Time of Reading 3:50 to 4:15 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Body and enquiring mind, who seeks information, advice and guidance as to the best procedure in manufacturing and marketing her product called Furfluf. Ques.)
1. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [1000]; this we have had before.
2. Ready for questions.
3. (Q) Application for method of treating fur was allowed by Patent Office thusly:- A method of Fur Treatment which consists in working a comminuted relatively soft fibrous material impregnated with a glazing agent such as casein, and a pest control of germicidal agent such as phenol, also a hide softener, and comprising shredded leather and ground cork and manually combing same through fur. Is this satisfactory? (A) This as we find is in keeping with the manner in which that treatment or application is made, and thus should be and is as we find satisfactory.
4. (Q) Before final papers are signed, my attorney, John Hubbel of 8 W. 40th St., N.Y.C., advises patenting formula in conjunction with Process patent. Is the information received from Forces heretofore not to patent formula still the same, or is there other advice needed, as I follow the Readings? (A) As we have given, and as has been indicated through these channels, this will require making records of the use of the various products in such a manner that it would make it easy for others to copy, alter or change same in such a manner that the efficacy or the real value would be hindered from becoming the great proposition that it might; unless great quantities of money are used in the beginning, for the preparation and the exploiting or sale of same. However, if there are those possibilities or that abilities for the attorney to so arrange that this would NOT be a portion of the records, very well to patent same. But that as already allowed, as we find, is sufficient.
5. (Q) As a past control agent for moths, etc. seems to be a very important factor, advise what is necessary - phenol,
1000-20 Page 2
or another germicidal agent that will not stain, and how should same be added to do the most good? (A) As we find the phenol is the better and the less susceptible for the changing or the affecting with the other products; though as has been indicated in all such operative forces and activities these to be sure are to be tested. For as will be found, and as has been indicated in the information given heretofore, furs treated under different processes or activities or under various conditions or activity at certain seasons, or treated under certain characters of activity in the dye and the like, will be found to need a variation somewhat in their application of treatment - if the product is continuously to be used for the cleansing of same. All of these should be taken into consideration, and hence a great deal of testing made as to the various types and characters of furs used in the processes, and that characterization of those products that would be applied or used in the Furfluf as a preventative in that direction.
6. (Q) Which is the better for Furfluf? - Casein - or dissolved Chinese bark and in either case when should same be added and in what proportion? (A) Again, as has just been indicated, this as we find requires experimentation - owing to the very nature or character of the things indicated heretofore, see? These as we find, though - the Casein - would be preferable; for this so far as the cost of same and the time of application would be preferable; but as to its mixture with the product, the quantity and when, must again be tested.
7. (Q) As corn was not patentable can this be eliminated from Furfluf and not diminish its worth? (A) This may be diminished if there is used sufficient quantity of the leather, or combining the leather and the cork for the caring for or preserving of same. And as we find, now, with that use of the other products, it may be made more in order - or better keeping qualities in same.
8. (Q) Are the briar shavings now being used the cause of slight stain when damp cloth is rubbed over fur - and can this be eliminated successfully? (A) This again requires testings. As we find, though, this had best be eliminated if it is possible to gain the required activity without same.
9. (Q) Is cork and leather mixture sufficient - If so - advise -
1000-20 Page 3
(A) (Interrupting) Should be sufficient.
10. (Q) Advise how to mix to acquire uniform absorption and when is it most advisable to add leather shavings to avoid matting? (A) This requires that this be not heated to a GREAT extent but sufficient that the mixture may become more uniform for its use; that is, to a hundred and one or two, see? not a greater heat; and then this blown into same as the heat is put in.
11. (Q) When is it most advisable to add leather shavings to avoid matting? (A) This is the manner in which it is put together as with the heat, or wind and heat, see?
12. (Q) Is there any other form in which leather can be obtained that would be suitable and easier to handle and where can this be obtained? (A) There's no other form as we find that is as satisfactory.
13. (Q) Baking Soda added to Furfluf when complete gives it an even dark color. Is this the cause of slight stain removable with damp cloth and does it affect the formula? (A) It affects the formula somewhat, but if this is used then the manner of the application of Furfluf - of course - must be altered somewhat. This again will require experimentations with same.
14. (Q) Is there a vegetable coloring or otherwise that can be used successfully to make Furfluf uniform in color? If so, where can this be secured and when shall it be applied? (A) As we find if this is mixed with the heat in the manner as has been indicated, or winded heat, this will make it more uniform in color. But the uniformity of color is not so much desired as to RESULTS that will be obtained by the use of same!
15. (Q) How long can Chlorine stand to retain strength? (A) This depends upon the manner in which it is kept corked.
16. (Q) Is Eimer & Amend [drug firm] giving it to me correctly? (A) It's very well.
