R E A D I N G
Time of Reading 6:10 to 6:55 P. M. ..., N.Y. (Body and enquiring mind; answering questions as to his life and work.)
1. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, the associations and relations, and the activities of [1151]; these in many associations and ways we have had before.
2. In considering the information that has been indicated and given, some of these we find apparently are in order; others seem to indicate that there have not been the activities in those directions in which indications were given that there should be a certain character of developments.
3. Yet, as we find, in all of these where there are the reactions from those efforts and those activities, these are in formative ways and manners being carried along in the ways that will bring for this entity the better relationships, as the associations develop.
4. Ready for questions.
5. (Q) In previous information given to me - (A) As we find, there is not that attitude of resistance; rather has it been that more of apparent indifference. Yet these are not the same, nor will there be the effects or the results the same. As we find, there needs to be only - not so much insistence but a consistent effort in these directions to bring results and activity on the part of those thus associated in the activities of the body.
6. (Q) In previous information also - (A) As we find, all of these activities have been most favorable. There needs be, without openly declaring self in relationship to some of the boards with which the entity is associated, the keeping of [1848] informed, as it were, as to some of the movements; as seeking advice and counsel with him concerning same to carry this to not only a greater or better conclusion but making for a closer friendship that,
1151-15 Page 2
with the change of policies, change of administrations that are soon to come about, will bring positions much more favorable to the entity in many fields of activity.
7. (Q) I have been informed by certain - (A) This as we find has arisen from sources that have at times been rather antagonistic to the policies of the entity [1151] and not in keeping with the impressions or activities among those who are the heads or the leaders of the movement upon either side of the question. But as has been indicated, if there will be kept the close associations with the developments that are the natural outcome of the investigations, there will be found those channels, those associations and connections that will not only make the activities of the entity more valuable to those activities but it will be found that there may be offered, there may be brought to the entity, in the changes, the position where all of these influences may come under the direction of the entity [1151].
8. (Q) In my conference with [1848] yesterday - (A) As we find, if the approach is through the abilities of the entity [1151] with all of the interests that may be coordinated with the activities of the boards, as represented by [1848] and associates, this may be made a practical thing. Yet it must be done without interference by those of the labor board, as far as government associations are concerned. But if the approach is made as has been indicated by the proposal, the consideration of both the holder of bond as well as the activities of those who make those bonds worth their paper, see, these worked in this way and manner we find may become a practical thing - a voluntary movement on the part of each may make it a practical thing. Otherwise we will stir up those who would use same not only against each of the factions that arise within the activity of such but create factors and factions that would make it a detrimental thing to all concerned. Hence it must be approached with tact, to be sure; but such an activity will become positive proof to the entity as to the abilities, as to the confidence, as to the activities in the field to which the entity may be, if he chooses, selected.
9. (Q) Will that be in Government? (A) That will be in Government. But it would be from different policies and from a different administration.
10. (Q) Does it look probable that [18481 will be the next President of the U.S.? (A) It's very probable that [1848] will be the next President if he chooses to accept.
1151-15 Page 3
11. (Q) Shall I approach [...]? (A) These approaches to these, of course, must be a part of the activity, but as to first - we do not find it so. Rather it should be to those in whom there has been confidence put in these as directors of various parts of the activity, see? Rather to those that might be termed, in some parlance, as the workmen or the laborers or the laymen, see? and then it becomes a part of, not pressure but policy to keep their same positions as the approach comes for such.
12. (Q) Would you name the people to be approached? to meet [1848] next week? (A) It would be rather those who would be in those positions of these men as their close studies, or those working with, rather than individual names - we do not find them - but these should be a part of the activity.
13. (Q) Should I take an aggressive leadership? (A) Should take an aggressive leadership, and in the manner in which there is to be the policies, the consideration of all; and for the activities to be coordinated, cooperative in their influence in the changes as may be wrought by this activity. The assurance to not only the laborer, not only the capitalist, but all of those who might be said to be in between, and those who are dependent upon same for activities in both directions. This means not only where the bonds or stocks are as collateral but are as earning forces, as well as for the man whose daily activities - as well as the prospects for a continuation of activities - are dependent upon there being such an activity in a unison of influence or force.
14. (Q) Would it be advisable to contact railroad management about this proposal? (A) This is very well.
15. (Q) But not at this time? (A) Not at this time; it will be the eventual coming, see?
16. (Q) Is it advisable to approach [...]? (A) Not inadvisable but it will have to be done very tactfully; and it is, as we find, better if there is the ability to bring not pressure but rather policy upon them when the approach is made. Hence to reach those who are upon whom these are dependent - is the better policy to carry, you see, with these approaches.
17. (Q) Is there an apparent probability for my services - (A) As we find, the entity will be called into the laboring end, as well as for advice and counsel to those on the financial end. The laboring man will call, though, first.
18. (Q) Will I get recompense for this service?
1151-15 Page 4
(A) You should; this should be a part of the consideration; not as one with the attitude, "Well, if you don't give me this" - not that attitude, but the laborer is worthy of recompense.
19. (Q) When can this call be expected? (A) Before September, or during that month.
20. (Q) Can I count on a vacation with my family this summer? (A) If it's made in August.
21. (Q) For how long? (A) This will depend, of course, upon circumstances; how soon there are curtailments in certain directions; how much pressure is brought to bear on others; but we would say two weeks to three weeks.
22. (Q) Where would it be preferable - (A) As we find, in those areas or environs where there have been those facilities for recreation as necessary, or as a part of the whole situation. Of course, self alone is not to be considered, if it is to be with the family - for each of those must be considered also. As we find, Maine or Nova Scotia or Canada.
