1. GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions which have been submitted, as I ask them.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body here, [1885].
3. As we find, there are disturbing conditions which have prevented and do prevent the better normal physical functioning.
4. While in some respects there are changes from that which has disturbed the body, and apparently helpful conditions have been the result, in others there are changes in the conditions that have not been entirely satisfactory.
5. The disturbance, as we find, has primarily to do with the whole of the hepatic circulation; thus the liver AND the kidneys, and the kidneys have been accentuated in effect more than the liver - though in the present the liver apparently is the greater disorder.
6. As we find, these are then the disturbing conditions with this body, [1885]:
7. The natural reaction from the disturbances of this nature has been not only a general weakness, but at times a high temperature; and the system attempting to adjust itself to the activities through those areas has been greatly lessened in the abilities for purifying the blood, in making for the elimination of poisons from the system from the natural activity of the organs in relation to the assimilating of foods and the creating of those influences for the resuscitation and the building up of resistances.
8. Hence there is not only weakness but incapacitation for activities, and the effects are naturally to both the nervous systems.
9. As we find, there has been congestion to the extent of pus in the kidney. At present there is a deeper-seated disturbance in the liver's excretory functioning; and this
1885-1 Page 2
naturally has caused the acute symptoms and pains to shift in portions of the body.
10. These are not NECESSARILY operative conditions - if there will be brought the proper stimulation through the food values and those internal influences that may work with the attempts of the system to adjust itself to the disturbing forces, as combined with the stimulating of the activities of centers in the cerebrospinal system as related to the activity of the hepatics.
11. Such osteopathic stimulations should be kept as they have been, but combine more the stimulations of the secondary cardiac area; that there may be greater drainages in their relation to impulse of activity of the nerves through the liver, as well as the ducts and the glandular forces of the organs that are so closely associated with the excretory functioning of the liver.
12. Also these should be in the lower portion of the dorsal area, that - as combined with applications as we find necessary for the allaying of the temperature, the allaying of the inflammatory forces both in the liver and in the kidney area - there may be greater drainages. This, then, would necessitate some stimulation in the lower LUMBAR areas - these, of course, coordinated with the circulatory forces to the head and to the upper portion of the body. But the secondary cardiac, the 9th dorsal, the 4th lumbar in proper stimulations for drainages, for impulse of nerve activity from BOTH the cerebrospinal AND the sympathetic nerve system.
13. Such manipulations should be given morning and evening.
14. Also each evening - and EARLY morning - that is, in the evening before retiring, and at the early morning period when the body becomes restless by the sediments that tend to gather in the kidney and bladder, and the irritation that comes from same - we would apply the Green (if possible to obtain) Mullein Stupes. These should be applied over both the liver and gall duct area, and over the kidney area from the back. These should remain upon the body for at least twenty to thirty minutes to an hour, depending upon the ease that same brings, to be sure. In making the Stupes - let these be prepared with the GREEN Mullein if possible - this bruised and then the hot water poured on same (in a crock or enamel container). Have them at least two thicknesses over the body, with a gauze and then heavy padding afterward, - and even an electric pad over both areas would be beneficial.
15. Prepare and take internally a mild Watermelon Seed Tea, prepared in this manner, or these proportions: Take a
1885-1 Page 3
tablespoonful of watermelon seed (before they are crushed or cut). Then crush or cut same, and put in a pint of boiling water - or put them in a tea container (crock) and pour a pint of boiling water over same. Let steep for at least thirty minutes. Take this quantity during a day; taking a tablespoonful to two tablespoonsful two, three, four times a day; but this should be repeated at least two or three times each week, so that there may be the activity not only of the nitre that is an active principle in same - upon the whole of the circulatory system as related to the upper and lower hepatic circulation, but that there may be a purifying of the system in the activity of same with the combinations of that stimulation from the Mullein Stupes on the areas indicated.
16. Then, as to the rest of the diet:
17. The Jerusalem artichoke should be a portion of the diet each day. This would be taken preferably cooked, but it may be taken raw if preferable. The insulin from same - as it is easily assimilated for the activities not only of the pancreas and spleen and liver activity but - will aid in reducing the inclination for the inflammation and pus activity in the kidney itself. One artichoke the size of a duck egg or turkey egg, or thereabouts, should be taken each day - that is, the tuber of the Jerusalem artichoke, see?
18. No meats - if any are taken, only the broths of fowl; ESPECIALLY those portions of the neck, the feet, the back or the like, cooked for a LONG period and broths made from same. From THESE portions we find that calcium, in an assimilated form, would aid in strengthening the blood stream through the assimilation of this for further assisting in purifying the blood force and alleviating those inclinations for that to be carried through the system FROM the hepatics to be eliminated.
19. Eliminating foods, of course, are preferable - as in any of the vegetable forces, any of the vegetables that are an active force for not too great a stimulation for the lymph and emunctory activity through the alimentary canal, but that are stimulating to same for better activity - as the pieplant [rhubarb], or similar foods that aid in such activity.
20. Junket, even those principles as from gelatin and the like are to be desired - if they agree with the body or if the appetite will take portions of same.
21. Not too much, yet, of those foods that are too heavy in the contents as from cereals. But crushed wheat and oats, especially cut oats, are desirable - these, of course, in moderation.
1885-1 Page 4
22. Do ALL of these or NONE; and as we find (if these are done) we will bring much better forces for this body, [1885].
23. Ready for questions.
24. (Q) Is there any permanent damage done to the liver? (A) None that may not be materially aided towards normalcy, with those proper administrations. For, remember - the liver - yea, all the organs as related to same are much like the tongue - they soon heal by the very nature of their activity with the whole of the reserve energies of the bodily forces, through assimilation and activity. And yet they are the more easily susceptible to those influences of whatever nature that may be administered to the body.
25. (Q) Is the mental state a major factor of his disability? (A) This, of course, has been - the discouragements that have come, the lack of the responses - but as we find, if there will be the administration of the suggestions here, we may soon find real help towards PERMANENT recuperative forces in the body. To be sure, should there be - either from the liver or from the kidney - that which PERSISTENTLY causes such great temperatures, then other measures might become necessary. But if there is a consistent application of all suggestions made here, we should find relief.
26. We are through for the present. Copy to Wife " " Ass'n file (GD's notes at the time of the reading: See extra sheet [which was enclosed] of suggestions for Osteopath. If the Jerusalem artichoke may not be obtained there, you may order some from John A. Salter Seed Co., LaCrosse, Wisconsin. You may obtain watermelon seed from any seed store. Green Mullein Leaves may be gathered from the fields in many sections; it grows wild and may be gathered at this time of year. At your convenience we would appreciate a history of the case to the time of obtaining the Reading. This is valuable for our files, so we may have something with which to compare our information.) information.)
