Time of Reading 11:40 to 12:42 Noon - Eastern Standard Time. New York City.
1. GC: The entity known as [1151], present in this room, further enquires concerning his business and personal affairs. You will answer his questions fully, as to readjustments he is currently making, as to his activities in general, as they affect the safeguarding of his life objective of bringing greater recognition of the principle of "I am my brother's keeper."
2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [1151] present in this room; those conditions, those activities being encountered in associations with others for and against those policies that are being determined, outlined and set in motion in the relationships to others.
3. Ready for questions.
4. (Q) Is the entity in his editorial activities proceeding satisfactorily and rightly, with particular reference to the Savings Bank Journal? (A) Proceeding satisfactorily. To be sure, this is causing and will cause antagonisms, and sides will be definitely drawn for the time being. As there is given an understanding, and an understanding is aroused in the minds of those who represent Capital, there will be gradually more and more a swinging to the policies which are being outlined, and as will be determined as conditions progress.
5. (Q) Will cooperation increase or decrease between the entity and the governing Board of the National Association of Mutual Savings Banks? (A) For the moment it will apparently decrease. As there is the awakening, as there is the understanding of legislation, as there is the understanding of the activities as will be enabled to be conducted through those policies, there will be more and more "gathering with" the entity.
6. (Q) Should the entity reorganize the publishing company, so as to have its affairs operated by a Board of Trustees?
1151-21 Page 2
(A) Under the circumstances that are arising, or that will arise, or that are contemplated, this would be advisable.
7. (Q) Will certain leaders among Savings Banks, such as Fred F. Lawrence, Myron F. Converse, Stacy B. Lloyd and Henry R. Kinsey, change their apparently unfavorable attitude towards the Journal and other editorial activities of the entity? (A) These as we find will gradually change. Some of these will be inclined to be rabid in the beginnings; even to the extent of attempting to aid in fostering those separate activities attempting to follow along the lines of old activities.
8. (Q) What can the entity do to speed up the understanding of the governing board of the National Association of Mutual Savings Banks? (A) This work as we find is primarily educational in its principle, in its activity; and there can only be those of such natures as determining factors in the changing of the attitude by those who are coming into and who will be in authority working with the policies as being set forth. As to speeding same - make hast slowly. Remember that overenthusiasm is as bad as dilatory activity. Great movements, great forces, move slowly.
9. (Q) Will they support the cooperative attitude of the entity, at their meeting next Wednesday, February 1st in New York City? (A) This as we find will be fairly well divided without DEFINITE steps other then SOME aiding those who will attempt to carry on a similar (but very dissimilar) publication following the older policies.
10. (Q) Will the Governing Board of the National Association of Mutual Savings Banks support James Young's endeavor to start a new competitive publication? (A) There will be some support, and an attempt to carry on. If in the present activities there is not the forming of antagonism by controversy, this will soon disappear from the field.
11. (Q) How long will Young continue this competitive publication? (A) Until there are those changes AFTER or following the National election - AND policies then set forth.
12. (Q) Should the entity give up the name "Savings Bank Journal" or seek to sell the name, and at what price? (A) We would not give up, but as to selling and as to price, let that be rather the approach from those who would seek to gain such a name.
1151-21 Page 3
In the name that has been considered, there is some antagonism on that score. Rather, as WE find, than Labor's Capital, we would adopt the name - or similar - LABOR-CAPITAL. This will carry a purpose just as efficient and NOT produce, in the minds of some of the older members, the tenseness of antagonism as it does in committing themselves that all they hold is only in trust.
13. (Q) Is the entity proceeding rightly in his plan to exchange the Savings Bank Journal with publications of Labor, thereby securing points of contact for an understanding between capital and labor? (A) As we find, this is definitely the policy to pursue. While it, as any change that has ever come, comes to effect the UNSEEN status of those in power, by the very force of their being in the position of directing the force of a power, it will gradually be disseminated in such a manner as for all to gain a better concept of the principle, the policy that the entity is presenting. Hence we will find the entity doing that which has been in a manner seen from the very beginning of financial undertakings, as the policies from the very first of those who represented capital as a national institution; and then those policies which came with the associations of the government with private AND public institutions of capital - or the banks AND government and capital. While this work being done is a consideration of all of these, it is coming nearer and nearer to that NOT of an idealistic nature but of a policy in which the government as well as capital, and surety of the nation, must rest; IN this ideal of that cooperation between the producer and that as directs the finances of the people as a whole. And as it is taking its course from the sources where the greater number of the populace or the laity are considered, this then will eventually become the policy that must be established to safeguard the government. With those cultivated interests as have been indicated, cultivate also those who have formulated and who are formulating policies of the higher or the guiding forces in the national institutions of finance. Don't lose sight of the value of the position that the self occupies, in that every individual has a voice in the directing not ONLY of that influence in the finances but in
1151-21 Page 4
the manner of its USAGE in all emergencies as well as the regular routine under the most favorable circumstance.
