q) The Mutton Tallow rub and violet ray applied once a day? (A) Applied once or twice, if there is the recurrent condition. Not on the first day would we apply it twice anyway; but may be better after there has been one of the general OSTEOPATHIC relaxations.
24. (Q) How long before any other nourishment may be given? (A) This will gradually be increased. And the next would be added in arrowroot, junket, and things of that kind. Not the milk as yet, but malted milk with burned whiskey in same will be very well a little later. Not too much at the time, but may be given often to satisfy the appetite and make for the strength. After the second or third day of these applications, we should have an evening or night of almost complete rest throughout. And then we will see improvements much faster; provided there is not any setback through other conditions that are not apparent at present.
25. (Q) In giving the enemas should the Glyco-Thymoline be added at all now? (A) Glyco-Thymoline should always be used, or SOME intestinal antiseptic. Glyco-Thymoline taken internally would not be amiss for the body; not over five to six drops - this of course in water. This may be taken once a day, or once in every day or two. Five or six drops in a teaspoonful of water.
26. (Q) All internal medicines should be discontinued, then? (A) Unless there are other conditions that arise.
