Time of Reading 10:45 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. ..., Ill.
1. GC: You will have before you the body and enquiring mind of [5489], who is at ..., Ill. You will answer the questions which he has submitted concerning his mental and material affairs.
2. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [5489].
3. In many respects the mental and physical abilities of the body are well. There are, and have been, those circumstances in the experience of the entity in the present that have at times been very digressing, and hence have caused at times unfavorable comment from others. This has tended to lead often to discouragements on the part of the entity, and a tendency to at times condemn self for the little things that the body has allowed to interfere with purposes and aims. Not that the body-mental or physical should express self in such a manner as to be one that would act as lauding self, or seeking applause or praise even from associates, or to think of self more highly than he ought to think, yet do not condemn self; rather set a moral, mental and spiritual standard or ideal and work toward that at all times. Will the entity look back upon the experiences, these will often be found to have been faults or causes of failures, in thinking that self could do or act in the capacity that is felt or seen that another one held in esteem does and get away with it! yet this has often brought those very conditions from which there arose misunderstandings. The standard or ideal, then, has not been set high enough. Remember, when standards or ideals are measured by human activities, these are only of finite minds, and are not viewed except through the eyes of the beholder; and since these are only of mental or of moral issues as well, these must be set as high as the heavens themselves - then work! making self a channel; for he that would be the greatest among men must be the servant of all!
4. Ready for questions.
5. (Q) Please advise me as to my character, dependability
5489-1 Page 2
and responsibility. (A) These would be better understood through the experiences the entity has passed in its sojourn in these material surroundings, yet with that which is being developed, if there will be set rather a higher standard, a greater ability will be developed, more dependability, hence may take more responsibility, and as to the affability - these are builded by that used day by day. Not the great things that count, but the little courtesies, the little thought that is taken of each circumstance builds that which makes for character. Not by dreaming alone, nor by taking thought alone, is character builded - but the thought must be taken, and the thinking must go on - but activity, and the use of that which is known, builds for high mental ideals, high moral ideals - and, being true to self, will not be false to any man!
6. (Q) Please advise if my forming connections with the Puffer-Hubbard Co. of Minneapolis, Minn., and David E. Kahn, Inc., of N.Y., is the successful and proper move for me to make at once? If not, what is advised? (A) There are many things to be considered in making such an association or connection. The first would be: Is the body mentally, morally, spiritually, himself sold on the abilities, the possibilities and the affabilities of the association? Then with this first set, the second would be: Are the associations and the policies of such an association as the IDEAL of that to which the body would build self? Then, if these are determined in self, WORK!
7. (Q) What is the best field for me in the water cooler business, New York, Chicago, or what cities? (A) As is seen by the natural conditions in the country, and the seasons, and the turning to such commodities by a public, these - either of these - would be an excellent field for the body, but - as we find - the middle or central west would be a better field than either Chicago or New York. As in St. Louis, Peoria, Indianapolis, Evansville, and the like. These are awakening to those conditions that are gained by the use of such commodities, and would offer a better field for activities in the present.
8. (Q) What will be necessary for me to do and plan, to be successful? (A) This has been VERY well outlined. If that cannot be gained from that, then he's hopeless!
9. (Q) What can I do to get the confidence of the people with whom I desire to associate? (A) HAVE confidence himself, else he cannot create confidence in another! As has been given, remember the first requisite for an association! If there is any doubt,
5489-1 Page 3
either in self or in those whom the body would associate with, then it's already half lost!
10. (Q) Is my character strong enough to hold this confidence? (A) Get it first, and then if he feels it's not strong enough - make it strong enough! There is an ever promise to those that would succeed in associations, and remember - even the ox is worthy of his hire, but he has to be a good ox!
11. (Q) Of what must I be careful in order to be successful and enjoy high standing with my associates and trade? (A) Don't try to act too much like the Smiths and the Joneses! Act like [5489] should, in his association with his fellow man!
12. (Q) Why haven't I been successful before in my endeavors? (A) Tried to do too much like the Joneses and Smiths!
13. (Q) What must I do to have the full respect and confidence of David E. Kahn of N.Y.? (A) Show self to be worthy of same!
14. (Q) How can we work the finance plan suggested by Kahn - to have it accepted by First National Bank Finance Co. of Minneapolis? (A) Through those same ones as has been planned, as these would be as acceptances to those through whom and by whom these will be handled, and if these are carried on the basis that those that are giving the orders are worthy of their credit, or their financing being carried out, then they will BE carried out!
