Time of Reading ... Two Flights Up, Unknown. New York City, N.Y.

1. LBC: You are now asleep and will be able to tell us what we want to know. You have before you, Mrs. [3866] ... St., two flights up, New York City.

2. EC: Mrs. [3866] ... St., New York City.

3. LBC: You will see her, she is before you now.

4. EC: Yes we have her here.

5. LBC: Now I want you to go over her carefully, examine her thoroughly and tell us what is the matter with her, if anything?

6. EC: Yes, there is the plenty the matter with her.

7. (Q) Well tell us what it is? (A) The skin, you see, is tight over the bone, almost. She is thin, sunken eyed, hollow cheeks, frame is thin. Lack of blood in the body; feverish, coming, you see, from the stomach and from the lungs. First, begin here; commence back here, this condition that exists here, at present, if from a very long standing and what we have had before. We had first here a strain across the back from lifting; this is at the second lumbar. We have formed then, you see, knots along here, just at the pit of the stomach from indigestion and leaning over. These knots that have formed here is between the skin; kinder on the cortex of the outside of the body (not from the surface but inside surface). These have formed from clots of blood. Strain has produced this thickening of the walls here inside; do not show from the outside. This, in turn you see, after the body has rested or relaxed has thrown out from this, then to these plexus here, governing, coming up to the lungs until we throw off, almost, continually a discharge of matter and blood, coming from this through the lungs and the mouth and the nostrils, at times. We have the same thing from the catarrhal condition that has come into the head. At first the body is weak all over.

We cannot do this body very much good. Rest this body some but we cannot get much out of it. We can stop this flow of blood, these hemorrhages, from the stomach and lungs. Go over these knots along here. At times we throw it off but it comes back again through the intestinal tract and it is taken up and secreted and thrown through the walls, almost. At times it causes a thinning of the walls of the intestines themselves, in throwing this back into it, you see.

8. (Q) What would you suggest to relieve this condition and build up the body? (A) We haven't anything to build on. We can stop this blood from flowing, which will help to remove these troubles. We would have to have an operation to stop the excess of throwing out this discharge; the loss is, more or less, constant. It constantly drips out and is coughed up and spit out. When she has a coughing spell it is thrown out. We have leaves, a grass, a planting [Plantain?] on the ground - these leaves made into a tea, here, will stop this discharge; stop the flow of blood. We need more air, fresh air, here to the whole body and something that the stomach can digest will make the body rest easy. If it could get out from this close confinement here and get fresh air. We, also, want oil in the stomach or healing oil and wine for the stomach to make the body rest. Get easier and stop these hemorrhages right now. This will not do the body much good, but will make it feel better, but it will only make it choke up and make it larger here at the stomach, around in the front of it, at the second lumbar. To get them out they will have to be out and the body cannot stand it. The waste of the blood will never coagulate again for there is not enough of the white tissue in it to do it. [Note: The following is another version of the same [above] reading text, taken by an unidentified stenographer.]

1. LBC: You have before you Mrs. [3866] ... St., New York City, N.Y. Now I want you to go over her carefully, examine her thoroughly and tell us what is the matter with her, if anything?

2. EC: Mrs. [3866] yes, we have her here. There is plenty the matter with her. In the first place the skin, you see, is tight over the bone, she is thin, sunken eyed, hollow checks, her frame is thin. We have a lack of blood in the body, also, feverish from the stomach and lungs.

3. This condition dates back here and existed for a

considerable time. At present, this condition has been very long standing and resulted from what we have had before. We had, at first, a strain across the back. The back has been strained, from lifting, at the second lumbar vertebrae. As a result of which, this corded condition along here due to over-stimulation of the muscles and nerves; at the pit of the stomach an irritation of the nerves and a pressed condition from leaning over.

4. These knots formed here in the cortex, or outside of these organs (not the outside surface but the inside surface). There have been clots of blood here, due to this overstrained condition which has increased and thickened the walls of the stomach. These do not show from the outside, but is fully perceptible from the inside. These, in turn, have brought about this relaxed condition and lack of nerve force to this nerve plexus, governing the stomach and lungs.

5. We have almost, continually, a discharge of matter and blood. This is perceptible in the lungs, mouth and nostrils, at times. We have this same thing from the catarrhal condition that comes into the head. This body is weak all over. There is very little that can be done for this body. Rest it a little but we can get very little reaction out of it.

6. We can stop this flow of blood; these hemorrhages. Go over these knots along here; at times, it will cease, then come back again and through the intestinal tract it will be taken up and excreted. There is a thinning of the walls of the intestines, due to this general weakness of the entire system.

7. In building forces into this body, will be no easy task, as we have nothing to build on. We can stop these hemorrhages, which will help to remove this trouble. An operation would be necessary to stop the excess or throwing off of this discharge, as this is more or less, constant all the time. It is constantly coming out; is coughed up and spit out. When we have a coughing spell it is thrown out.

8. To relieve this discharge, a stringent tea will stop it. A tea or fluid extract of Plantain (Plantago); dose as needed. We need more fresh air and more air to this whole body. Also, something that the stomach can digest; make the body rest easy. If it could get out from this close confinement here and get more fresh air, more lubrication into the system we would get results. We need oil into this body - Cod Liver Oil - this will have a healing effect, also, wine in small quantities, for a stimulating on the stomach; also, will have a sedative action and quiet the nerves.

9. After she gets easy and the flow has stopped, the rebuilding forces, the rebuilding process will go on. She can be made to feel a great deal better than she does now. Great care will have to be exercised, less the elimination will be choked up and make this trouble larger than it is now, at the stomach, around the front of the stomach.

10. At the second lumbar vertebrae we, also, find some trouble, which should be corrected. This patient needs an operation, by skilled surgeon, but she is not able to stand it now; her reactive powers are too low or too weak, as the white corpuscles or white matter in the blood is deficient and coagulation would be tardy, consequently, an operation would be very hazardous.
