1. GC: You will have before you the body and the enquiring mind of [2254] present in this room, and all his business associations and relations. You will answer all the questions which he will ask you regarding these, and other phases of his life, including health and home relations.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [2254] present in this room. In the varied conditions and circumstances that surround the body, there have existed periods when too suddenly has the body made decisions that have not proven as satisfactory as had been contemplated by the body, and this has had to do - in different ways and manners - with the material relations, as well as with self and home. Ready for questions.
3. (Q) What could we do to improve our business at our main store? also Furniture Exchange Store? (A) There has been a policy that of late, or in the last few months (few meaning eight, nine and ten months) a greater change has come about. Were those of former policies and principles adhered to, these would be the more helpful changes - as we may find - without going into greater detail. This, to be sure is rather general - for the policies have been of rather the gradual than the decided. While these have not proven to be wholly unsatisfactory, the difference in the changes in circumstances of the individuals - or the public with whom the body and associates has to deal - must be taken into consideration. While not such a consideration as drastic measures might sometimes call for, yet nearer the former policies - as WE find - would be the greater change to make.
4. (Q) What is the best newspaper for us to feature? (A) This depends upon the character of the public, or place of public that is desired to be reached. In the local or surrounding territory, the evening papers present the better channel for the outlet - as do the Sundays, in a given period of time.
5. (Q) Are we paying too much money for service to our employees?
2254-1 Page 2
(A) In each different field there should be, as has been formerly, a closer tab on the departmental portions of same. This will curtail to some extent, and will make more productive each department or each outlet for advancement of distributions, whether in a general or in the exchange - see?
6. (Q) Do you think it is best to continue business in ...? (A) Best to continue in ...
7. (Q) If my business was moved to ... would it be more successful? (A) There are many conditions to be considered. While there may apparently be a greater outlet in Norfolk area as the distribution, yet the overhead or the carrying charges would be an excess that would NOT - as we find - make for the difference in location. Hence, as given, carry on in ...
8. (Q) Will my business improve over last year? (A) In the early portion of the coming fall will make a considerable change, when there is the refurnishing throughout the various fields of distribution, that - as we find - will make for a DECIDED increase over last year.
9. (Q) Will my business make money during 1931? (A) With the increase, answer for yourself!
10. (Q) Are we spending too much money for advertising? (A) Properly distributed, properly handled (which is a business in itself), little - or not too much CAN be spent, if judiciously handled - but when it is just to fill space, or just to keep before public, this is a good way to spend too much money! but, as various leaders, as various conditions present themselves, various needs as will be met, NOT too much money being spent - if judiciously looked after. Well to check up on the various MODES of advertising. The radio field is an excellent field, and one that may checked on directly. Seemingly, an expensive field - yet that which keeps a business more often before the public will ALWAYS be the better mode or the better channel for advertising.
11. (Q) Should we continue to sell radios? (A) Continue to sell radios. While the field is being well covered, and while the necessity of partial payment means a curtailment in the amount of profits taken, yet this in itself - PROPERLY handled - may make for outlets in other directions. We would continue to handle radios.
12. (Q) Do you recommend our putting in an electrical refrigerator? If so, what make? (A) The field of the electric refrigerator is only in its beginning, for - as the power is cheapened - more and more will not only the city and suburban places offer an outlet
2254-1 Page 3
for these but the field will be broadened more and more. As to the one, individual one, there are some improvements being made on one little known as yet - which would be well to consider in the next season. In the PRESENT, none offers better than either that of the General Motors or the General Electric. Either are excellent. Each has its particular advantage, in the low costivity of operation - another in low costivity of upkeep WITH the affiliation with powers or utilities; yet EITHER are good - but later consider the new conditions.
13. (Q) Do we have too many employees? (A) Not too many, as we would find, will more of them be kept busy in direct departments. Not too much red tape, to be sure, but nearer to the classification and organization - as HAS existed - rather than overlapping so much - would make for better distribution and better returns on those already in command of the various departments.
14. (Q) Would it be better to discontinue certain lines? (A) There are some to discontinue, where improvements are seen in other lines. Because they have been of some special conditions that has warranted holding on, well; but when their usefulness - and the advantages as may be had from other lines are more to be GAINED - then change!
15. (Q) Are all of my employees honest with me? (A) This rather a large question, under conditions that have existed from time to time, yet we will find - while there should not be too much of a FAMILIARITY among those in charge and those employed, but as one sows, so does one reap. Will the body expect honesty shown them, show SELF to be at least in sympathy WITH the problems OF those the body depends upon. That does not necessarily breed or beget familiarity, but it commands respect - and where respect is commanded, honesty is the child thereof.
16. (Q) What could we do to make our wholesale warehouse pay? (A) This has presented a problem in many different ways. As WE would find, there would of necessity be some changes in the personnel of the handling of same, to make same pay - and in the manner or in the way of the distribution through same. Affiliations with some of the distributing houses would also make for a channel where this may be able to be of greater returns; that is, where there is the usage of certain stocked - or problem stocked propositions, these need NOT be of so much overhead IN the handling. This, as we find, needs the attention of one as may be called a specialist in the keeping up and moving out of those that have been costly heretofore.
17. (Q) What could I do to improve my personal finance?
2254-1 Page 4
(A) This asked in the manner as presented might be answered in an easy way, yet would offer even greater problems with the income increasing or mounting unless the body-mind and the body-consciousness was so attuned as to be able to MEET the conditions as would arise. There are those who are ABLE to know HOW to handle prosperity. There are those (and a much greater class) that are able to meet those conditions when they are combative at all stages of the game, and a little increase here or a setback there makes more determination. In this individual body, here, we would find that, the game is that more sought than what MONEY or prosperity would offer in its broader sense - but learn to use WELL that HAD in hand, then MORE may be GIVEN thee. Remember the talents!
18. (Q) Advise what is best to do with my farm? (A) For several seasons this has been a losing proposition, yes. In and under the circumstances, would be well that for the PRESENT - at least - stand those losses, or those inabilities to make payments, or pay same - but a little later changes may be made that may be satisfactory, either in disposing of or in the character of CONTRACTS as may be made for the handling of and distribution of the products of same. Hold, then, for the present. Another season, or by the next spring season, different changes or stands may be made as respecting same.
19. (Q) What can I do to make my family more satisfied? (A) This, again, SHOULD have been begun long ago. The question to meet the needs at the PRESENT time, under PRESENT situations, PRESENT conditions, would the BEST come - drawing nearer to them in their likes and dislikes, rather than their wants or requirements (as has been in some directions), but be in a better position to reason with - not argue; to care in a manner that their INTERESTS and THINE interests may be nearer in accord, and more contentment, more satisfaction, may be gained in this manner.
20. (Q) Advise what is best to do with lot in Glenshelleah? Also in Hopewell? (A) Under existent conditions it seems, or is apparently suicidal to expect great returns in the near future from either; yet we will find that changes MUST come FOR the better in the next eighteen months to two years - so we wouldn't change them under that time, at least.
21. (Q) Will my father's health improve soon? (A) We haven't the father!
22. (Q) What can I do to improve it? (A) Much care has been given and much thought by the body
2254-1 Page 5
as respecting these conditions. Not much change would we give as for SELF'S own consideration in the matter, from that as has been shown - yet this is not wholly satisfactory. There have been so many misunderstandings, misconstrued matters as pertaining to same - yet we would still give that same attention, in that as is due; for remember this - the first commandment with a promise!