14. (Q) Apparently the possibility of obtaining financial assistance from John D. Rockefeller has failed. (A) This will not fail if it is carried on through those greater connections with the Regional Representatives in the greater institutions. But there are other channels; there are those sources which have been considered. They, too, are not to be lost sight of; that each depositor in any of the saving institutions, as well as members of every working organization, may be a part to the supplying of capital for the furthering and for the carrying on of this; not merely as propaganda but the education of "I Am My Brother's Keeper" - in that all work together, each dependent upon the other in all phases. Because there has been the activity in which in the national issues there has been the ability for shifting from one portion of the land to another during those seasons of exchange of activities, owing to the very great FIELD of activity of finances from the various institutions, this has given those in power of making such changes a feeling of personal security; they having lost sight of whose capital this is - not their own but the savings depositors. All of these, though, will become great policies in the educating of the working man, and capital also, as these are carried forward. This is only then a phase, but from the same sources may be gained the needs for carrying on or conducting this program.
15. (Q) Should the entity approach William Barstow for financial support of his editorial approach to the problem of greater understanding between capital and labor, or should he look elsewhere? (A) Very well to give Barstow an opportunity for aid in that which is very close to the heart of this Barstow; but do not become discouraged if there is not the wholehearted cooperation in the beginning as is felt SHOULD be. This will grow - as others. The idea, the ideal of "others" is to many of those in the position of holding, or even directing capital, rather new.
16. (Q) It is apparent that the relations of the entity with the Railroad Security Owners Association are becoming
1151-21 Page 5
increasingly confusing and impossible. Is it satisfactory for the entity to resign, requesting an honorarium of $15,000 that he may continue his transportation legislative work, with a free hand? (A) This as we find would be very well, if there is the ability to gain this end without producing too great a question as to the personal motives. To elucidate just a bit upon this special phase or factor: As has been indicated - as changes are necessitated by policies that will be needed for the regulating and carrying on of the Railroad activities, see - these are in such a position that there needs to be, in ALL of this as a system, a more UNIFIED work, a more UNIFIED activity. This will not be able to be accomplished unless there is a greater cooperation in same of labor AND the directing of the policies of same! Or unless there is more of that capital which is directing the policies of the Railroads in the hands or the directing of those who labor in same. Some periods ago there were few that were not in the main held or owned by the working man, yet TODAY this condition has changed. Now: As we find, as has been indicated, this entity - [1151] - is in the better position to bring this need before not only the Railroads in their offices (or directors) but the financial directing of same AND the working man; and to accomplish it again. Hence with the changing, let this thought or fact be not lost sight of.
17. (Q) What action should he take in connection with the Friday meeting of the Board of the Railroad Security Owners Association? (A) This must, of course, depend upon the choice the entity has made or does make as respecting his affiliation, and in what capacities this is to be carried on. This is why that as just given must not be lost sight of. Not, as has been so oft given for the entity, that it is to give self the impression that no other influence or force could accomplish it, but rather that there are the needs for the abilities, the needs for the foresight of the entity in the capacity where this can be shown and given to those of both conditions, both sides of the question presented as it
1151-21 Page 6
were; that there may be the SAVING of the situations for all concerned.
18. (Q) Is it wise to seek the cooperation of the Bennett-Parkinson group in working out the transportation problem? (A) This as we find is very well, so long as it holds to the same ideals as the entity. To be sure, at times, as the entity has experienced, it becomes necessary to apparently give as it were some in the MANNER of presenting the ideal situation to GAIN the ear as well as the factors necessary in carrying forward the ideal principles.
19. (Q) Are the relations between the entity and [1848] continuing satisfactorily, and will [1848] [3/25/39 See 1848-1, Life Reading] increasingly depend on the entity for advice and counsel? (A) These as we find are progressing most satisfactorily. Here may be used an example of that which has just been indicted, as to how there is to be the give and take. For the approach to the ideal solution of problems may be attained or gained. Not that there is the acting in a manner or way of cross-sectioning the condition, or of playing both sides to the middle or the like. But as has been indicated, there are those in position, in power, that need to learn their A B C's about the actual situation which exists between capital and labor.
20. (Q) Is it wise for the entity to continue contact with Leslie Craven and Fred H. Oliver, or should the entity beware of them? (A) Keep sufficiently close to know their own undertakings; not an underhand manner, but do not depend too much upon THEIR word.
21. (Q) Are the entity's relations with Labor improving? (A) Very muchly so.
22. (Q) Is George M. Harrison's understanding of the entity clarifying? (A) Clarifying.
23. (Q) Is it important that the entity secure complete freedom of action, and how should he finance himself? (A) This, of course, depends upon many of those situations or conditions which we have just indicted that become policies and activities in the various associations. There needs not be the entire freedom of activity as to relationships, but of thought and expression ALWAYS! As to the manner and means of financing, many of these
1151-21 Page 7
present themselves through many channels - as has been indicated. And so long as there is borne those relationships between the two fields of activity, there should never be the DOUBT in the entity as to the ultimate outcome and the ability to finance same through the associations of the various groups.
24. (Q) Should he endeavor to keep himself employed by the R.R. Security Owners Association? (A) This depends upon circumstances. If it ties the hands so it cannot carry on, no. If it is to be so that there is the freedom of activity and of speech, very well.
25. (Q) Is there any other advice you can give the entity in this particular matter? (A) As we find, if all that is considered and studied as has been given here, situations will adjust themselves.
26. (Q) Would it be advisable and financially profitable this year for the entity to move his family to Washington and rent or sell his home in Bronxville? (A) This, to be sure, will depend upon the outcome of many of those connections and associations. But to be closer to the center, or the needs for keeping in touch with all the factors and the faculties of the activity of the greater financial program - this would be very well.