23. (Q) Or Michigan? (A) Or Michigan, if you get out of the state but still in Michigan - that is, the island.
24. (Q) Is it advisable for me to keep out of the railroad - (A) Very well to keep quiet; not necessarily out, but don't disregard their faith and confidence they have put in you because somebody with an axe to grind has sort of, "Now, if you don't keep quiet or don't keep out, we can do this or that." Not that sort of attitude, see, but rather just keep quiet.
25. (Q) Is it wise for me to see - (A) This of course means, then, a choice between that which has been and is innate and manifested policy of the abilities of the entity. Be called into service in those directions. As has been indicated, if these - on account of the lack of the necessary financial returns, in the present - if these are to be recompensed or to be left alone, then in those fields where there may be the organizing of the financial institutions for the handling or controlling of conditions in local places or communities or centers or the like, may be a field in which the entity may carry on - and using much of the same policies as carried into those activities in the field as has been indicated. The choice, of course, is to be made within self. As indicated, we find - if there are the activities close with the investigating board or the labor boards, there is the
1151-15 Page 5
probability of being Secretary of labor, if desired - or if, on account of the political associations or affiliations, it is agreeable to the entity, the fields of activity in those directions as indicated. Such things would be then where individual groups would be, for it must eventually come to this - for they will break up, as the policies and changes come about, and will revert then to the necessity of the local institutions financing or carrying on those activities in the local communities, the local centers, the local institutions will be organized which may become not only a part of the whole financial fabric of the state in which it may be organized - or the fabric of the nation's resources - and not from just government blanket.
26. (Q) Is there assurance that the railroad - (A) This again depends upon what is the choice of the entity respecting the policies, respecting the activities as related to the national question as a whole respecting labor and capital. For one day this is to become - and it isn't so far away - the whole national situation. And who - as is understood by those of both capital and labor in certain circles, and will be understood better as there is the closer association or affiliation with the head of the board - who is better than this entity for the directing or controlling of same through every channel?
27. (Q) What board do you refer to? (A) The labor board that is investigating all of these relationships.
28. (Q) Is it to my interest that - (A) This again becomes a question as to what are to be the future activities of the entity. As we find, while this taking over by the entity of these activities would not prevent - yet it would curtail a great deal of the physical activities or contacts. Yet would leave the entity in the position - by taking over of same - to still be counseled with by both factions. Then, the choice must come within self as to what are the future policies in all of these directions.
29. (Q) Can harmonious adjustment be made with Young and D. and [1151]? (A) As we find, harmonious adjustment can be reached. This will take a little time, but this can be reached by the middle or latter portion of September.
30. (Q) What is the way open with the Metropolitan - (A) As we find, when there is the consideration of the general financial situation, as related to properties not only in this particular section, there can be adjustments
1151-15 Page 6
easily made for the retaining - through the activities in which the entity may be able to make agreements with the holders, or the Metropolitan Life Insurance. These as we find are advisable, in the long run - will be advisable, for not only will there be - with changes that are coming about in the general nature as well as more of the specific in the sections of the country - property will increase rather than decrease in its value [Bronxville area].
31. (Q) Can I make an adjustment with the company to retain the property? (A) As we find, as just indicated, you can - not easily, but an adjustment can be made with the company.
32. (Q) Is it advisable and possible that this Bronxville property - (A) As we find, now these offer two very different problems. As we find, it may be rented if so desired for the period say from October until next spring or for the whole year; or there may be later in the year the advisability - that in the present year, not next - the advisability of selling same. That is, there will be a market for same. Whether this will be a satisfactory market, of course, will depend upon general circumstances over which there is little control by any in the immediate activities. Hence it would be a choice. If it is necessary to use this means of making the holdings, then, we would rent. If there are the need that there be a curtailment, this would be the manner in which same would be handled - and it is advisable to do so, to hold for the period when there might be a greater activity in the real estate in this particular section.
33. (Q) Should my family go to the Michigan - (A) This would be rather desirable, for all on the whole.
34. (Q) Will finances during the coming year - (A) This becomes again rather - the directions in which the activities are chosen. As we find, if there are the changes of policies in the activities or associations for future activities, this may be kept very well in line. If there is a change entirely for the immediate there would be necessitated, of course, some changes in the office force or office activities, but still this would offer a channel or means through which sufficient - yea, abundance of financial returns might be a part of the experience. Then we would say, for the coming year yes, there will be sufficient for the maintaining - not only of the activities, curtailments in many directions, and with sufficient for the
1151-15 Page 7
carrying on of much of that which is close to the heart.
35. (Q) Have you any directions or suggestions - (A) As just indicated, this is a matter of choice, and a matter of keeping policies that have been a part, and are a part, of the experience.
36. (Q) Am I consistently undertaking to follow my life service? (A) Would there be those conditions in the experience if there were not consistency throughout? This is not as a plume or as a trumpet, but - let thy light so shine, as ye have, that thy good is not evilspoken of - neither is there ever a question in thine own conscience as to the policy ye pursue. Thus ye will find His blessings will attend thee ever in the ways that ye go.
37. We are through for the present. Copy to Mr. [1151] " " A.R.E. file " from A.R.E. file to Mr. [1151] on 6/26/38, which he requested to prevent any chance of Reading leaking out. GD put her shorthand notes in the folder and only transcribed them 9/8/59. The questions were also removed, so she did not have the complete questions in her notes.