15. (Q) How many water coolers can I sell in 1932 if I work hard? (A) That depends upon how much you call working hard! There are the fields for same; at least would it be sufficient to show the abilities. At least fifty to seventy-five thousand dollars worth should be sold.
16. (Q) What new idea or plan is recommended to me to make an unusual success? (A) To make an unusual success one must BE a success. Nothing succeeds like success. Have faith in yourself, have faith in God and your fellow man. These are necessary for unusual success. First faith in God, second faith in self, third faith in thine fellow man, but don't put the cart before the horse!
17. (Q) To what is my ability best adapted in this business? (A) Selling.
18. (Q) How far can I depend upon the advice and promises of D. E. Kahn? (A) As far as David E. Kahn can depend on you!
19. (Q) Should we charge an additional $3.00 per year for service for a period of 3 to 5 years, in addition to the purchase price which gives one year free service -
5489-1 Page 4
(A) Should be included in the purchase price and not added! If it's to be added, add it first and let it be AS a service at such and such a price, and service charge for one, two or three years.
20. (Q) That would be better than making a full flat price and closing the deal? (A) Be better. Service is always the keynote in any new endeavor in which these are being distributed. First have the product in shape, so it isn't necessary - and then when it becomes necessary - for remember there are accidents, even in creation!
21. (Q) What nationally known companies should I first select to make quick sales? (A) Those in whatever portion of the territory is selected, that are known to be the leading channels through which such merchandise may be distributed to the public.
22. (Q) In what other branches of industry would I be successful? (A) Choose that which is best fitted for self, or that self feels like is more in line, and don't spread over too much territory. Remember, you are a one man man! You can't carry too many at once - you've tried this too often!
23. (Q) What will be the best and popular price to big outlets? (A) That in keeping with the service it gives to those whom it serves. These are graded according to the quality, the character, kind, and the cost per unit of running same.
24. (Q) Which cooler most successful, pressure or bottle type? (A) The bottle type ALWAYS the most effective, for at least eight-tenths of the people, or public, likes to SEE what they are getting!
25. (Q) What would be best trade name to call cooler? (A) May be called Kahn Kooler, or Kohler (?) Kooler, or some name that is in keeping with the character of the product itself.
26. (Q) Which is better, Kahn Cooler or Kahn Drinx? (A) Kahn Kooler.
27. (Q) What merchandise unit do you advise as most satisfactory to use in Puffer-Hubbard Box? (A) As we find, one that has already been tested and that doesn't use such high compression. That which is used by Zerozone or any of equal standard. Any that is best by test is the best to use.
28. (Q) Please advise if the complete box and unit in the office of Ralph Phillips, of the Puffer-Hubbard Co., Minneapolis, Minn., can be improved upon. (A) There's never been one made that can't be improved upon! That is very good, and be well to commence with.
29. (Q) Will I be successful in procuring Western Union business?
5489-1 Page 5
(A) Go through the distributing plant through which this may be handled, and would be very well. These will make special conditions and circumstances that would surround same. This would be well, and can be gained.
30. (Q) Should I visit Wadham's Oil Co. of Milwaukee, Wis.? (A) Any of the oil companies would be well. Wadham - we have had this one before - Yes, would be well - very good lead.
31. (Q) How best approach the Dutch Shell, and where? (A) The policies of the Dutch Shell are a little bit different in the handling of such things in various portions of the country. These, as we find, are more of territorial, and in whatever portion of territory that is chosen then approach these through the territorial country - see? Were this made the bottle type such that it carried with same a distributor of drinks AND of plain water, then these would offer a REAL outlet through oil or service stations - for these would carry with it that which would be plain, or that which would be paid for by the inserting of the coins themselves, see? and these are necessary in all service stations, that the overhead be as little as possible. A DISTRIBUTING unit of such a nature would be an excellent idea for the sales in ANY portion of the territory, for it would be self-selling - see?
32. (Q) What is your view of the possibility of the acceptance by the insurance companies of the 3 year purchase plan? (A) This is still doubtful, but there may be some concessions made both ways and be accepted.
33. (Q) What will be necessary for induce the finance company to accept these contracts? (A) Make them with those that are gilt-edge, and they will be accepted!
34. (Q) With what firm is it best to trade, or buy from - Universal Mechanical Unit Co. of Detroit, or Zerozone, Inc., of Chicago? (A) Zerozone has the best unit.
35. (Q) What will be my future with David E. Kahn, Inc.? (A) That depends on how much work, and how much confidence is built up, and how much faith, and how good a body he makes himself to be!
