1. GC: You will have before you all the affairs of the Atlantic University of Virginia Beach, Va., also the following individuals who are at present working on the plans of rehabilitation of said university; Messrs. Jefferson Seligman, David E. Kahn and Rudolph C. Ady, all in N.Y. City, Dr. F. H. Scattergood and Dr. Wm. Moseley Brown of Virginia Beach, Va. You will also have before you the conference held in N.Y. by and between Messrs. Jefferson Seligman and Edwin D. Blumenthal on Feb. 11, 1931, and the telephone conversation between Messrs. Kahn, Ady and Scattergood, on the night of Feb. 11, 1931; also the meeting which was scheduled to be held this morning, Friday, Feb. 13, 1931, at Blumenthal Bros. office at 10 o'clock. You will answer all questions which I will ask you regarding these conditions.
2. EC: Yes, we have the conditions and circumstances that surround the university, individuals, and conditions in general.
3. In considering all conditions, as we would find from here, there should be due consideration given as for the purposes, intents, for which the institution was first brought into being; how, in what way, what manner, this was to affect the lives of individuals who contacted same; and in and under the existent circumstances these purposes, these aims, these ideals, should not be lost sight of in dealing with individuals, or individuals' associations.
4. In view of the meeting that was held, the indications are as to the willingness of those who first fostered the ideal to withdraw from same, provided there are not such demands made that they are unable - in the present financial conditions - to meet those demands. With the ideals held, these will be made, then, according to circumstances and conditions as respecting same. This also indicated by the meeting that is held, or to be held in the present day between individuals that are interested in seeing an ideal carried on. It will be found that it will be necessary that

some, or those who are interested in the further habilitation of the undertaking, to meet with those that will be called into conference as respecting same, when same is called. Not only should there be, then, the president - or Dr. Wm. Moseley Brown, but there should be the representative also of the local board, or committee, to meet with same; for as much will depend upon the moral, or the financial AND moral support of those in the community as upon the individuals' activities. Ready for questions.
5. (Q) At the conference held in N.Y. City this morning, what should be the cash consideration to be asked of Blumenthal Bros. in settlement with them by the representatives of the university? (A) That in whole up to the time when there was a change in the amount of the budget.
6. (Q) Should Dr. Brown go to N.Y. to meet with Messrs. Kahn and Seligman this week? (A) When the meeting is called he should be there, with a representative of the local committee - or of the local people.
7. (Q) Who would be the best representative of the local people? (A) Scattergood or Baldwin, or both.
8. (Q) What steps should Mr. Seligman take with regard to obtaining the resignations of the Blumenthal Bros. from the board of trustees of Atlantic University? (A) Those have been taken.
9. (Q) Should demand be made upon Blumenthal Bros. to pay all obligations of the Atlantic University in full to August 31, 1931, including the 50% settlements already made and those being made with faculty and creditors and which constitute moral obligations? (A) As has been given.
10. (Q) What part should David E. Kahn take in the affairs of the Atlantic University? (A) That desired to carry an ideal.
11. (Q) What should be Mr. Ady's next step? (A) Carrying on with the preparations for the meeting that would be held in New York.
12. (Q) What should Dr. Scattergood do at the present time in his work for the university? (A) Keep on working on those leads that are being followed out in the various directions. When there are changes, and if there is enough separation in ideas as held by some - ideals as held by others - and of the individual that has been associated with same - they may be made to become effective.
13. (Q) What contacts, looking toward the rehabilitation of
2087-5 Page 3
the university, should be made? (A) All of those that are interested in any undertaking of the nature and character. There are many Foundations that are in a position to offer to such an institution, or such an undertaking - with the proper set ideals and ideas - to supply much of that needed in the way of capital for the carrying on, when once set. This, as we find, will be carried out in the idea, if the IDEAL is held to! Lose the IDEAL, and we have lost all - as it would be to move away from the place itself!
14. (Q) What individuals should be approached for assistance immediately? (A) Any of those who - There are local individuals who have promised - these will hold! There are individuals away, those that are being approached in the present, will be for immediate aid.
15. (Q) Should the du Ponts of Wilmington, Del., be approached and what success would be obtained? (A) Depend entirely upon the approach. There are certain PORTIONS of the family - a better approach would be those through the Dodge - Cleveland.
16. (Q) Who would be the best one to approach these? (A) Brown or Scattergood, or any of those.
17. (Q) Who would be the logical individual or groups for David E. Kahn to approach for the purpose of obtaining financial assistance for Atlantic University? (A) There are many through the acquaintanceships of the body that would be interested, and would carry on. DO NOT press too much those of the secular nature, as considered by some, that would separate, or make for an individual attainment.
18. (Q) What steps should be taken to interest the Rockefeller Foundation in the Atlantic University? (A) There will have to be something established first, then there may be much obtained. For any individual IDEA this may be obtained almost immediately, but it would necessitate there being something carried further than at present. Such an one as Seligman or Kahn (that is, Otto Kahn), and those, may be the ones to ESTABLISH the institution. Then there may be expected from many various groups. Such an one as Graves, who is already establishing self here. Such an one as those of the Dodge or du Pont, or of Rockefeller, or of Page, or of Crane [See 2087-5, Par. R2], or of such - those influences that are already establishing. In those of the Rockefeller, it would be better to interest those of the other branch of the family than those so closely associated with work in this vicinity; while these would be interested
2087-5 Page 4
in individual projects, as concerning portions of the work, but it would have to be established first.
19. (Q) What action would be immediately necessary upon the resignation of the Blumenthal Bros. from the Board of Trustees? (A) The meeting of those of the Board that would be left, and the establishing with the State Corporation Board the changes that would be made.
20. (Q) What part should Dr. Scattergood take in the reorganization? (A) Fit in at each and every place, but do not push self so far forward as to overbalance in any direction. Be a pusher and booster. Make the others do the work as well as self.
21. (Q) What would be the most feasible plan of reorganization of the Atlantic University? (A) In the same manner in which the Board was first formed, and the purposes for which this has been established. Then increase the Board to meet the needs of those conditions that arise from period to period, in its further development. As there has also been plans laid for certain grounds, certain buildings - these may be carried forward, will these be carried out in a separate manner from that already founded.
22. (Q) What further assistance can be rendered by Mr. Seligman toward the rehabilitating of Atlantic University? (A) The interesting of those who may be interested, and who will be interested in the undertakings - from the interest already held in individuals, and that which has been presented and will be presented in the various individuals, or through various individuals from the vicinity, and the needs of the condition.
23. (Q) Is this the proper time to approach Mr. Lester Hofheimer of N.Y.? (A) Not as yet, until there is some definite work to be established in the same thing - for the establishing of laboratory, or establishing of some individual portion of the work, this Foundation may be approached, but it will be as a Foundation for a special portion of the work. When you have the representations sufficiently to establish one building, then approach the various foundations for the establishing of individual buildings, or works to be carried on in the various portions - see?
24. (Q) What other men in N.Y. would be interested in financing the Atlantic University? (A) Get those two first, and then you will find many of lesser degree that will add to the various things.
25. (Q) Are the ideals now in the minds of Dr. Brown and his associates the proper ideals to warrant the success of such an educational institution?
2087-5 Page 5
(A) If these are in line with those that have been outlined for Dr. Brown, as to the manner and way in which these were to be approached, then they are in line with the success - and the Forces will guide, and keep, and save those conditions in and for those efforts given.
