Time of Reading 3:40 to 4:00 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. ..., Va.
1. GC: You will have before you the enquiring mind of [1225], present in this room, seeking information on the process of imitation marble, a piece of which I hold in my hand. He has been trying for nearly two years to bring this to perfection. Please answer the questions that will be asked, and please give any information that would be helpful.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [1225]; the attempts and the processes here.
3. As we find, the natural inclination for such processes in the manner undertaken is to cause the position necessary for this to adhere or to assume the finish desired.
4. This used with any texture, or any board or cardboard that was put under pressure with a combination of hyposulphite of soda and permanganate of potash, would supply that so that the Nitrates - as with the Gum Arabic and those processes in same, would be held in positions desired.
5. It will require that there be just sufficient in quantity of the permanganate applied in the solution of the hyposulphite to clear same. This in ANY board or cardboard, under pressure, causes - or forms that which will cause same to lie flat.
6. These are some of the processes, to be sure, that have been attempted; but putting same under pressure, and heat to dry, should make the correct carrier for this process as held here.
7. Ready for questions.
8. (Q) Is the nitrate of dope and fillet the best thing to put on the back of lacquer? If so, please give right proportions for mixing and amount to put on. (A) This may only be tested, and this according to the filament to which it is applied; and may only be done by testing. But as we find, as for a filament for same - processes with

those compounds indicated would be well; though this must be free of pyrogallic acid when used, see?
9. (Q) What is the best composition to stiffen the back without affecting the front? (A) As indicated, this is what has been given; that process by which paper, board or the like may be processed under pressure and heat that would cause such as used here to be applied upon the surface without causing the contraction, or the necessary curve for the process.
10. (Q) Will you please give me the formula? (A) As indicated, whatever quantity it takes to process; it it's to be a sheet an inch square or ten feet square, it is to be the same proportions as to cover same - and this is only by testing. The permanganates are purified or clarified by the addition of the hyposulphite; just the quantity needed to clarify same is the amount to be used to process the board, paper, cardboard or the like, for the application of such.
11. (Q) What is the proper way to apply the composition? (A) Flow.
12. (Q) Has the marbleizing been done right as far as I have gone? (A) This is in the mixture here - yes, this is very well. This may be made, of course, in many different forms or shapes, by the manner of mixing.
13. (Q) What is the correct color combination for sienna marble? Give proportions. (A) The burnt umber is that used for the basis for the sienna marble color; and this is mixed in proportions as to the shade desired.
14. (Q) What gauge lumarith should I use? (A) This depends upon the width that is to be used for the various forms upon same. And this may only be told by the testing.
15. (Q) How many coats of nitrate of dope should I put on lumarith? (A) This will require at least three.
16. (Q) Does the static electricity affect the surface any? (A) Affects more the base upon which the application is made, rather than the surface. For it separates - see, the electricity is that which causes the separation of the base upon which the application is made, see?
17. (Q) How many coats of lacquer should I put on back of marbleizing? (A) This depends upon what thickness or character of base is to be used. This again, as we find, will not be so necessary - other than just sufficient to make the proper reaction to the dope as applied, see?
1225-4 Page 3
18. (Q) How long should I wait between each coat for drying? (A) This, of course, depends upon the temperature under which the applications are made. All such should be made under rather high temperature, and would require some eight to twelve hours for the correct time to elapse between coats; and it should be applied in a temperature about 100 to 110 degrees.
19. (Q) Does marbleizing become a part of lacquer and nitrate of dope? (A) It does.
20. (Q) What is a good water-proofer that will dry quickly and hard and not crack? (A) This is not necessary for consideration with the processes for the conditions here given. But as a water process - these we would have to search for farther; we haven't it here.
21. (Q) How long should it take to produce the finished product? (A) In three to four days.
22. (Q) Can this be made a profitable business, and is it advisable for me to continue to work in same? (A) As we find, it would be well. For these can be used especially where there are the round edges in ANY furniture, or any activities where such are needed in any commercial activity. We would follow it through.
23. (Q) Any further information or help? (A) This as we find is that needed to start in the right direction. When making application of the processes for the basis for this application, this is to be applied to both sides, to be sure, see? so that it penetrates; whether it is paper, cardboard, wood; and whether it's an inch, half inch, quarter or what - and these applied on both sides, see? and then heat and pressure upon same; and they will remain, when this is applied, in a flat surface.
24. (Q) What pressure to the square inch? (A) About sixty pounds to the square inch.
25. (Q) In regard to my physical condition - would glasses help my eyes for reading? (A) Glasses would help the eyes for reading.
