1. GC: You have before you the body and enquiring mind of [943], present in this room, seeking information regarding the merits and the practical general use of a formula, owned by H. O. Bernstrom, 11 Whitford Avenue, Nutley (Newark), N.J., for manufacturing soap products, principally, from Irish potatoes. Advise fully if the formula is correct in every detail. You will answer the questions I will ask regarding this formula.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [943], also those conditions as surround the practicability of the formula as making soap. As we find, this is almost a practical formula, one that will work, will there be the proper preparations made for conversion of the elements in the potatoes for use in this way and manner. We will find, that rather than with the use of acids or alkalins, other than in only sufficient quantities for the dissolving of the elements, are the oils used properly, these would make rather a practical and a cheap way of using much that has been, or is, waste material. Much consideration, too, will be given as respecting the characterization of the soils through which, or of which, such are grown. Ready for questions.
3. (Q) Give name of individual, or individuals, and where they are to be located, who will furnish funds to form a corporation to market these products? (A) Better work with that that's already in hand! There will be the necessity of the completing of the formula into a practical, workable, basis, with the products showing results in the fields of endeavor, for the interesting of capital to be used in such on a large scale. Use that already as has been contacted, or used, for the first developing of same.
4. (Q) What should be the name of the manufacturing company, and where should the company be located? (A) As to the name, that can best be determined by those that would supply that of either the capital or the product.

As to the location, best that same be where the distributing of the product is as the least, and where that necessary for the PRODUCING of the product is most easily obtained.
5. (Q) Would Norfolk be a good location? (A) The soil, or soils, about that particular vicinity would lend itself to the proper ratio of the starches and the oils as come from such, that would be used in the product. Hence would be a good location, both as for distribution and for the product, or composition product of same.
6. (Q) Give a name for each of the products to be made under this formula. (A) These had best be in line with that each product is to do in its respective field, with a basis or an ELEMENTAL name, with the others signifying their relative relations to same, see? As may be chosen from that as has already been contemplated, or suggested, adding onto same any of a line of letters that INDICATE its - the product's - own particular use.
7. (Q) How should these products be put on the market and give instructions in detail as to the better method? (A) There are many ways to consider the distribution of, or marketing of, such products. These are, as we find, to be considered in relationships to existent conditions in various portions of the country where same may be distributed. As WE would find, the best manner would be the house to house distribution, and orders, and demonstrations, with making some central point as the distributor of, and WITH the requests or demands for the products this would make a gradual growth, with the product itself paying for and meeting the needs of the distribution as it goes - see? As would be, take some particular territory, with group or individuals acting as house to house distributors or demonstrators, and with the orders as would ensue from same make or have a central distributing point for same. This at once cares for individual needs, the middle man or the local distributor, with the central or wholesale distributor, all in one. This also may be done with such a product in the most economical way and manner, rather than that of - as is ordinarily considered - large amounts used as samples, that are given or sent out, or made as trials or tests; but rather go direct to the consumer for the distribution of same.
8. (Q) Which of these products should be made the leader? (A) The one that is the greater household necessity.
9. (Q) Is now the proper time to establish such a company? (A) When there is an exceptional, good product,
943-16 Page 3
economically made, meeting many of the needs and necessities of situations or conditions, ANY time would be a good time for the establishing of such; for it meets the needs of many conditions, supplying for the producer an outlet, supplying to the user a product economically produced and meeting many needs and conditions as are existent.
10. (Q) Any other information that could be given now that would be of benefit? (A) Each product as it is providing the necessary outlets is to be considered in its various spheres, see? so that each are given their opportunity for the better DEVELOPMENT in their only, and own, particular field of usefulness AS a product - see?
11. (Q) What other soils would be adaptable, other than that around Norfolk? (A) Any of those that are particularly of the coastal ranges, rather than internal; for the potash is the lower in these, and the iron content higher.
12. (Q) How much money would be necessary to start this? (A) That would depend upon the scale upon which the activity is to be begun. From ten to fifteen thousand should be sufficient in the beginning.
