Time of Reading 11:05 to 11:30 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.

1. GC: You will have before you the body and enquiring mind of [1151], who is in his office at ... St., New York City. You will answer the questions he has submitted, as I ask them, regarding his mental and material affairs.

2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [1151] with the mental and material associations. Many of these we have had here before. Some changes have come about, through the natural developments of conditions and relations. Others have come owing to changes that are being wrought in the developing of conditions.

3. Ready for questions.

4. (Q) Please give the entity constructive advice pertaining to his activity in connection with the Railroad Security Owners' Association, and whether he will continue as a Consultant with that body and for how long. (A) While there have been and are changes and developments in the activities as related to the ownership and the railroads and their problems, as to whether the entity remains in the capacity of a Consultant will depend upon the choice a great deal in the mind of the entity. The opportunities will be open for same, and with these changes that are coming about, owing to changes in some of the Board, it will be seen by those in the position and authority as respecting the ownerships that there is the need for the consulting or advice of one who has had the experience as the entity regarding the relationships of such. Hence as we find there IS the opportunity for the entity to be of a great service, not only for those of the security ownerships but for those who are in a great quandary as to the very conducting of - or the workmen in relationships to - the railroads.

5. (Q) As indicated in the entity's last reading, he was to be called into the Railroad Wage Controversy some time the latter part of August or September. He was, but it was too

1151-17 Page 2

late to produce an effective result. Please give some further light to the entity as to the way he can be most helpful in contributing towards a solution of this vexing problem. (A) As just indicated, there are those of new blood in this advisory board, respecting especially the railroad problems. Here and through these, as we find, are the channels through which the entity, [1151], may give the greater service. To be sure, many of these will be somewhat averse to the activities of [1151], yet here - as we find - will be needed the diplomatic handling of the situations, not only for the welfare of the employees but for the security owners as well - respecting these problems. How that these may come about, to be sure - these should be left in the position where the entity [1151] offers the advice or opens himself to give advice, if there are the needs for same or if it is seen fit that he be invited the more into this counsel, see? yet do not impose or make such overtures as to defeat the very purposes and the ideals that the entity is capable of instilling into the minds and experiences of this group.

6. (Q) Should the entity engage himself aggressively towards securing a settlement of the Railway Wage controversy during the activity of the President's Emergency Fact-Finding Board, which should start about October 1st, 1938? If this is deemed wise, in what direction and with what parties should the entity undertake aggressive steps? (A) As has been indicated, this should be the attitude or policy of the entity: Let it be known to every member of the board, see - that is, especially of the NEW ones. More aggressiveness may be expressed to those that have been in authority and are still in authority BY the very activities of the entity WITH same. But leave those of the new blood, those that have problems themselves, that they expect to CHANGE the whole, with the realization that there is the willingness - without the aggressiveness that "it MUST be this or that."

7. (Q) Have the Directors of the Railroad Security Owners' Association an increasing awareness and understanding of the importance of the entity's services and enlarging usefulness? (A) This is as has been indicated here before, and some of the very reasons why the attitude as just outlined is the policy as we find for the entity to follow. There has NOT been the full appreciation. There will be MORE appreciation as - in the beginning of this parley (it

1151-17 Page 3

may be called) - there will be greater demands made upon the owners than there has been heretofore. THEN there will be the greater realization of the need for this mediation and the greater appreciation of the work that has been done heretofore by the entity will be felt by the holders of the securities, see? And thus, as we find, it would work as a two-edged sword. There will be the appreciation of the need for the unions, or those in the authority as respecting same that are given the position as mediating the needs for the UNDERSTANDING of those that are in the position as holders of the securities, as well as the needs for the holders of the securities to understand the attitude of the workers.

8. (Q) Will the new body of conferees, appointed at Washington, D.C., on September 15th, 1938, under the auspices of the United States Chamber of Commerce, produce an effective result? (A) There will be as we find MORE of a hullabaloo raised without any very EFFECTIVE work being done, or anything very definite; unless there is the due consideration given by those who are better acquainted with both sides of the situation.

9. (Q) Is it important for the entity to attempt to counsel with this group? Please give light on this matter. (A) As we have indicated, OFFER self - see - AS a means or channel; and then leave it with them, especially.

10. (Q) As indicated in previous readings, it was considered wise to develop a friendship with [1848]. This is satisfactorily developing. What further course is there for the entity to take in crystallizing the entire confidence of [1848] for constructive purposes? (A) Just keep on in the same way and manner as has been begun by the entity. Work as one equal in the situations for service to the common purpose of all; NEVER as one with an axe to grind, nor as one willing to grind someone else's axe!

11. (Q) Is the entity's friendly feeling towards [1848] reciprocated by him? (A) We would give that it is - and appreciated.

12. (Q) In a previous reading, it was indicated that the entity's Bronxville home might be rented from October 1st. Does it still seem possible for the home to be rented this fall, and is it desirable to do so? (A) As we find, if circumstances and conditions are such, this is still desirable. While there may be a little bit delay, as we find it is practical, possible; and if to the

1151-17 Page 4

entity and family it is seemingly the better situation, it would be well.

13. (Q) Are there indications for the entity to secure additional remunerative retainers, and in what directions? (A) Where there are the needs for the activities in which both capital or the interests of capital as well as the interests of the working men are to be considered - if there is the presenting of self in these capacities, we will find there will be the call more and more for the services and activities of the entity in relationships to same. These as we find may extend to other fields than the railroads; wherever there are the union activities, so they are kept FROM the factionalisms as result in the industrialists - as the mine or the garment makers. But the newspaper, the typographical - all of these may mean, may give opportunities for greater service and more remunerative activities for the entity.

14. (Q) The entity is of the opinion that it would be unwise to cooperate in the oil venture presented to him by [1561]; but that he should preserve his cooperation with [1561] for the release of metals. Will you check the entity's judgement in this respect? (A) We would find this would be most near the correct solution. Or NOT advisable - under the conditions, the circumstances, the associations and connections - to join in the OIL; while MOST advisable in the metals.

15. (Q) What course should the entity further pursue to have his particular aptitudes for conciliatory services recognized and used, on the basis of the "Laborer is worthy of his hire"? (A) In those directions that have been indicated. In those fields of activity, as we have indicated, there is more that would be in keeping with the ideals and purposes than in some of the union activities that are so controlled by egotism and the ego of individuals. But where there is the democratic reaction of all factions and factors in the activities, in the associations, in such connections may the entity join - if there will only be made known the willingness to serve - and may it become the entity to join, and be called into, such a service.

16. (Q) Is it wise for the activity of the entity to follow along self-abnegating lines, so that delicate economic adjustments can be made effectually? Or, in his present activity, should he pursue a different course? Light on this would be very helpful, for the entity understands the glory for all his results belongs to the Father. (A) This is very well. However, there are times when it

1151-17 Page 5

becomes necessary that a little more definite stand be taken. But as a policy, the self-abnegation in the activities of such organizations or such associations as the capitalists AND the servant TO the capitalist in the connection would be the better.

17. (Q) Have you any other advice to give the entity at present? (A) Hold to that purpose, and to the direction from within. Remember - as in the experiences of life, as in those examples that are set before us in every manner and way - there are few words that may be said other than that the kingdom is within, and "I am my brother's keeper." These are immutable - these change not. As to associations one with another, these become expedient oft - owing to changes that arise and that which is the impelling influence in this or that group. But whenever there is the forgetting of "If ye will be my children, I will be thy God," there comes selfishness - which is the basis and the beginning of all error.