17. (Q) I am forced to work in an extremely cold room. Does this harm the product while mixing same? (A) If there's just kept in mind the consideration that has been indicated, it will be - because it should be heated or should be put TOGETHER in above body heat; which is about a hundred and one, see? Consequently, this would mean that it will necessitate there being heat of the nature where it may be BLOWN together, see?
18. (Q) Soybean combs are not available in Columbus, Ga.,
1000-20 Page 4
or anywhere else. What other combs can be used, whereas the present horn combs break and I must replace them continually? (A) Then we would make arrangements with those who manufacture the soybean products to make same INTO combs with the heavy teeth for the very activity which is needed in this direction, see? Or the horn combs may be made into the PROPER weight and strength so that they would resist everything.
19. (Q) Is it well I am substituting a mixture of turpineol and pine oil technical to save cost? If not, advise of change. (A) This necessitates the testing out. As we find this is very good, though, to substitute.
20. (Q) When is Furfluf at its best - when made fresh or left to season in jars? How long? (A) This again depends upon where such would be stored, and as to how tight it is sealed. As we find, as it is a product which depends upon the activity of the chemical reaction of the fur itself, when it is fresh or near fresh it is at its best. Consequently, it should be kept in almost SEALED jars, see?
21. (Q) Why does soil remain on surface of fur even when Furfluf is generously applied and combed through? (A) It does not, if there is carried those products that should make for the removing of same.
22. (Q) As now seems the time to make important contacts, are there any other suggestions where Furfluf can be made to improve its work and otherwise? (A) Follow along the perfecting of the product; its container, the whole of the manner of preservation, the manner of application. And as these are progressed, as we find there will come the greater opportunities for the making of the contacts for the distribution of same.
23. (Q) Can you suggest what type of machine is best to secure for mixing at present? (A) As indicated, that in which it may be put together by a heat blown mixer - or the product MIXED by the stirring in a temperature as has been indicated - not higher!
24. (Q) Demand is made by Macy's and others for endorsement from a laboratory for a guarantee that Furfluf is not injurious to furs, also written affidavit of what benefits are derived from its use. Is Professor Witte of Pease Laboratory at 39 West 38th Street capable and trustworthy? (A) Capable and trustworthy.
1000-20 Page 5
25. (Q) Which store is preferable for me to make first agreement - Macy's or Gimbel's - both have been contacted. (A) Macy's as we find is the better.
26. (Q) Canvassers report they sell two or three out of a dozen and they return the rest saying that people are afraid to take chances and others say it is too much work. Will this be a drawback to the sale of same or is it the fault of the people selling? (A) It is both. Naturally, a new product, and one that has to do with the involvement of furs that to most people represent a great deal of saving or great deal of precaution - But when this is once introduced as from Macy's or Gimbel's, then all this will be taken away.
27. (Q) Name specifically what the proper carrier should be to make a uniform product? (A) This is again, as has been continuously given, among those things that must be from tests!
28. (Q) Shall I send samples to Mr. Mitchell of St. Louis who controls "Fullerizing" method and will he be the right source to handle Furfluf? (A) This would be satisfactory, but first make ALL of the tests yourself, see; having same passed on by the chemist as has been indicated.
29. (Q) My Life Reading mentions food and dress merchants as a channel for my advancement. Shall I take (brother Jack's) advice - he is a restauranteur and meets coat people who seem interested? (A) Very well.
30. (Q) Is my son-in-law, [...] of Jamaica, the right channel to contact an advertising man or a larger concern on a royalty basis? (A) Be very well.
31. (Q) Which one is preferable to work with? (A) This again should be a choice within self.
32. (Q) Have discarded the name Jennings Products, Inc. Which is preferable - [1000], Inc., or Furfluf Products, Inc.? (A) Furfluf Products, Inc.
33. (Q) Would it be a help at this time to get a check [on 1000-14] on my appearance in the Astor period as Jessica Bernheim? (A) This is again the choice of the entity. If there are the needs for the activities - Remember, these are different - or there are variations in the activities from that particular period. But it would be most INTERESTING!
34. (Q) Home conditions are going from bad to worse and my present abode seems tottering. Shall I get my husband money for partnership with his brothers - is he justified or is it best at this time not to interfere?
1000-20 Page 6
(A) Get the money!
35. (Q) Is my daughter [1193] studying in the right direction at the New York University in accordance with her Life Reading or are there any changes advisable? (A) For the present continue in the manner in which it is being directed.
36. (Q) Again I beg for spiritual guidance in this present upheaval. Is it best, considering all concerned to leave my husband now, and if so, which course is best to pursue? (A) Just as has been indicated, if there is to be given those counsels and those helps, it would best not to at present. Keep - Look within self, knowing that the guidance and the directions must come from that closer walk with Him. Let Him guide and direct. Let Him show the way. These are right and just.
